Tommy and Melissa had been married for fifteen years. There were no children, and they had everything they had ever wanted. Nice house in an affluent neighborhood. Expensive automobiles. His a Hummer H2, hers a Jaguar XK. He ran his own Real Estate business which had turned out to be extremely successful. She was the president of a very large and quite well known cosmetics company. They vacationed in Costa Rica twice a year at a private island owned by a very close friend and they hobnobbed with the rich and famous at places like Cannes and Monaco.
They had everything a man and woman could possibly want.
"Come a little bit closer
Hear what I have to say
Just like children sleepin'
We could dream this night away."
Tommy and Melissa would lay side by side each night. They would have small talk about each others business interests. Sometimes they would reach out for each other, but those times had become few and far between. Most of the time they would chit chat for a few moments and turn from each other to sleep. They would both lie there, back to back, worrying their own private worries, each thinking that the other was in blissful, relaxing slumber.
"But there's a full moon risin'
Let's go dancin' in the light
We know where the music's playin'
Let's go out and feel the night."
Tommy would lay next to her for hours, his past, present, and future running through his head like a full length feature film. He would think back to the days of college, hanging out with his buddies. Fred, Sam, Johnny. Fred was the funny one, always willing to take a fall for a joke. Sam, always the ladykiller seemed to hook up with a different chick almost nightly. Johnny, the serious one, always on the lookout for opportunity and success. He had spoken to them sporadically over the last fifteen years. He would lie in bed and mull over his present situation realizing how much he missed them. How much he missed that lifestyle. How very badly he needed friends like them now, but it seemed that it was too late and his life was very much different. Then his thoughts would turn to Melissa.
"Because I'm still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I'm still in love with you
On this harvest moon."
Melissa would also lie there next to Tommy, contemplating her life and where it was going. On the back edge of 40, she felt as if she were on a downhill run on the far side of her life. Her friends always told her how much they envied her lifestyle, but she wasn't buying it. Sure, she had a prestigious job and many wonderful material possessions, but that wasn't all there was to life. She had always regretted not having children. Whenever she was driving by the park, she would see the young mothers walking their strollers. She would see the daughters and sons hugging their mommy's knees, looking up with love in their eyes. She was jealous of that love. Jealous of those smiles. She would often lie there and wonder what unconditional love felt like. She often wondered how different her life would be if but for a child.
"When we were strangers
I watched you from afar
When we were lovers
I loved you with all my heart."
They saw each other from across a crowded dance floor. She was immediately attracted to his height. He was taller than most of the guys around him and was what her mother would have referred to as a "tall, cool drink of water". She casually started to make her way over to him by way of the bar, She knew that she had his attention and she wasn't going to let the opportunity slip by.
He was attracted to her instantaneously. He liked everything about her look. The way she sounded when she laughed. The way the right side of her mouth went up just a little higher than the left side when she smiled. The way she wore four earrings in her left ear and three in her right. He never asked her about that, but he had assumed that she had a reason for it. She seemed to have a reason for everything. She was in control of her life. He was very turned on by that also.
That was sixteen years ago. Their eyes met at the outset of what would be a very passionate and wild evening. Exactly a year later, they were married.
"But now it's gettin' late
And the moon is climbin' high
I want to celebrate
See it shinin' in your eye."
There were nights when both Tommy and Melissa had experienced total sleeplessness but neither was aware of it. They would play their toss and turn games, always pretending to be asleep, never wanting to wake the other, deep in thought about days gone by, what ifs, and how comes. One night they had actually both turned at the same time and hit forehead to forehead right smack dab in the middle of the elaborate king size bed. As it happened, they both opened their eyes. Exchanging looks of fury, they both realized what was happening; what had been happening. They searched each others eyes with intensity. No words were spoken this night, no curses were whispered, no awkward glances were avoided. They just looked deeply at each other for what seemed like an eternity. During this eternity, bridges were mended. Motivations were uncovered. Jealousy was revealed. Envy was laid asunder. Insecurity was exposed. The gaze was so naked, so brutally full of emotion that both of them suddenly turned away from each other as though embarrassed by the openness and raw emotion that they were both witnessing.
After a moment, they both turned towards each other. "I'm sorry" he said to her, his sincerity laid bare in front of her, waiting for and expecting her scrutiny. "I am as well" she replied, a lone tear making its way down her left cheek and disappearing into her satin pillowcase. He saw reflected in her tears, the light of a full moon coming in from the bedroom window. He got up and opened the drapes fully to reveal the largest, most beautiful sight that the two of them had ever witnessed. The moon seemed to fill up the window, to fill up their eyes; their souls.
They made love that night for real. It was as real and spontaneous as when they met sixteen years earlier. They both had realized in one split second, one incredibly minute moment of time, that the last fifteen years, or a good portion of it was wasted on other things. Instead of fanning the flames of their desire, they had ended up running from it's heat. That night they had realized that the flame was still there, smouldering under years of apathy towards a routine relationship.
It had all changed with a bump on the head in the middle of the night, and a moon that was as full as their love could ever be.
"Because I'm still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I'm still in love with you
On this harvest moon."

It's a good thing, for you, that I choose not to out-write you. For I would do it, and do it well.

Jesus you can write. (A little mutual laughter at the forehead bump would have been fun, but I understand their distance, they had forgotten how to laugh.) +10

a lone tear making its way down her left cheek """
Why is it always a LONE tear? Has anyone actually ever seen a LONE tear?
I know cliches become cliches for a reason but I think we should all agree to let this one die.
Made me smile/smirk.

"Anyhow... I'd say that the DoaM guy has lots and lots of lives. Far too many, actually."
Funny thing, how the reader interprets the subject. Interesting actually.

Sure, he has no NEED to... But I think that all of us have, at one time or another, wanted to begin maiming innocent victims. Right? Right?

Anyhow... I'd say that the DoaM guy has lots and lots of lives. Far too many, actually.

Sad, but comforting too, hopeless but full of hope. Loved it.
Glad you liked it Loren. I always look forward to your reviews. I know you'll tell me when I begin to suck.

Evocative post.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA. This is funny. My madman has no life. This guy has a great life. He has no need to eat children or play legos with real body parts.

Neil Young, another scary coincidence. Must be a generational thing.

"Baby I remember...
all the things you taught me.
I learned how to laugh and I learned how to cry.
I learned how to love and I learned how to lie."
words by N.D.
It's rare that my emotions are so easily plundered. Somehow Mike you have managed, again, to pierce my heart and flay open my soul, claiming them for your very own.
Damn if you didn't make me FEEL. How could you?
Michelle
Wow. Really? :)
Nice to see you again Michelle. What? Do you like just pop up every now and then, or am I just missing you most of the time?
