Bob sat up, dried blood still on his face, as he reached for his cell phone. After hitting the green button, that answered the phone, he placed the phone to his ear and attempted to say hello. His voice cracked and nothing came out, through the receiver he could hear her. He cleared his throat, and finally said hello.
"Hey." Amy responded. " I'm in the hospital."
"What happened?" Bob asked, feigning surprise.
"I was in an accident, it was pretty bad, the doctor said I was dead for like ten minutes."
"Oh my God, how bad are you hurt?" Bob said, as a slow throbbing pain began to build up in his skull.
"That's the thing, I'm perfectly fine. I have a small bruise on my forehead, and my neck is a little stiff, but the doctors are treating me like I'm in critical condition, they just let me outta the ICU a few hours ago." There was an awkward silence as Bob tried to think of something to say.
"When was the accident?" Bob asked attempting to determine how long he had been asleep. While struggling to maintain a steady voice through the intense migraine he was experiencing.
"It happened at like three o'clock AM yesterday." Bob was surprised at how long he had slept, but in reality he had expected to die. "I was wondering if you could come down and visit me?" Amy asked "You know, if your not too busy." She added sarcastically.
"Sure, I'll be down in an hour." another awkward silence "Seeya." Bob said, and hung up.
He slowly stumbled to his bathroom, opened the mirror and quickly swallowed three Advil. Chasing the pills down with water from the tap, he looked at himself over the rim of his glass. His face was still covered in blood, but the blood in his eyes seamed to have dissipated. The one centimeter long wound on the right side of his forehead didn't appear to be very eye-catching, at least from his perspective.
After showering, placing a small band-aid that failed to completely cover the wound on his forehead, and putting on some fresh clothes including a knit cap to cover his forehead, he felt refreshed. His headache was gone and he was ready to go see Amy. As he opened the door to leave his apartment, he looked down at the two newspapers on his door step. Picking them both up he noticed the headline of that day's newspaper involved the Washington County Hospital.
He brought the newspapers into his apartment and read the article about a man who incapacitated two security guards and broke a window in his attempt to leave the facility. The article stated that no one was able to identify the perpetrator and that all security camera footage was damaged from an intense electro magnetic disturbance.
Now satisfied that no one could identify him he left his apartment and made his way to the hospital. Parking a block away, he got out of his car and made his way to the entrance. The elderly women at the front desk looked up, from her magazine, at Bob and smiled. "Hi, I'm looking for Amy Velez."
The woman typed the name into her computer. "She's on the second floor, room twelve."
"Thanks." Bob said politely as he walked towards the elevators.
Upon reaching the second floor, he looked for signs pointing towards room twelve. Selecting the hallway to his left, he found room twelve. Taking a few deep breaths to calm himself, he walked in and saw Amy laying in a hospital bed watching TV. "How you doing?" he said in a low suave voice.
She looked at him and laughed at their inside joke. "I'm glad you came. My parents left about twenty minutes ago. I was starting to get lonely."
"Yea, so tell me what happened." Bob asked, as he sat down in the chair on the right side of her bed, despite the fact that he knew every single detail of what happened.
"I don't even remember that much. Me and Liz were heading home from the party and a deer ran out in front of us, she swerved to avoid it, and we ended up in a ditch." The truth was that Liz, Amy's sister, was high on Ecstacy and swerved off the road for no reason. Bob knew but he didn't care. Amy was just trying to keep her sister from going to jail. "The doctor said I was dead when they brought me in," She paused in disbelief of what she was saying "and then some guy came in and put his hands on me and I came back to life." She looked up from her nervous hands. "Isn't that fucked up?"
"Yea, that's weird." Bob said, avoiding eye contact. "Did they say who the guy was?"
"No one knew who he was." She started to stare at her hands again. "The nurses were telling me all kinds of crazy shit. Like, the guy had red eyes, like a demon or something." She looked up from her hands again and made direct eye contact with Bob. "And they said that the guy stabbed himself in the forehead with a scalpel." Bob began getting nervous as she looked at his covered forehead.
"So, how was the party?" Bob began to ask, in an attempt to change the subject.
"You know, I had a dream while I was out." She said, ignoring Bob's words. "I had a dream about you." She reached down and laid her hand in his. Bob looked away, keeping his wounded side facing away from her. "I was laying on a bed, and you were standing over me. I looked up at you, but you wouldn't look down at me." She slowly moved her hand up to the left side of his pale Irish face. Bob kept still, he didn't dare move. "When I called out your name you started to cry." Her voice spoke softly as it filled with emotion. Her thumb grazed the outer edge of his dark eyebrow, and her index finger wove it's way inside the dark green knit cap he was wearing, as her other fingers gently pressed the side of his neck. "When you finally looked down at me, you were crying tears...... of blood." She raised her hand slowly, raising the cap off of his head, and exposing the wound on the side of his forehead.
Bob looked straight at her, as she attempted to comprehend what she was seeing. She pulled her hand back still holding the cap. He looked at her deep blue eyes, and she looked away from his dark brown eyes. "Who are you?"
