Here are SOME examples of a facist country. Any of these ring a bell?

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism
Waving flags, Freedom Fries, etc.

2. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause
Hunting down Saddam Hussein for no apparent reason, rallying people to hate Iraq, etc.

3. Supremacy of the Military
Oh, we are so great, we don't listen to the U.N. even though it was our idea to establish it 50 years ago.

4. Controlled Mass Media
Talk shit about the government? Well, we can't have that, you're fired.

5. Obsession with National Security
"Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses."
'nuff said.

6. Religion and Government are Intertwined
"One nation under God..."

By the way, if you don't know what a fascism is, you are gay.

Last time I heard, more people voted for Al Gore than for George Bush in 2000. Last time I heard, more people were supporting Kerry this year than supported Gore in 2000.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm talking about the wackos, not rank and file democrats. Hell, I voted for Gore in 2000.

But, your figures are off a little bit. The last time I checked (last night) bush was ahead 3-4 points.

True. Not original enough to deserve a +2, but I'm giving it anyways because of some of the morons who can't seem to write anything more intelligent than "go fuck yourself with a [insert adjective] [insert noun]."

Unfortunatly my little friend, the "14 characterestics of facism" (ex: http://www.rense.com/general37/fascism.htm) are all over the web and have been circulating for quite a long time. So you're not really original here are you?

More evidence the US is becoming a facist country:

The Chicago Sun-Times today (9/24/2004) had an article on page 42 Link about how the US House of Representitives passed a bill attempting to limit the Supreme Court's ability to rule on whether the phrase "Under God" should be in the Pledge of Alliegence.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't this country's govenment designed so that the Supreme Court was supposed to tell the Congress what it could and couldn't do as far as the Constitution goes?

Between Bush possibly getting re-elected, this "national service" they want to force on us, and the conservative puritanical right wing trying to keep a crushing grip on power so they can get rich and be hypocrits, I'm ready to up and move to Canada!

I would give you a +2, but you only get a +1 cause you could have done so much more with this.

Post could have used some more content and maybe even a little justification of your supporting statements.

Bart - I have to go with Cigar on this one. You are starting to sound a little "fringe-group"y.

What are you all doing talking about fascism?!

This was quite clearly a post about FACISM - which of course, discrimination against people because you don't like their face.

Just remember folks, some people have funny noses, some people's eyes are too close together and others have eyebrows like big fuzzy-wuzzy caterpillars.

That is no reason to be a big mean facist!!

But hey, don't let logic get in the way of your right wing crusade.

I'm not saying I agree with all of this, but if Bush wins in November (for the first time), then I'm seriously thinking of going to Canada.

"Hunting down Saddam Hussein for no apparent reason"

..........

.........

OK. I think I see the problem. Here's what you gotta do:

Step 1: Relax your ass muscles, and prepare for romoval of the head.

Step 2: Slowly slide head out of ass. If problems arise, it is recommended you use a lubricant for safe removal.

Step 3: Step in front of moving bus.

there ya go....follow these three easy steps and you're on your way to making the world a better place.

While this is hardly the place to get into a long discussion, there are definitely plenty of similarities between the US and a fascist state.

While political opposition is technically allowed, the currently empowered Republican party has a tremendous ability to use the media to attack and smear opponents without any balance (verification of fact, questioning, etc.)

SCENARIO A:

Dan Rather and CBS news does a report on Bush's lack of National Guard service. Report is based on some original documents and some that are not originals, possibly fraudulent. Bush denies none of the information in the documents, but that the documents themselves are frauds. Right wing media launches off on how Dan Rather is trying to defraud the American people, how he should resign, how CBS should apologize, etc., completely IGNORING the fact that all the information described in all of these documents is true - Bush received preferential treatment to get into Texas National Guard, never went to Vietnam, skipped physicals, etc.

John Kerry goes to Vietnam, gets injured in combat, receives three purple hearts. Right wing media trumpets on about a group of veterans that attempts to attack Kerry.

Somehow, the resulting perception is that the two both lied about their military service, when the truth is that - even in the best case - Bush still dodged the draft and spent a couple years protecting Texas from communists while John Kerry was over in Vietnam.

SCENARIO B:

Bush administration uses fraudulent information about super secret "weapons of mass destruction" and Saddam Hussein's ability to "attack the US at a moment's notice" in order to launch the first preemptive strike in modern American history. A year and a half later, a thousand American deaths later, no weapons later, prison scandals and restatements of facts, and the right wing media still trumpets Bush's cause of protecting the US from terrorism, even though the cause for the war has flip-flopped from terrorism to weapons of mass destruction to tyranny to abuse of minorities.

The scariest part of the whole thing is that even with all of the facts out, about 50% of the people would still vote for Bush because he sent them a fucking $200 check.

stringent socioeconomic controls....

suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship....

Oppressive, dictatorial control....

So the FCC fining CBS for Janet Jackson's breast proves it. The USA government is fascist. I had my family killed when they made anti-Iraq war statements, too.

Oh yeah...ignore that thing called "election day" coming up on November 2nd too....

Interesting points, don't think you're correct though but at least you've thought about it a bit.

Fascism
noun [U]
a political system based on a very powerful leader, state control and extreme pride in country and race, and in which political opposition is not allowed

With it's many checks and balances you could argue that the President is not a 'very powerful leader'.

However, if you substitute the ideology of 'Capitalism' for the 'President' you may have yourself your school essay right there.

McCarthyism can be argued as being the part where political opposition is not allowed. But that was over a long time ago.

Also, most countries have (or should have) extreme pride in their country anyway, doesn't mean they're fascist.

Can't gve this a +2 but take a point to offset the barrage of -2's you'll get.
