Yes, I realize there's no such thing as a SPW, so sue me. Let the -2s fly shlongy and koolmang...
I also realize Michelle Malkin is pretty far on the right-wing of the political spectrum, but I doubt that any mention of this will be made in the mainstream press.

And this brings up another issue Uberites. I'm interested in knowing what you think about not just homeschooling, but school choice in general. What do you think of the concept of charter schools? Why is it that across the country, on average, a fifth of public school teachers are sending their children to PRIVATE schools?

Please let me how you feel about these issues and any solutions there might be to fix things.

ss240 nailed it. I'm homeschooled, and at 17 I got my A+ from CompTIA. And I'm making good money as a computer repair tech... I'm not very religious, neither are my parents. Stop putting all homeschoolers in the 'christian zelot' box...

I was in public school my whole life; I even went to a state college. So I don't have the same perspective as ss. But my sister was in a program called "family school". She was taught by my mom in which she was proficient and went to a public school for subjects that my mom didn't know, like Spanish.
With this setup, my sister had plenty of social interaction, but there was still some manner of control over what she was learning.

Hey what's with all the homeschool bashing?
I was homeschooled for many years and came out completely unscathed. I was taught maybe the most important skill of all, how to learn on my own and not just repeat what was spoon-fed to me by a teacher. My mother taught me all the way through sophmore year of high school and did a fine job, no she wasn't a perfect teacher of every subject, but who is? She did the best she could and prepared me very well for the "real world" and I am now most of the way to an engineering degree. Sorry for the extra long post, but I cannot believe the scepticism of most people toward this form of education.

I grew up around some kids who were home schooled. Here's why I'm not a big fan. I truly question whether one parent can truly be an effective teacher of every single subject someone needs to know from kindergarten through 8th grade. I think those parents who are capable of such are few and far between. However, my biggest reason for never homeschooling my future children is a social one. Children who are homeschooled (in my experiences) are often socially inept and struggle horribly when they are thrust into high school or college. Imagine, it's just you and mommy in school for 10 years, then you have to go to high school and there's a hundred kids or more, or worse, to university, where you are one of thousands. Homeschoolers are the smelly kids we see rocking in the corner of the library.

I work in the public school system, and I have very strong feelings about homeschooling. I also attended private school for most of my education. I have been in several educational environments. I think that the homeschooling movement is ill advised in this day and age. We should be fixing the public education system (which is full of flaws) rather than abandoning the system that made us the great power we are today. A free education for all was a revolutionary concept for its time, and you know what? It still is.

I don't care that it's SP whatever. I do care about the issue. Does no one have anything constructive to say?

"The public school establishment hates homeschoolers. They've smeared the movement as a conspiracy of conservative Christian zealots. They've scoffed at homeschooled kids as social pariahs. They've painted homeschooling parents as uneducated and negligent."
And they're right.
