My son was born 8/30/04 at 10:14 a.m. central time. He was taken by cesaeran section because the OB/GYN felt that his size was prohibitive for a natural birth (the last ultrasound on 8/28 indicated he was somewhere between 9 pounds and 10.5 pounds). He's our first, and mom was having issues late (swelling, sugar issues, etc) so we all decided c-section was best.
We were warned that boys taken by c-section tend to have a condition called transient tachypnea which is indicated by rapid, shallow breathing from fluid-build up in the lungs. As we were told, natural birth and being forced down through the birth canal expels most of the fluid present in the lungs. C-section babies don't have this natural expulsion, so they're breathing tends to be labored for as long as a week, and in boys the effect tends to be more pronounced and lasts longer.
All medical babble aside, I had no idea how completely heartrending it was going to be to watch my son labor so hard just to live. He has been on oxygen since birth, has an IV in his head (his oxygenation is poor, so finding veins for IV in his arms was about impossible), and a feeding tube down his throat (his breathing is so rapid and shallow that bottle feeding is not possible). I've taken pictures but hate them because of all the life support implementations being used to keep him going.
Five days later, his condition has changed very little. Aside from lots of gas (just like dad), he isn't breathing steadily on his own yet. We have gotten consults from everyone from genetics to physical therapy to occupational health to pediatric neurology and as yet, nobody can find anything obviously not right.
I am trying to be a good husband to my wife and be rock solid for her because she is tearing herself apart trying to figure out what she did wrong so as of yet, I have no outlet for my grief and it is eating me up. Tomorrow we have to consider whether or not to put our son on a ventilator to try to force his breathing to slow or whether or not we should wait it out. I don't know what to do or who to talk to for the first time in my life. I also don't have the answers or who to even ask to get the answers we need.
So I need your help. I need a miracle not for me, but for my son, and I need your support.
We were allowed to take one picture with all the tubes removed.

I'll bet the kid is thrilled to have his picture posted in this dump.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
His reaction was a long, drawn out fart, followed by a wooshing, squishy sound in his diaper.
Anyone ever hear of a syndrome related to chromosone 22q (possible deletion of a chain in this chromosome)? Next possibility and I haven't had much luck finding anything on the internet about it. Doctors won't say much until they know there is something there.

Such a great thing to become a parent. It must be so hard not to be able to celebrate fully. Your baby just needs a little extra time to build his strength. Looks to me like he's already thinking about his first post.
On another note - clearly you are concerned about your child and your wife, make sure you put yourself on the list.

"YOU WILL MAKE YOUR KID HAVE COMPLEXES"
Didn't know that was possible with a 13 day old still in intensive care, but whatever you say.
Update (for those who care).
Brought kid home 9/8 on Apnea Monitor, Oxygen, NasoGastric Feeding, and blood saturation monitor.
9/10 Apnea episodes, tachycardia and tachypnea, blood saturation consistenly below 90%. Taken to emergency room and re-admitted to Newborn Intensive Care.
9/11 transferred to Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana and admitted to Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Cardiologist suspects possible vascular ring around trachea of aorta (possible double aortic arch, with the aorta wrapping around the trachea; i.e. when agitated, blood flow increases, constricting the trachea, which in turn increases breathing rate, but lowers oxygen saturation). Vascular tests will contine on 9/13 to determine diagnosis and if surgical intervention is needed.
Jesus Christ.

On a side note, can you imagine how in ten or eleven years, you'll be showing the kid this post, and saying, "These people all wished you well. Obviously, they hadn't actually MET you. I hope that they never do and realize how you turned out."
I'm joking. Think happy thoughts.

Finally some good news.
CPAP (thank you, Circe, that's what it was) stabilized his breathing and in 24 hours they are going to take him off of it and see if he maintains on his own.
Genetic screen showed no disorders or obvious genetic difficulties.
CBC and Chem7 were negative (no infections or issues) and glucose, B12, calcium, phosphorous levels are all normal.
Head CT, Upper G1, EKG all normal.
Tomorrow he's getting an apnea screen and a metabolic screen in addition to some additional neurological testing to confirm the results of the other testing.
I swear that he's gotten better because of my blathering here. He's gone from sleeping 24/7 to Mom and I spending almost two hours with him today alert and reactive. The relief is overpowering.
I cannot thank you all enough for your kind words to a total stranger.

I know it's hard now but things will get better. He looks like a fighter (so cute btw!). My friend's baby girl had that when she was born but only very mildly. The only thing you could notice was that she sounded very congested when she breathed. You'd think they'd have thought of a device to simulate mum's birth canal or something so that bub can get that "massage" and avoid the condition.
Here's hoping your bub is better soon :)

What a beautiful baby!
A similar thing happened to my Godson. He had a natural birth, but had the fluid built up on his lungs anyway. He was in the hospital, on 100% oxygen, for nine days. He couldn't bottle feed and when he finally had slowed his breathing down enough to eat, it was by tube. They put a pacifer in his mouth so he would correlate sucking with the full sensation the tube was bringing to his belly.
Anyway, he went home at a month old, on an apnea monitor. They ended up diagnosing him with Central Apnea, and he had to take caffeine citrate for a slow heartbeat as well. He's now a healthy 4-year-old kid.
They'll figure out what's wrong and no matter what it is, you and your wife and most importantly you're darling baby, will get through it. Like others have said, medicine has come such a long way. I can't imagine what it's like to watch your baby fight to live and I won't pretend I can. I don't know if you're a religious person or not, but he'll be in my prayers.

Hey, I was born way too soon, spent time in the plastic box as well, and this was, well, let's just say it wasn't yesterday. I think Gunsmoke was still on TV then. (Jesus!) Anyhow, medicine has come a long way since then. Have faith and hang in there. Before you know it he's gonna be sixteen and a day, bugging you for the keys to your 'old' gasmobile (since mom's car is still plugged into the charger and electric sucks anyway) and you'll be saying, "That damned kid..."

Congratulations on the birth of your son.
Transient tachypnea usually resolves itself after three days or so. If there's nothing else wrong (and with the amount of tests they run on sickly newborns, they probably would have found it by now if there were) it probably just means that your boy is taking a little longer.
I assume by respirator, you mean CPAP? I'm not really understanding why you might decide against it; if it helps, then do it. It's probably the best thing for him.
