This is, however, not the only reason.
JPEG and GIF compression schemes both compress image files to approximately the same ratio, except for the fact that JPEG causes a significant loss in image quality (and unreadable text).
So why does anyone still use JPEG? I don't understand it. It's a useless format and should be retired.
On a side-note, the following proof of concept image may cause unexpected things to happen.
