Well not really... okay maybe a little bit.
With all this rumor about the president trying to get a draft initiated after the 2004 elections, I was wondering if any of it was true. I did some snooping and came across these two bills being presented to congress.
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c108:s.89:
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c108:h.r.163:
If your too lazy to read them I'll give you the jist of it.
It's called the Universal National Service Act of 2003. In short what it does is obligate every U.S. born citizen between the ages of 16 and 26 serve at least two years in the United States "not so volunteer" Army. From the looks of it the president can decide who and when people will serve the military and in what capacity. So, if one of his buddies friends wanted to get their kid out of service, well he'd just send them to the national guard to watch a communications tower or something.
Oh if your thinking, "Well I'm okay I am in college, or I'll just run to Canada when this thing comes around. I'll be safe." Think again Stan, According to a news source I just read:
"In December 2001, Canada and the U.S. signed a "smart border declaration," which could be used to keep would-be draft dodgers in. Signed by Canada's minister of foreign affairs, John Manley, and U.S. Homeland Security director, Tom Ridge, the declaration involves a 30-point plan which implements, among other things, a "pre-clearance agreement" of people entering and departing each country. Reforms aimed at making the draft more equitable along gender and class lines also eliminates higher education as a shelter. Underclassmen would only be able to postpone service until the end of their current semester. Seniors would have until the end of the academic year."
We haven't left you ladies out either! According to sec 10 there have been provisions made to recruit young ladies to be raped and beaten by our countries enemies along with the men! Sounds like fun.
My real concern with this is not that I have to serve, wait no that is my concern. WHAT THE FUCK! I thought this was a volunteer army not some fucking regiem. What the hell are we fucking China or something? Does Bush not have enough of our men and women dying for his petty war as it is? Now he wants to make it so that we have to go and fight his war whether we want to or not?
This is worse than a draft, a draft occurs when we desperately need more troops, no this will change the way America works forever. I ask that people be aware of this and not just let it make it's way through congress without a fight! Tell your friends, tell that puerto rican across the street who plays his boombox at 5:00 A.M. Tell your cats!
Brought to you by America, Home of the free... kinda.

Holy shit, get over it you little bitch. Do you have any idea how many countries have mandatory military service? You're just above that, right? You fucking pussy. Get the hell out of my country.

Backwards countries perhaps.
Stupid America and your constitutional faith in your leader. Here in Aus we need a referendum for this kind of shit. Not some corrupt dictator, uh, president.

Stabkill I'm korean and if I was a korean citizen I would be willing to serve my country to protect it from the North Koreans. Why? Because I know my enemy. I know that my war is just and fair. I know what I'm protecting and who I am protecting. I know there are no hidden agendas, like controling oil. I know that my war is a just one and that I am in the right. That is why if I was a korean citizen I would be more than willing to serve my time in ROK. Since I'm not a korean citizen and I'm an American citizten I do not have to serve mandatory time in a "volunteer" army. I chose to serve in america and if I chose not to serve to fight I should be able to chose. That's just my opinion though.
Brian... your just pissed because everyone hates Bush. I wonder how many republicans and democrats really do reside on this site.

I'd like to hear what a Korean would say about your post.
I know a story in which a Korean citizen who was raised in the USA went to visit his grandmother. He was nabbed up and forced to serve in the ROK army. He spoke flawless English and had a law degree. OUCH!!!
He wasn't even bitter or angry... Just like "Oh well." I guess he accepted it as part of his being Korean. I respect that person, big-time.

No?
I just think it is a sign of desperation, if it is not a legitamate attempt. Also, I think Kerry would pass the bill, but I don't think he'd have his vice president take it into his dungeon lair for nibbling first.

Oh well... I'm not getting drafted, the Army wouldn't even let me VOLUNTEER because I took ritalin when I was 10. They said something about impulsivity with weapons being a reason not to let me in, well if I had my gun I'd show th.... nevermind.

While I agree with most of what you say Bob I see it more as an outcry against our countries current status. These senators may have thought the only way to not get Bush elected was to try to get into the lime light a bill that everyone would disagree on and immediantly blame the president for.
Personally I think anyone would be better than Bush. It just shows how desperate democrats are to get him out of office.

HCP, never say never. You don't know what tomorrow brings. Nothing is absolute.
This issue really has nothing to do with EITHER presidential candidate. It is just the sour grapes of a minority group in our lower house.
If by some godawful chance this bill would make it through The House & all of its committees, The Senate & all of Its committees, Do you think that John Kerry would veto it?
My final comment here is that I think that it's sad that this was ever proposed, because it is just a childish form of protest that tied up our legislative system for no good reason. People in our governing body abusing the system to scare our population for protest's sake is stomach turning.

Bob so what your saying is that if we keep Bush in office there will be no draft. If we elect Kerry there will be a draft? That seems a bit farfetched to me.

Mandatory military service seems to work pretty well for Israel. What's the big deal? Love your country, but no so much that you'd be willing to fight for it? Even if Kerry was elected?
Just because legislation is proposed, doesn't mean it stands a snowball's chance of being passed. Read Bob's comments and try, just try, to unclench a little.

Seeing that I'm not a South Korean citizen and I was born in America, not some shit hole like say... Canada, then I have not dodged the korean draft whatsoever. In Korea there is no draft everyone must serve so many years in the military unless they go to graduate school.
Oh and Foolmang I thought you would have realized this by now, your rankings don't count.

Hell no they wouldn't.
GOP military policy involves more technology, not more men. This approach is more cost-effective, simply because it's an investment, not a revolving door. There is also less payroll and god forbid, death benefits paid out - basically less american blood spilled.
Vote Democrat, Vote pro-draft.

Okay, you all need to learn how to read and re-take 6th grade civics.
This bill was proposed and sponsored by six angry DEMOCRATS (imagine that!). Once a bill is proposed, it gets referred to a committee for a review. In this case it was referred to the Armed Services Comittee (these guys: http://armedservices.house.gov/about/members.html ) Note the REPUBLICAN majority on that commitee. THIS BILL WILL NEVER GET PAST THE COMMITTEE! Understand that? Good. Even if the bill had enough pork tacked onto it to get it through committee, it would then come before the ENTIRE House of Representatives, which again has a REPUBLICAN majority. IT WOULD NEVER PASS!
This is just a political shocker, meant to stir controversy in response to last years war appropriations. Also note that the bill is over a year old, which pretty much indicates that it has fizzled.
False alarm.
Now stop trying to spread panic.

Yes I really think they will get the bill through. Most likely it will be passed soemtime around June or July of 2005. I would much rather end up being wrong about it, but I don't won't to take a chance.
Oh and those people you named are:
Neil Abercrombie of Hawaii
Pete Stark from Northern California
Jeffery Lewis of Georgia
John Conyers Jr. of Chicago
Jim McDermott of Washington State
Charles B. Rangel of New York
Sorry I didn't add their districts or anything because... I didn't feel like it. These are all legitamate people and a legitamate bill that is going through congress right now with little to no opposition! We have to do something!

Luckily for me I am religious and somewhat off my rocker.
According to the Ten Commandments I am not allowed to murder anyone. Coincidentally, shooting foreigners with an automatic weapon or dropping bombs on villages full of peasants falls into that category. So, alas, serving a fascist leader is not an excuse when it comes to God's judgement on my immortal soul. Trying to convince me otherwise and then giving me a powerful weapon is a very bad idea. It could trigger a psychotic reaction resulting in the death of the highest official I could find access to. I've seen enough Vietnam war movies to know what happens when you suffer from 'a major malfunction'. For all anyone knows, it could cause me to take out my own batallion! I can best serve my country through prayer and meditation. Trying to provoke me to do violence against my fellow humans is just not a good idea.
