At a first glance you would say that there is not much in common between TaTu and The Sex Pistols.
How can a Girlie pop band out of Russia be similar on any level to head bangers like the Sex Pistols?
The two groups are at diametrically opposed sides of the Rock music industry and by studying them quite a few facets of the rock music industry are shown quite graphically.
Both groups burst onto the music scene with spectacularly successful albums that were both on the outskirts of the whole industry. ( Pop on one hand and Punk on the other.) Then they imploded just as quickly and spectacularly.
But how and why did this happen.
Inside the answer to that puzzle is the answer to how every artist from whatever medium can become extremely successful but and if not careful very short-lived.
A. They had strong creative management.
In the case of the Sex Pistols it was Malcolm McLaren who essentially came up with their image, helped put the band together, and worked as their manager.
In TaTu's case it seems that the true creative direction came from the co-producer Elena Kiper who quit over differences with Ivan Shapalov, their manager.
B. They alluded quite graphically to extreme sexuality.
The Sex Pistols whole image was based very closely on the S&M experience with the belts, chains buckles etc along with forms of self mutilation. A lot of this was invented by the Pistols themselves as they pushed hard at the boundaries existing in society.
TaTu's image was the brainchild of Shapalov's fantasies. He has admitted searching porn engines on the internet and realising the highest demand is for underage porn and lesbianism. From this he constructed the whole image and the girls played it to the max.
Unfortunately as someone once said "you can fool some of the people some of the time but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time."
With the Sex Pistols they started to unravel when they went to America. Of course there were problems with Sid's drug habit but I think the real problem was that America was a lot wealthier and the kids did not have the extreme disaffection with society that was present in England.
With TaTu it started to unravel when Yulia became pregnant and her health became badly affected by it. She then tired of the whole Lesbian pretence which must have been very hard to keep up.
C. Both groups were ultimately screwed by their management.
The remaining Sex Pistols are still quite bitter about the amount of money Malcolm McLaren took and how little they got for their efforts.
TaTu sacked their manager who it would seem managed to siphon off all the money given to them by the record company for the production of their next album.
So the recipe for success as an artist seems to be that you need to surround yourself with extremely creative people.
You also need to be quite talented; and I don't care what anyone says all members of these groups had some amazing talents to bring to the group.
You need to be producing a unique product that speaks to your audience on multiple levels.
And finally you need to be smart enough to know when you are being screwed and who is doing the screwing.

Kent I do NOT listen to TaTu and in fact have only ever had the misfortune to hear one of their songs when driving with my daughter. I couldn't care if they ever made another record or not. I just found it interesting to see the parrallels between the two bands.

Pretty Vacant...............In fact this was the first video I saw of them with Johny cavorting around the stage in a staight jacket. It totally blew my mind particularly when seen in the context of the other music at the time.

Buddy if I had included the whole deal on the Pistols it would have made several pages minimum. You see I am also an old cunt and I also like to research things extensively before putting fingers to keyboard.
The only thing I was interested in, in this post, was the points of similarity between the groups.
I don't think you give the Pistols enough credit for their actual musicianship either. Apart from Sid they were all bloody good musos, and Glen wrote some amazing lyrics, which is what gives the album Never Mind The Bollocks the brilliance that it is.
I don't quite know where you are going with the spawning of the independent labels because The Sex Pistols were always with majors. Specifically EMI and A&M and Virgin.
I think the development of the whole Indy scene was more attributable to Grunge than anything.
As someone wrote somwhere there is punk, which is the pistols, and there is punk rock which is everyone else.
Even Avryl whatever her name is, reckoned she was somhow punk, although at the time she had never even heard the Pistols.
Now perhaps you could point out the fanciful bits to me.

Some interesting points but factually wanting and rather fanciful. The Sex Pistols instigated a potent musical revolution that gave way to everything from allowing kids with only basic knowledge of their instruments to make records to a surge in the number of independent record labels. I know this bacause I am an old fuckand I was there. Tatu??? 'Nuff said.
Some points that the two groups did share in common I felt you left out. Notably that both groups featured human beings in their number, although admittedly not the same number but - and this could be just coincidence - Tatu had exactly half the number of humans that the Pistols had. And that's a fact you can take to the bank.
I do like Tatu though, esp that pic with the white panty thing going on. The girl on the left is hot.

I've been listening to the Sex Pistols since I was a toddler (my parents got me into them). Sure, I knew that they were put together and had an image pasted on, but they were one of the firsts groups to do what they did, and I like the music.
