They used to be friends.
When she started seeing him, she'd giggle as she told her about this new guy. How perfect her was, how amazing he was. How great his body was. Her friend would always listen, and laugh along with her. Happy that her friend finally had a real smile on her face.
When things were bad with him, her friend was there, consoling her and letting her cry on her shoulder. She just wanted the best for them.
When things did get better, they'd laugh and her friend would point out how she was always right.
When things got worse... and she ended up in hospital, her friend was there by her side every night. Praying she would be okay.
When her family found out why she was in hospital, they disowned her. She was tainted, dirty, unclean. Her friend was still there, promising that everything would be okay.
When there was nothing else to do, and she was living with him... things seemed like they were going to be okay. And her friend was happy for her. Because she was happy again, and vibrant, flashing around her new engagement ring.
When she got married, her friend was still there. Things looked okay.
Then when the marriage dissolved, her friend was still there. Still caring, still willing to listen.
For a little while, things seemed like they were getting better. Both of them were happy, dreaming up the next curveball life would throw at them. She had finished her degree, and was working a great new job. No one could bring her down now...
Then he came back. He promised he changed, he promised things were different. He gave her back her ring. She gave him back her heart.
Her friend didn't want to be a part of this anymore, but she couldn't just leave her.
Her friends started to disappear, one after another... day after day. Until only one was left who was willing to face up to the last confrontation.
Her friend didn't even recognise her anymore, she just wasn't the same person.
She thought she had found happiness with him.
The same happiness that he beat into her every night.
She wasn't even willing to talk with this girl. She just wouldn't understand, she didn't know him like she did.
She sent her away, and returned to her life.
She returned to the serenity she had "found" inside her head.
The same serenity that he showered her with every night, the same serenity that came with bruises and bloodied noses.
The serenity he gave her with his fists.
There it was, her happiness. She closed her eyes, and fell into her dreams. Hoping that this time, serenity was eternal.
