With the recent topic of the imminent mortality of certain uberusers (You'll be sorely missed, Gibberish), a thought occurred to me.
Yes, it would be a tragedy if an uberuser died.
And a loss of one of the great writers on this site would hit us like a tonne of bricks.
But what if Bart died?
Seriously, what would be Ubersite's future?
Would it fade into obscurity, with it's users slowly departing to other forums and sites?
Would another user somehow manage to take Bart's place? Would this be even legally possible?
Has Ubersite been written into Bart's will?
"I bequeath all my worldly possessions to goats, except for Ubersite - That will be run by my good friend <insert name here>."
Would all the posts (great and crap) just float around in the electronic highway that is the internet, to be found occasionally by a bored web surfer?
It would be nice to know that Ubersite would be around, well, forever.
Past our deaths and beyond.

Seriously though, Bart, have you considered a contingency plan, someone to whom you could hand over control of the site who wouldn't run it into the ground?
I think you're right though. It would be too tempting for someone to just exert too much control and want to exploit it. You do a great job in that respect.

I agree with you whole heartedly...thats why I try to get to North Shore at least once a week...incoming sets being the deciding factor. If its flat, then I go flat......and cold with hockey....hiking, biking, you name it...I do do it...next challenge is parasailing I think...Outside is good.

I think Hidden101 would be the most likely choice by most...he seems to have a good balance of absurdity and kindness mixed in with a wit that has the velvet taste of tangent.

I agree with you on that overall reply, Bart. I like the way you've sat your ass at the top of the URL hill and pushed that big mainstream killing boulder down the hill of good taste, infamy and cerebral thundering, and watched it all unfold. Some things run so much better on autopilot. Uber seems to be one of those vehicles. I'm glad I tripped unto this site. I also loathe that same fact....but after all........Ubersite is what I make of it. Therein lies the pure genius of it all.

It would really suck if I died.
Ubersite would probably continue running for a week or two after I died without any intervention. The first problem that would come up is that the server's hard drive would run out of space. There are backups of the ubersite database and various system log files that take up a ridiculous amount of disk space.
The site would be very different if I wasn't the one ultimately in charge. Everybody wants to exert too much control. I'm sure there would be a lot more banning, censoring, and bizarre rules than there are in place now. Also, there would probably be banner ads/adwords and a crappy cafepress store.

No offense intended Spookster...I was just linkwhoring. I am suprised I even remembered that little discussion.
It is a valid question though...what would happen to übersite? Good luck getting anything out of Bart. He doesn't say much round here that I've seen...of course I try to stray off the beaten path from time to time post-wise, so I am probably just missing him.

Bart's posts are mostly shit, I'd rather have Method take over. Or PolyJ or Ohlookasquirell or Q or Koolmang. Just about anybody could do a "better" (ie: more entertaining/interesting) job than Bart. But he did an okay job building what we have here.....

I don't think many could fill bart's shoes in all honesty I mean he's THE MAN despite whatever the hell people think. I think only a few users could actually step up and hold ubersite together, those users being of course RAZOR or someone on the list of course who is not a complete idiot or does not hit-whore.
