NECROSIAC 15
Mattaius pulled the .45 automatic from his shoulder holster and flipped the safety off while at the same time Terri used her free hand to pull her phone from the clip at her waist and flip it open.
Beside her Markus had begun to chant and Mattaius could see a subtle greenish gold glow begin to pulse from the elbow of his free hand to the tips of his fingers. The devil on his forehead danced from one foot to another like a child impatient to play.
Terri spoke quickly into the phone to Control and then listened intently and hurriedly addressed the group.
"Groups of 6 coming from front and back. Surveillance reports at least two targets from the front group don't have heat signatures. Snipers and Strike Team were pulled three days ago so we have one agent for backup in the Alley and one in the Apartment across from the front."
Tasker looked indecisively at Pitt "I'm supposed to stay with you but I think I would be most effective with the agent in the Alley. We all stay here we're going to get assblasted"
Mattaius nodded "Go"
Tasker exited into the stock room and slammed the door behind him.
Terri and Mattaius both moved behind the long counter top and faced the front entrance.
Terri brought the phone up "Tell them to wait until we've determined the..."
The sound of yelling on the other side of the door told her the message was too late. The agent out front had jumped the gun. They could barely make out his frantic yells as he identified himself and ordered the group to drop their weapons.
They exchanged worried glances and started towards the door but stopped as a single gunshot sounded out and a bullet punched through the front door to imbed itself in the wall a foot and a half away from Terri's head. Mattaius thought he heard her mumble "I'm getting tired of that" as they instinctively ducked below the heavy wooden counter.
For a second everything was quiet and then from the street out front came another shout and the sound of two more pistol shots followed immediately by a high pitched burst of automatic submachine gun fire. They both recognized the sound, 9 millimeter, probably Uzi.
Whoever had come to the shop meant business.
The sound of gunfire disappeared as quickly as it had come and the interior of the shop filled with the whisper of air from the ceiling vents.
Still nothing from the direction of the Alley...
It had been two years since Mattaius had been in a similar situation and he found himself strangely shaken. Adrenaline was causing him to breath heavily, the sound filling his head like the pulse of a strong wind. He wanted to lose himself in the rush of endorphins flooding his body, to burst through the front door into the street, gun and expletives blazing. The urge was strong but common sense was stronger. He forced himself to take a deep breath and muttered "Go easy" to himself.
Terri gave him a quick glance, eyebrow raised and the two of them slowly stood above the counter top pistols trained on the door.
The sound of several footsteps came from behind the door followed by unintelligible mutterings. It sounded to Mattaius like a heated debate but the heavy door the agency had installed to replace the previously destroyed one muffled the sound too much for him to be sure.
Behind them in the storeroom they heard the unmistakable sound of the back door being thrown open with a metallic squeak and crash followed closely by a single thump on the front door.
Terri turned her head to Mattaius and mouthed "Where's Markus?"
Mattaius shrugged and turned back towards the entrance as the door exploded into the room in a thousand pieces.
The explosion was over before either of them could think to duck down and almost immediately a figure appeared in the newly created void, submachine gun held almost casually at his side.
Mattaius blinked as a momentary flash of insight shot through his mind like the first bullet through the door.
They weren't expecting this. They came prepared but they weren't really expecting a battle.
Mattaius and Terri opened fire in unison as the figure in front of them stopped in the doorway for a second and began to raise his weapon. Two redeemer slugs each found their target sending the silhouette in the doorway reeling out into the street to fall in a heap on the sidewalk.
Shouts and the clatter of small arms fire in the store room behind them let them know that Markus had finally made his move.
Somewhere beyond the entrance in front of them someone muttered a curse. Mattaius steeled himself preparing to fire again as a submachine gun filled hand jutted out from around the corner of the doorway and began to spray the room with hot lead. For a split second his reflexes failed as the sputtering line of death arched towards him but Terri's instincts remained true and she grabbed a fistful of his jacket and hauled him back down behind the counter.
The sound of slugs hitting wood mixed with the clatter of the weapon as speeding metal drilled into their cover, but luckily the velocity of the small caliber bullets wasn't enough to punch through.
The submachine gun let out a dry click as it ran dry. They heard the sound of a clip ejected but the rattle of another weapon started up almost immediately, this time closer. Mattaius recognized the tactic immediately. One adversary advancing slowly and firing while the other reloaded then switching until their prey was overcome and killed. He toyed with the thought of sticking his gun hand above the counter top and randomly spraying the room but he knew the distance was too small. He'd probably take lead in his hand or weapon and then he'd be no good to anyone.
The sound of chanting joined the controlled rapidly nearing rattling of their assailant's weapons and immediately the tattoos on his back burst into feverish itching as the magic within them fought to counter the Necromancers spells.
Mattaius looked to Terri for inspiration but her face told him she had nothing.
Time was running out.
Frantically he looked around himself for an option, a tool, anything to turn the edge back in their favor but the only thing he had a clear line of site of was the wall.
The wall...
Mattaius remained crouched and brought up his pistol to take aim at a spot where a thread of magic emerged from the wall then fired three shots in rapid succession. The rune stone imbedded inside flew across the room on the third shot but the sound of its impact on the far wall told him it had not met resistance on the way.
The constant hollow thumping of bullets into the counter seemed to be getting louder and the rattling of the submachine guns was close now. Mattaius cursed under his breath and fired another three rounds at a beam slightly closer to him, this time freeing the stone on the second shot. Another squeak and flash of dust appeared on the wall followed closely by a wet slap as it slammed into something part way across the room.
The weapon of the assailant closest to Mattaius stopped simultaneous with a high pitched shriek of pain. Almost immediately another shriek sounded this one longer and less human.
Beside him Terri didn't wait for a signal. With a quick bounce she popped up and fired two shots then dropped down again in time to avoid the bullets of the second machine gunner as he opened fire.
The shooter was close now, almost at his kill zone and they could feel bits of wood peppering their hair as controlled bursts chewed apart the top of the counter.
Mattaius changed out his clip and prepared for an inevitable last stand.
On the other side of the counter all hell broke loose.
A frantic pained voice shouted several words in a language Mattaius recognized as Deadspeak, the language used by Necromancers to control undead bound to their will. He couldn't make out the exact words but the panic in the voice was unmistakable. The shrieking of the first shooter dropped to a low wail and then a grunt as it mixed with the sound of a physical struggle and then a shout.
"Get it off me!"
Another deeper voice yelled again in Deadspeak and the pounding of lead against the countertop stopped as the shooter turned his attention elsewhere.
Behind them in the storeroom the sounds a muffled explosion sounded the end of the Markus' battle.
Mattaius and Terri didn't wait for an invite. They moved as one, almost jumping above the counter and emptied their weapons into the enemy on the other side.
Terri's pistol went dry first. She changed out clips with practiced ease and commanded herself to a semblance of self control as Mattaius' weapon followed suit.
The room filled again with the hum of air moving through the ceiling vents as they sucked stinging cordite fumes out of the room.
Before them on the ground lay four motionless bodies.
They took a moment to take what felt like their first breath in days and broke into the practiced actions of two people who had been comrades in arms for years.
Terri raised her gun and moved around the counter towards the bodies on the floor. Mattaius knew exactly what she would do next. She would send a redeemer slug into the head of each of the corpses. They'd learned long ago that one could never be too sure with the dead and their masters.
Mattaius moved to the side of the door to the storeroom and changed out the clip in his weapon.
"Tasker?"
Behind the door came Markus labored voice. "Yeah...Clear"
Mattaius pushed the door open slowly, weapon at the ready.
The storeroom before him looked like a slaughterhouse. Blood splattered the walls in several places and a crater in the floor in the middle of the room held a mix of bodies in a twisted gore spattered pile.
Tasker stood in front of the open door to the basement, weapon still in his right hand hanging stiff at his side. His left hand was raised to the ceiling as what looked to Mattaius like bright white smoke flowed out of it and pinned a writhing spitting undead thing in a pair of filthy jeans and torn white t-shirt to the roof.
Tasker glanced over his shoulder at Mattaius, beads of sweat standing out on his forehead. "Guns dry... how about giving a guy a hand"
Mattaius approached Tasker's side and raised his weapon to the abomination on the roof. The front of its t-shirt was emblazoned with a large yellow happy face with a fake bloody bullet hole in the forehead. Above it were the words "Have a nice day"
Out of the corner of his eye he could see Spivey point at the ceiling then hunch over, arms against his stomach and shaking as if the hilarity of it all was too much to stand.
Mattaius returned his attention to the smile hanging above him and said "You first" then made the bullet hole real and stepped back as Tasker released the spell and let the carcass drop to the cement floor with a sickening wet smack.
Behind them in the main room came a shot from Terri's pistol as she began to ensure the dead stayed that way.
Markus flinched in alarm and began to feed a new clip into his pistol but Mattaius put a hand on the big mans hunched shoulder and said "Relax. She's just making sure"
Markus turned to him with a disapproving frown on his face "That's not exactly Agency Policy..."
"Yeah well old habits die hard I guess"
Mattaius turned to survey the mess in the center of the room. The bodies were a mangled and grotesquely twisted mass of flesh, concrete and metal shelving. Some of them were missing parts. He guessed the crater in the floor ran almost six inches at its deepest point but it was hard to tell considering its grizzly contents.
Markus returned his weapon to its holster under his suit and said "I had to implode them. The Casters were wearing vests I think."
"Since when did they get this organized?"
Tasker shrugged and nodded towards the crater "The surveillance guy's in there somewhere... he was dead before I cast." He pointed an exhausted shaking hand at Mattaius' neck "You're bleeding"
Mattaius put a tentative hand to his neck and winced as he pulled a splinter of wood from it. "Just a scratch... You look like you could use a break. Why don't you take a seat and call this in. I'm going to check on Terri"
Without waiting for a response he returned to the front of the shop as Terri put a bullet into the forehead of the last of their assailants.
"What do we have?" he asked.
Terri stood up and addressed her partner with a thoughtful yet worried look "Your little trick with the wall saved our asses. I caught one of the Necros in the arm when I popped up and shot so his pet turned on him. Both casters are wearing vests but we drilled one in the neck and the other in the head... Matt... what the hell is going on here? Since when do Necromancers wear bullet proof vests and give their pets automatic weapons? The casters are dressed in combat gear for Christ Sakes... Your neck..."
"It's just a scratch. Your face is cut."
Terri put a hand to the shallow cut on her cheek and smiled ruefully "We're lucky the shrapnel from the door didn't take our heads off... I'd better check the street"
"I'm with you"
They took turns stepping over the corpse on the sidewalk in front of the shop and stood beside each other squinting as their eyes adjusted to the day's brightness. Directly to the left of the door another previously undead corpse lay crumpled against the wall of the building and across the street from them a body in a plain brown suit lay face down in a slowly growing pool of blood.
A quick check confirmed that both bodies had suffered fatal wounds but they put a redeemer slug into both to be sure. One shot in the head of the previously undead and one in the leg of the agent.
Terri holstered her weapon and they moved back towards the shops interior. Mattaius carried the agents ID and pistol as well as the would-be assassin's submachine gun. Half way back Terri cleared her throat and said "Did you take care of the bodies in the storeroom?"
Mattaius frowned shook his head "Not enough of them left to worry about... Tasker doesn't seem too impressed with our methods so I left him there and told him to contact control"
They stepped back into the gloom of the shop and let their eyes re-adjust before beginning the gruesome task of searching the bodies and collecting weapons. In the distance they could hear the sound of Ambulance sirens.
Mattaius spoke to Terri as he rifled through the black combat gear of one of the Necros "This one is bleeding. He's probably only class one or two..."
"Yeah I noticed when I capped them. Matt... do you think they came for us?"
They looked at each other for a moment and then Pitt shook his head "No I don't think so. They sent the first shuffler through the door almost casually. I think they expected the place to be watched but not occupied... They came here for something but not us"
"The Runestones?"
"I don't know... they would be a handy thing for any Necro to have I guess. Seems like a pretty big group to send though"
Terri finished rifling through the gear of the body before her and stood up "It does seem like a lot. My gut tells me there's something else here... something important"
From the doorway at the back of the shop came Markus deep voice "It'll have to wait. We've been recalled... everyone's been recalled. Control wouldn't tell me why exactly but he let it slip that we're not the only team that's run into trouble today. I asked him about the ETA for the retrieval team... he said he couldn't give me one... They're all busy"
Terri looked at the floor in puzzlement "What the fuck is going on?"
"We're not going anywhere yet" said Mattaius "We're not going to leave whatever they came for sitting here for the next group of psychopaths that come along"
Markus took a step into the room and addressed Mattaius. His voice when he spoke was resolute, his face dead serious "I understand what you're saying but this order comes straight from Director Smith. I'm not going to disobey it without a damned good excuse"
Terri could tell from the resolute stance of both men that neither one of them was going to back down. She also knew Pitt well enough to understand that his temper would quickly reach a boiling point if Tasker didn't change his mind. Thankfully Spivey was nowhere to be seen. She stood up and clapped her hands twice to draw their attention away from each other "Gentlemen... boys, lets all take a deep breath. Orders are orders Matt. What say we go back to the office and see what's up? I'll come back with you tonight and we'll find whatever it is that's hiding here"
He began to shake his head but Terri cut him off with raised voice "I want to know what it is just as much as you Matt but I've had enough adventure for one afternoon. I could use a breather and a cup of coffee. How about we cut a lady some slack? We killed the bad guys. Whatever is here will keep"
"Terri..."
She cut him off again "Whatever is going down is big Matt. I've never heard of the Agency coming up short on a retrieval team or ordering a complete recall"
Mattaius looked between the two defiantly for a second then dropped his head in defeat and said "OK" He holstered his weapon and started towards the back room and the exit beyond. He hoisted the weapons in his hand and said "I'll put this stuff in the car. You two grab what's left"
He pushed past Tasker without looking at him and vanished from site into the storeroom.
Markus followed behind to collect what he could from the carnage in the storeroom while Terri busied herself with collecting weapons and ID from the bodies in the shop.
A short while later she finished and made to leave as two pistol shots sounded out from the Alley. She dropped the pile of weapons in her arms without thinking and drew her weapon while she ran to the exit.
She got outside in time to see Mattaius and Tasker standing just outside the door and looking at the front of the Agency sedan. The left front tire was flat and Pitt was nonchalantly re-holstering his pistol.
"Tasker" he said "How long does it usually take you to change a tire?"
Markus glared threateningly at Mattaius for and Terri prepared herself to get between the two men but after a moment the big man returned his gaze to the tire and began to chuckle.
"I don't know" he said "I'm pretty tired... could be awhile"
