There comes a time in everyone's life when they need to decide, "What's the next step in my life?" And at one point, everyone crosses that point in time where they get their parent's boot to the ass to get the hell outta their house. For me, I did get the hell out of the house, but didnt have to cash to go to college... so what did I do? <dun dun dun> Joined the military.

I didn't want to join the Army because... well... just because it's the Army. I didn't want to join the Marines because those are some scary mofos and I didn't want to turn into a She-Man. Then there was the Navy. I actually considered joining the Navy, but, the thought of being stuck on a damn ship for 6 months straight sounded like hell! Then that left the Chair Force... er... Air Force. Woop.

Then it came time for me to pick my job. I decided to go with a computer related job, because it seemed like that's where the money was. I have been in for over 2 years now, and am still in my Comm job, and I am raping the AF of all the benefits it can offer. With 100% tuition paid, that is the main thing I am raping the AF of. So... I am taking regular college night classes, but I'm starting to think of what I will do when I get out of the military.

I have less than 2 yrs left until I get out. There are people getting out of my job that are 20-22 years old, and making $72,000 a year MINIMUM. Just off of job experience and security clearance. So now I'm thinking about resumes. How can I show up those cunts and make more money?! Become Microsoft Certified!!! Yes! I will do that!!!!..... or so I thought....

Microsoft courses are just one step away from Hell. I have taken four classes, and I dont think that I have collected any knowledge from them. As hard as I try to pay attention, I space out within about 10 seconds, then the little blue 'e' internet explorer icon catches my attention, then I'm gone. The material is boring, the practices aren't useful for real-world useage, and don't get me started on the teachers... whoa boy the teachers.... It's like these people are too geeky for their own good! I think that is why I'm not a super genious at my job yet. It's because I'm not a Star Trek fan and I don't play computer games in my spare time. I don't speak binary, and no, I didn't create that script or create that webpage in html. But you know what? I have all the certificates and training that will make me that paycheck, and believe me, it's going on that resume!

However, I will NEVER become Microsoft Certified.

Razor's right! There also seems to be a flood of these people into the market, most of the people I know who have this Cert. even have a hard time just installing Windows let alone supporting it. Even I know more than most these people and I write code not manage Windoze! Currently most of the stuff I write is pure Win32 apps, but we're looking at Linux as an option. If I had any advise to give you it would be to learn more Linux, specifically RedHat AND SuSe. I read an article the other day how larger companies are looking for people with Linux skills. RedHat and SuSe seem to have more support available for larger companies, so these are the main two a lot of companies are looking into.
Good luck!
cheers,

IMHO, the security clearance alone is worth it's weight in gold.

I always wondered why I had to do book reports when I was in High School. It wasn't the subject that mattered, it was the process of investigation, formulating thoughts, and effectivly expressing it into a report. I don't recall a teacher ever telling me that - then again I was pretty stoned in High School ;)

Just crunch through the classes. I personally just do self study and some hand on work for certification and it works fine for me. I've always had a tough time sitting through classes unless it's something I'm really lost on or can't find decent information about.

The good thing learning that crap is that it may be pertinent knowledge in the future. I think you'll be surprised how it may help even if not directly related to your job - it's one of those things that will be meaningless until it happens, and you always need a Plan B. As an IT consultant, this "other" knowledge has led to some contracts which might not otherwise have been attainable. Then again, I could be totally wrong :)

What I'm doing right now is dealing w/ email flow, antivirus gateways, and bridgeheads for the 3rd largest network in the US. I know that sounds all fancy, but if a civillian job took just that info alone, and stuck me in a job, I am afraid that they'll expect me to be a complete guru of the stuff.... there's no way in hell that I'm reenlisting, so transitioning to the civillian life is starting to play a big role in what education I'm absorbing. I really want that check! :)

Or I could just be like this other dumb girl that I work with- she got a job at a bank to teach employees how to use Microsoft Office, and she's making $81,000 a year minimum!!

I've never had any experience with Cisco, but it's all around my workplace. My workload right now is pretty large, but I'll keep in mind to get into some Cisco classes before I get out. Thanks for the advice.

I'm still in the damn Microsoft class right now.... I'm in "Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Environment" woop woop. God this sucks.

Do Cisco certifications in networking, you don't need to compete against so many monkeys for a job. Its less geeky facts and more conceptual so it suits a woman better. Better money too.
