Bush will edge out Kerry in tomorrow's debate.

Not because he's a smarter, more qualified, or a better speaker, but rather because he will have his tried-and-(not)true list of simple, scripted answers that he will repeat over and over and over and over and over and over. And over. The same answers he's been dishing out for months.

If he doesn't deviate from those answers (however irrelevant they are to the questions), he should prevail.

Kerry has much more to accomplish.

He has to

- counter the Bush team's "flip-flopping" attacks,
- try to get some sort of vision and message across,
- attempt to get Bush off track/off script (so he will get confused and start mumbling incoherently)

and -- all the while -- he needs to look relaxed, casual, and act like a regular guy.

That's quite an undertaking.

Don't get me wrong. I hate Bush. It's not ordinary hate either ... it's REAL HATE like the way I hate Britney Spears. He's an idiot, he has surrounded himself with corrupt advisors, he's made too many bad decisions, and he needs to be fired. Would you let him run your company .. or manage your bank account? Hell ... would you let him drive your car?

"Stay the course." "I choose to protect America." "America is safer." "The economy is getting better." "I believe in the sanctity of marriage." "Saddam was evil." "I prayed to God, and the Lord told me ..."

If he can repeat those phrases a few dozen times each ... and keep that goobery smile while he's doing it ... American will eat it up.

Advantage: Bush

God help us ....

No, I would not let him drive my car. I would however, let him ride my Harley. Dumbass would probably wrap himself around a tree. Then I write it off as a sacrifice for the good of my country.

I love it when I'm wrong.

Kerry did a little better than I expected, and Bush choked ... and made all the muffled stuttering strangling sounds that go along with it.

That, and Kerry doesn't have a platform. Then he'll talk about numbers and shit. They aren't going to show the reactions of the candidates though, because Al Gore was such a huffy bitch last time.

Yeah ... at least Gore losing it made that debate interesting. I'm afraid this one could be rather boring ... perhaps I should drink coffee instead of vodka (my usual debate-watching-elixir of choice)

Regardless of whether or not he was a legacy, he still went there, and he still graduated. Hypothetical here: Some kid you teach gets into Yale. Do you assume that he will get a better education there than he would elsewhere or not? I'm guessing you do...

Actually no I dont. I know that new books and quality instructors count, but they are not the deciding factor. Student motivation is. You can surround a student with all the 'stuff' in the world but if he or she is not motivated and/or intellectually curious he or she will remain as dumb as a post.

Another factor is that a student will not retain the given material as well if he or she is spoon fed. If you obtain the information yourself you will be much more likely to put the information to use. Thats why it is so disturbing to me that GWB doesnt read the newspaper, it demonstates that he is to lazy and does not have any desire to obtain new information and process it on his own. As a professional educator it says to me that Bush is either a)happy in his insular world view or unwilling to exert himself. Both choices are not qualities that you want in a man leading the free world.

Yet, tens of millions think (haha .. I assumed they think) he's a great president. 50,000 people rallied for him in Ohio yesterday. Fifty freakin thousand. That's a whole of misinformed/misguided/missingafewbraincells voters in one location.

I live within a few miles of where the rally took place. Most of the people I know that went don't necessarily like Bush, they just wanted to see the president. This may be obvious, but I just thought I'd point this out.

You don't have to be born with a silver spoon to be an intellectual. Quite the contrary, I rather thing that struggle makes you smarter - like a fat house cat versus an alley cat. Not that either of these two are down with the man.

I am first and foremost a populist. This does not mean that I believe that the country should be placed in the hands of Joe 6-Pack down at the Ford plant. I think that Joe 6-Pack should certainly receive the highest caliber education possible and I think he should be up on the issues in order to make informed choices, but no I don't think that Joe 6-Pack should be the leader of the free world.

Would you let Joe 6-Pack perform your open heart surgery?

By "intellectual" I mean has the capacity of abstract thought and has the vision to understand the consequences and possible scenarios of his actions.

Whether you were for or against the war on Iraq, you have to admit that huge mistakes were made. It was arrogant hubris to think that the people would welcome us with candy and flowers. There is no exit strategy and the drain on our resources is astonishing. Just imagine what that same amount of money could have done elsewhere. Fuck prescription drug coverage, for what we're going to end up spending in Iraq we could have provided free healthcare to every single US citizen.

"So, it is really irrelevant HOW he got in. What matters is he was educated there."

Nope, just getting in is what separates the Ivies from the public universities, and Bush didn't get in because he was a smart kid. Once you actually get into an Ivy league school it isn't really any harder to graduate than anywhere else. In fact, with the rampant run of grade inflation among the Ivy league schools, you could make a case that it is easier to graduate from Harvard with a high GPA than it is at some small out of the way liberal arts college. Do Ivy league schools tend to produce smarter and generally more qualified persons? Well yeah, but I beleive it has more to do with the quality students going in due to strict admissions standards than the Universities themselves.

Because the NEWSPAPERS have more or better information that what he's getting straight from the sources the papers wish they could get a quote from? Seriously, tell me why the Chief Executive needs to read the New York Post. For him its got to be like reading the Weekly World News. Do you really think the isn't getting the straight dope? I think that's a little naive.

Regardless of whether or not he was a legacy, he still went there, and he still graduated. Hypothetical here: Some kid you teach gets into Yale. Do you assume that he will get a better education there than he would elsewhere or not? I'm guessing you do. Quality of instructors, facilities, etc all contribute to the superiority of the educational experience. Sure, you could say that it doesn't matter where you go to school, your education is in your own hands. There have been brilliant people who have gone to less stellar schools and who have contributed mightily. I would argue that this is the exception rather than the rule. So, it is really irrelevant HOW he got in. What matters is he was educated there.

I would think.

No Queenie, we're just saying the President should be intellectually curious enough to pick up a newspaper now and then.
-Or-
Or the President should be more than a C student. And dont bullshit me about Yale, he was a legacy pure and simple.

Angst - If you are familiar with Potatomanjack's predictions for the future based on the movie Predator (somehow both Jesse Ventura and Schwarzenager become governors?) then you know that movies can tell the future. In the movie Demolition Man, there is a line Sandra Bullocks gives talking about a Constitutional Amendment that was passed so that Schwarzeneger can become President.

Don't make jokes. It could happen. Stranger things already have.

On a side note, all of you claiming that the President should be an "intellectual" . . . uh:
1)how does that fit in with ideas that would be AGAINST an electoral college. Because I'm sure you don't favor that.

2) I'm also assuming that you are all down with the "common man." Well, is your "common man" an intellectual? Joe six-pack putting Fords together in Detroit is an intellectual? Or are you instead arguing for the inherent superiority of the aristocracy?

Seriously shitfuck, I think he may finally surpass Harding as the worst president ever. I would love to see how this all goes down in 100 years. It sounds like something out of a bad novel, starting a war on false pretenses, massive tax cuts that overwhelmingly favor the rich and bankrupt the country, unconscionable and irreparable damage to the environment, and this God stuff. When in the hell did the US become a theocracy?

My head hurts now. I need to go break something.

Oh and do not under any circumstances even wish him any harm. You would only be cursing us all with Dick.

"History will look back at this guy and laugh."

===================

Amen! Unless Arnold Schwarzenegger somehow manages to change the constitution and become president sometime in the future, History will consider George W. Bush the worst president of this century.

Can you imagine how our grandchildren (ugh .. god forbid I procreate!) will look back on us for electing him as president?? "Dude, those old people were like really fuckin' stupid back then."

Yet, tens of millions think (haha .. I assumed they think) he's a great president. 50,000 people rallied for him in Ohio yesterday. Fifty freakin thousand. That's a whole of misinformed/misguided/missingafewbraincells voters in one location.

I dispise George so much that I would trade my life for his in a second.

If he wants to be the leader of the free world, shouldn't the citizens of the free world get to vote on it? I agree strongly with that 'I believe the President should be an intellectual...' line, 'appearently half of America disagrees.'

I'm one of about three billion people out there living outside of the US with my fingers crossed that Bush either gets assassinated or just loses. Either way, he's got to go--he's the worst thing to happen to America and the rest of the world.

History will look back at this guy and laugh.

I'm afraid that I agree. The problem is that the issues are too complex to boil down to a "vote Dubbya or die" tag line and Kerry is an intellectual. Personally, I think that the President of the United States should be an intellectual, but apparently roughly half of the country disagrees.

Unfortunately, few people truly understand formal debate so Bush will get away with untold amounts of hyperbole and flat out bullshit.

What else are you going to do though?

My advice to Kerry, don't look at your watch.

I would like to see Kerry call Bush on this flip flop issue. I mean come on, first Bush is dead set against nation building, now he's all for it. He was against the 9/11 Commission now he's all for it. That's not flip flopping? What the fuck does he mean by flip flopping then?

I'm tense about this debate. I really think it's a make or break for Kerry. Just look what the Dean Scream did to Howard Dean's chances.

If Bush wins, I'm going to become an alcoholic. It's the only answer.
