The glass is clean. It's clear. He takes it for granted that it would be. It always has been.
Pouring his fill into the glass, he watches as the fluid races along the smooth surface. It's overjoyed to find the new territory, relishing the new adventure. The smell is strong and inviting. It's hard to resist. It's been so long between drinks.
Cradling the glass, his hands trembling, he imagines the satisfaction it could give, and anticipates the warm sensation it will bring in his chest and throughout his body, as it flows inside him.
He feels nervous, and a little clumsy.
Ice is dropped in, disturbing the calm surface, turning the fluid slightly murky. The drink becomes cold. The glass doesn't seem so clear anymore.
Lifting the glass to his lips, he pauses. Thoughts are forming in his mind. They have been there for a while, ever so softly nudging him. Prodding him. He didn't pay them much attention before, but they seem to be speaking louder now, more intent to be heard.
This isn't his to drink.
He wants it too much, and it doesn't belong to him.
Resisting the strong urges to swallow the contents and drown the now persistent voices in his head, he lowers the glass, the choice making him wince, and shake silently.
Closing his eyes, he empties the contents into the sink. The lack of vision doesn't help him. It only makes the sound of it splattering all over the metal surface that more profound.. He holds it there, resignedly, until it stops dripping.
Placing the glass down, he walks away.
And so it sits there, on the grooved metal surface. Traces still remain. Slowly they make their way to the bottom of the glass and meet there, forming a ring at the bottom. They dry and harden in the glass, burying themselves into the slight imperfections of it's surface.
Left alone long enough ...they will cause a stain.
He returns and takes the glass, lifting it carefully, taking care washing it, doing his best to try and remove the hard remnants. After drying it, he gently puts it back on the shelf.
...It looks relatively clean.
One day he'd like to use it again.
