JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) September 9th- A powerful explosion near the Australian embassy in Jakarta on Thursday killed at least three people and left more than 50 wounded, witnesses and officials said.
No one inside the heavily fortified embassy was wounded in the blast, said Lyndall Sachs, a spokeswoman for the Australian foreign ministry in Canberra. But local security officials said that an Indonesian security guard manning a post outside the gate died in the explosion, which occurred at 10:15 a.m.
Police declined to comment on the source of the explosion, but in the past several years Indonesia has been hit by a series of deadly bombings of western targets by militants linked to al-Qaida.
"The ground shook so hard I fell down. A huge column of white smoke rose up," said Joko Triyanto, a security guard, his arms bleeding from shrapnel wounds sustained in the explosion.
An Associated Press photographer on the scene saw at least three dismembered bodies on the wide, six-lane street close to the embassy. Four cars, including a police vehicle, and the embassy's high metal fence were damaged. The windows on at least 10 surrounding high-rise buildings were smashed.

A doctor at a nearby hospital said three bodies were brought into the morgue, and that more than 50 wounded people had been admitted.
Sachs said that windows of the embassy were shattered and that power in the building was down. The mission was immediately evacuated in line with standard procedures, she said.
In recent weeks several western embassies, including those of the United States and Australia, have warned their citizens about possible attacks by Muslim militants.
Last year, 12 people died in a suicide attack on the JW Marriott hotel in the same district. In 2002, more than 200 people died in an attack on two nightclubs on the tourist island of Bali.
Both attacks were blamed on Jemaah Islamiyah, a regional terror group with alleged links to al-Qaida. More than 150 people have been arrested over those attacks.

I hope I misunderstand you here but you seem to imply that bombing the American Embassy wouldn't be as bad, and wouldn't be hurting innocents. If that is what you are implying, then you are not any better than the savages who placed the bomb. I hope you are condemning any bombing of Embassies, but think that the typical Indo has more of a beef with the US.
Australia has done a lot more to interfere or anger people in Indo than the US. East Timur, arresting fisherman, the list goes on. I am not saying who is wrong but they have had a lot of conflict. What has the US done to upset Indonesian people? Support Israel, Invade Iraq? How does that affect Indonesia, just because it is mostly muslim? How many churches are bombed, and innocent christians killed in Indonesia each year? Does that give me a reason or a duty to hate Indonesia as a christian?

No indoninja I am not implying that it is ok to hit the American Embassy. These terrorists (which we would call the Jemaah Islamiyah or JI) are actually close associates of the Al-Qaeda network. So in their twisted world it seems more logical to bomb the American ifidel, rather then Aussie Embassy.
We are not looking at Indonesian Policy, or Aussie Policy for that matter, here when it comes to the JI cells . They could care less about East Timur.. or Fishermen arrested.
And it might sound dumb but yes.. that is how the JI works.

That is EXACTLY the point. We're talking about irrational idiots. and YES, i don't understand why, but yess that is the sentiment of the JI. And no, it doesn't affect Indonesia.. it affects the JI.
When Singapore supported the US with its "war on terror" the singapore government did so without making a big fuss out of it. Bush at one point then started thanking all his supporters and yeah mentioned singapore. 2 weeks later cells were arrested with recce tapes and plans to bomb a few sites in Singapore. That was when the first few JI cells were uncovered.

falco she said she could not find the news on it and was checking uber, that is why I made the post because I was not allowed to cut and paste into a review.
Further if I was hitwhoring anything I do think that I would put something sexy in the title and perhaps not make most of my posts from midnight until 1:30 am east coast time....
To the people arguing about indonesia and islam, prominent indonesian leaders have spread hatred of israel in disgusting ways. The truth is that it is a minority of muslims who feel like killing civilians and that is why the number of people to blot out is thankfully small. Having studied the koran I can say that were I a muslim I would be more like Bin Laden and a fundamentalist than like the peace loving muslims. When I read the Bible I say that later text replace or inform previous ones, and verses like there is no compulsion in religion from sura 3 I believe but do not remember off the top of my head are replaced or informed later by verses that urge the listener to strive and kill the infidel.

Thanks, I found out all about it eventually though. Being here and all. I was just stressing about my dad at the time.
And like my dad was saying to me today, not all Indonesians want to kill us. Not even close. But however, if just 1% of the population are the crazy ones, that's 2.2 million people. That's quite a few...

Don.. you fail to realise NOT all muslims in Indonesia are terrorist freaks. It's like saying since Bush is a Moron, All americans are morons too. Some of us muslims fear for our lives as well. uhm .. but it wasn't the peace loving ones that blew up the gate wasn't it? Much respect we do have for the Aussie and Brit forces that died here during WWII. But they died here in the name of the Queen, not in the name of the people. The brits buggered out of Singapore even though they outnumbered and outgunned the Japs. The point here is not remembering the Valour of these men of days gone by. I, personally, am indebted to an Aussie officer who saved my grandparents' lives back in those days. The point is , If you want to kill these bastards, kill the RIGHT ones. Why ain't anyone doing anything when Israeli tanks crush Palestinian women and children? Ask any South East Asian, and they will say they love the Aussies. We might hate the Yanks, we might hate the Brits, but we sure as hell love the Aussies. Good people they are. All that being said, nobody deserves to die before their time. I am not afraid to admit I am a muslim. It would probably be met with a tirade of "you slore" , "fuck of you raghead", or "-2 DIE BIATCH". But punish the guilty, not punish us all, cuz if you do, then you're just as bad as the terrorists.

I'm with Donne fan... Muslims are the source of the world's woes. Why the hell would they need to attack the Australian embassy in Indonesia? What purpose does this serve?
The "peaceful" muslims sit by as their brothers and children destroy innocent lives in the name of Allah.
Do these "peaceful" muslims remember the sacrifice Australia made during World War II to get them out of the hands of the Japanese? Nope. Instead they blow up an embassy.
War is ugly, but Alexander the Great and Ghengis Khan had it right: You annilate your enemies so they cannot live another day to fight. So they make their choice: Be peaceful, or die. There is no in-between and you take their whole culture with them if you have to in the name of world peace.
