Part 1: http://www.ubersite.com/m/44945
There was a heavy silence in the kitchen as her parents digested the news. A moment ago they had thought she wanted to talk about her college work, or money problems. They never thought this would happen, they thought she had been well educated about these kinds of things.
"You-you know we'll help you anyway we can, don't you?" Her mother managed to force out.
"Yeah, course we will love."
Tori looked down at the continuous splash-splashing of her tears on the table. Her mother handed her a piece of kitchen paper-towel and reached out to hold the other hand. This made it more difficult to wipe, fold the tissue over and blow her nose, but she didn't want to let go. This was the confirmation that they meant what they said.
They weren't angry at all, as she had expected them to be. They hugged her and kissed her cheeks at every opportunity that day, the concern clear on their faces for all to see. This was eating away at Tori, she couldn't bear to put her parents through this too, they truly didn't deserve it.
Her mum came into her bedroom the next morning as she was waking up and sat near her on the bed. She usually sat on the end of the bed when she wanted to talk about something.
"I couldn't sleep I'm so worried about you." The words tumbled out in a half-whisper and a few lonely tears dropped onto her cheek and made their way down to her chin.
"You know I'll help you? If you wanted, I could work part time and help you look after your baby." Tori tried to look into her mum's eyes but found they were looking at the floor. She felt her heart wrench again. How could she have been so stupid?
"I know mum." she managed to mumble. Did this mean she wanted her to have the baby? Tori caught herself: it isn't a baby yet, it's still just an indistinct bunch of cells.
Tori thought that leaving home to go back to the little terraced student-house would be hard, but when she came to get in her car, she found herself looking forward to being back with her friends. At least they understand more about me as a person, she thought to herself, starting the engine and waving out the window again. Her parents stood together on the front step to watch her go. She loved them so dearly she couldn't begin to explain it, but she would still prefer if they just went in and closed the door behind them.
The next few days passed so slowly, Tori felt that time had been stopped. Walking around at college, knowing what was going on inside her while everyone else passed in ignorance. She didn't want them to know, but she didn't want to be treated the same either. Thank goodness it was nearly the holidays, she could disappear and reappear without anything looking suspicious. There didn't have to be any questions.
"I think you should go to the gynocology ward at the hospital, just to be safe." The female doctor took the rubber-glove off her hand, wrapping it up inside itself, and dropped it into the special bin.
"I can't tell that anything's wrong so they'll need to do a scan to check it's not ectopic."
This just sounded like a blurb of noise to Tori. But David was listening, taking it all in. Tori was staring at the desk infront of her.
"I'll give them a call now so they'll be expecting you. Don't worry."
Don't worry? Why did everyone keep telling them that? How could they not worry? What did they expect them to do, put it out of their minds and get on with everything else?
Tori knew they only meant well, but didn't regret her thoughts.
David drove straight there and they followed the signs up to ward 16. A nurse directed them to a private room and gave instructions for Tori to undress from the waist down and get under a blanket on the bed.
She could stand the tests for blood pressure, blood suger, pulse and having a blood sample taken, but the internal examination was the most distressing thing she had ever experienced.
The female consultant was as kind as Tori could've wanted, but it didn't make her feel any better.
"Just pop your trousers back on and pop over to the room across the corridor." She left the room.
The cold gel made her jump a bit and then feel silly for doing so. She waited while the consultant set up the monitor and the hand-held scanner.
"I think we have a problem." She looked Tori straight in the eyes.
"You're much further along than we previusly thought."
