I like to watch.
People that is.
Or more specifically I like to watch people's legs as they pass by my window.
You see where I live is exactly seven steps down from the level of the road and pavement. There are also seven steps up from the road to what would normally be the ground floor above me.
I don't know why this building was built like this. Maybe this was a basement at one stage and then it was converted or maybe it was to get the maximum amount of accommodation within the bounds of some ancient building code.
As I said I don't know but to me those seven steps are very significant. You see I have always had a fascination with the number seven.
Seven Deadly Sins (that ones my favourite)
Seven Days of the Week
The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
The Seven Seas
Seven Falls in Colorado
I have been building this list for years now and it runs to several pages in my notebook. Of course it includes the seven steps down to my rooms.
Anyway I digress.
The windows of my rooms are quite small and are set almost level with the street. Some of you would say that my rooms are too dark but for me they are comfortable. I can sit here observing and unobserved.
I watch the legs go past and make up the lives of the people they are attached to.
There are 'my regulars' as I call them like the business man that lives two doors down.
He has specific suit and shoes combinations for each day of the week. Brown shoes, navy suit Monday and Friday. Black shoes, charcoal suit Tuesday and Thursday and on Wednesdays he wears loafers and slacks. I bet he plays golf on Wednesdays.
Other regulars are the woman that comes past every Wednesday. It is always at just after nine in the morning with her thick ankles, sensible flat shoes and stayups, pulling her shopping trolley. She always returns just after three in the afternoon. The shopping trolley never seems to have much in it.
My favourite is the young lady that lives up stairs. She has beautiful ankles and wears stilettos and stockings. She often comes home with a man but it never seems to be the same one. I hate them for being with her and they always leave after an hour or two and on their own.
Sometimes she stands outside my window for quite a while until she meets a man and then they go up the seven stairs above me.
Often when she is standing there waiting I look up and sometimes she is not wearing any knickers. Those days are my 'special days.'
At night I work as a security guard over at the old steel mill. It closed down years ago and I am the only one still there. Cartwright said that it is finally going to be knocked down and made into one of those horrible shopping centre things.
They won't need me there anymore but that doesn't worry me.
I am happy here seven steps down.
