Chapter I: http://www.ubersite.com/m/43146
_______________________________________________________________

"No, I don't want to see that one. Come on, we saw the movie you wanted to last time!" Nicole pleaded.

"Well, fine, hon... I want you to enjoy the flick, so... what do you want to see?" responded an exasperated James. He had really wanted to see "Die Hard IV: Cowboy's Sunset".

"I've been dying to see 'A Rose By Any Other Name'... Besides, it's not like we'll actually see the end of the movie..." giggled Nicole.

That's all James needed to hear. A sappy romance flick, and Nicole would be putty in his arms.

"Two for 'A Rose' at 9:15, please."

It was Saturday night, and the cinema lobby was packed with eager movie-goers intent upon purchasing excessive amounts of high-calorie treats. A jumbo popcorn, two boxes of Twizzlers, some Juju Mints, a box of Sour Patch Kids, a large bag of Skittles, and oh... four medium diet cokes.

This cinema in particular was fairly new. Stadium seating, well-furnished grounds, live potted foliage, and even an arcade for the high school kids to amuse themselves with while they waited to sneak into the next show. Velvet ropes separated lines surrounding an island in the center of the tiled lobby, where teenagers manned their posts at the snack booths. Various patterns of colored light danced and played along the walls from small laser projectors on the ceiling, and high above everything was a domed glass ceiling where one could see out into the night sky.

That was about to change.

*----------*----------*

The lights never actually went out. The blazed on through the dark, and that was the peculiar nature of that very blackness that had begun to seep into the building from an unknown source. It spilled in through every transparent and translucent orifice, turning the lights into tiny points that offered no illumination but rather intensified the fear of the people inside, who instinctively ran for the exits. People pounded on the steadfast doors, to no avail. To those outside, it had appeared as if the building had filled itself up with a thick ink, and although they could hear the screams, the wails, and the attempts to smash the windows, they were all eerily dampened, as if heard through a mile-long tunnel. None stayed to determine the cause.

As the sound inside the structure built to a cacophonous roar, and tears streamed down the face of countless children and adults alike, a single noise could be heard above all others, and brought about their cessation. It was the crash of glass shattering into millions of fragments, as people moved to get out of the way of the falling debris from the former skylight. The hush that fell upon the crowd was more intense than the noise that preceded it, as a powerful wind whipped through every corner of the lobby and ran its icy fingers across each person's back.

All eyes went up to the ceiling, where a glow had begun to stream down upon the island in the center. All eyes observed a man descend, seemingly supported by the glow, onto the ceiling of the island, where he stood and surveyed the crowd. That glow that continued to surround him was not of this world; it was fierce, and illuminated the seeping darkness, but was not light as it had been seen before. Somehow, the glow was like a different, darker kind of darkness. A deep blackness so intense as to frighten the lighter dark around it away.

Inside this diabolical glow, the wind whipped back the man's long, black mane, as he outstretched his leather-clad arms. Wearing dark, tight-fitting clothing, and standing at nearly eight feet tall, the people could observe that he was quite well built. He looked as if he could lift a house without breaking a sweat. His eyes, which were but tiny pools of an infinite abyss, burned into those of each that looked upon him, and it felt to everyone as if he was looking directly at them personally, peering into their soul.

Nobody dared to speak. It was as if the words had been ripped from their throats before they had a chance to utter them. Nobody save for this man that was the attention of every being that resided within the room.

"PEOPLE!" cried the man in leaden tones like the slamming of crypt doors. "You have been judged, and found wanting! The time of reckoning has come to pass. You have sown evil upon this land, and now you shall reap it!"

The crowd waited no longer to voice their dissent. Beseeching supplications for redemption echoed across the fierce wind that swept the broken glass and small tornados of dirt through the air.

"ENOUGH! There is no escaping the hand of fate," said the man smugly.

*----------*----------*

Eric stood at the end of a long row of cars, observing the growing tempest above the building. He felt the people inside, deep in his very soul. He felt their hearts cry out to him. He felt their abundant pain, their sorrow, and their desire to live to see another day.

He came to a decision, and spoke in a soft tone under his breath, barely audible to anyone but himself.

"No."

To be continued.

This really helped nail the image of the character...

Just warming up my typing fingers for UberMadness. Watch out, User 7539.

I want to share something with you -- the three little sentences that will
get you through life. Number one, `Cover for me.' Number two, `Oh, good
idea, boss.' Number three, `It was like that when I got here.'
