Maybe the documents that surfaced regarding Bush's service are indeed real, though it is looking dubious. I sure hope so for Dan Rathers and CBS.

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20040910/D850SGS80.html

"Independent document examiner Sandra Ramsey Lines said the memos looked like they had been produced on a computer using Microsoft Word software. Lines, a document expert and fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, pointed to a superscript - a smaller, raised "th" in "111th Fighter Interceptor Squadron" - as evidence indicating forgery.

Microsoft Word automatically inserts superscripts in the same style as the two on the memos obtained by CBS, she said.

"I'm virtually certain these were computer generated," Lines said after reviewing copies of the documents at her office in Paradise Valley, Ariz. She produced a nearly identical document using her computer's Microsoft Word software."

_____________________________________________________

Anyone who has read documents generated pre-1985 knows that there was no such thing as a Superscript on typewriters at that time. Now, maybe the DOD had an incredibly state of the art typewriter that was used in this instance, but come on. We're talking about the DOD. They spend their money on missiles and guns, not typewriters and computer software.

Lesson: If you are going to attempt to forge a document from the 1970's, use a typewriter from the fucking 70's

This is just nuts. This country gets weirder and weirder by the day.

Now I just want someone to check and see if his diploma was forged. There's no way that guy made it through Yale.

They're fakes.

The superscript is one obvious red flag that would point to forgery. However, these papers allegedly came from a personal file library from a colonel that died years ago. First of all, why would this colonel keep somebody else's 30-year old personnel record? That is highly irregular and questionable as all hell. Usually, these things get filed away at a central filing location after a person gets out of the military. I also remember that the main filing center burnt a few years back because they blamed losing my records on a fire. They gave my father the same reason when he turned 60 and applied for his retirement.

How's that AJ?

"Killian died in 1984."

I love that the supposed author of the documents is a man who's been dead for 20 years.

Pretty damn funny.

Reminds me of Watergate-style scandals.

It isn't only about the memo itself either. It's about the whole situation around how it was "found" in a dead guy's files.

Anyone in the military would know that memos like that (which many people claim would not be written in the first place) are put into a personal file, not permanent records...and they are destroyed a year after you get out of service according to regulation. It is possible they remain in places where poor record keeping exists...

But, to have someone take personal records home with them and keep them as some kind of souvenir? Ridiculous at best. The dead man's wife and son agrees that this person did not keep records.

But, if you want something to surface out of nowhere...putting it on a dead guy (who can't speak for themselves) is the way to go.

Would Kerry and the democrats pull a stunt like this? Highly, highly unlikely.

Would the "good folks "at moveon.org do something like this? Without question.

Unfortunately, the republicans are brushing this off and ignoring the issue so nobody will be nailed for forging documents and damaging someone's reputation. All politics aside, if someone did this to you, wouldn't you be pissed?

Loki, if you ever said that I'd have to smack you. Negativety? I hate that word.

I used to deliver meals to old people and invalids. That can be damn dangerous, getting attacked by hungry old people. I must be qualified.

Now don't you all see what those dirty, no good democrats will stoop to.

I saw that too. It should be interesting to watch unfold. If I were a proper conspiracy theorist, I would say that they announced that these documents were forgeries on purpose so as to keep the story in the news. It reminds of me how funky the font is on those classic sports games, then I see the short shorts, huge afros, and long socks and can't take it seriously.

What are they going to say when our generation is the one in power and questions like these come out?

The democratic presidential nominee loki was quoted as saying, "War? Fuck that, people shoot at you if you go to war, I mean damn, I can't deal with that kind of negativity."

Does anyone else giggle like a child when they hear Chris Matthew on Hardball bring up his Peace Corp service whenever someone talks about the military? Oh yea Chris, I'm pretty sure that's exactly the same thing. Now that you mention it, I have on green pants today and I have to wear an id badge in the building so I guess that means that I too am in the military - who knew.
