I have to say, tho the graphics suck compared to todays standards, the nes was the best system ever. Most of its games were fun, as they couldnt make good graphics for it, so they had no choice but to make them fun to play, which they do not do in todays games. Anyway here is a list of the ones i remember being the greatest.
Excitebike
Any mario game
metroid
off road!
dragon warrior
top gun
contra
bubble bobble
ice hockey
ninja gaiden
double dragon
battle toads
there were so many more, but i cant remember them right now

another one just came to me, BASE WARS. that was a great game, you had a baseball team made up of different robots and you'd battle at the bases. like if you got tagged at 2nd base, you'd fight and if you won then you'd be safe and if you lost then you'd win. you could also buy weapons and armour for your guys too. such a great game

You're right, i should be fired for not remembering zelda or final fantasy. i played zelda for hours. especially the second one.
zanac was a great game too, a little spaceship that destroyed stuff.

What about Bionic Commando?!
Or The Adventures of Lolo?
And...
The Guardian Legend? These were the kick-assest games.

wow - I'm just remembering Dragon Warrior.
I got Dragon Warrior for free with my subscription to Nintendo Power one year - I was hooked on that game. It was the only RPG I ever played...and I beat it... I spent so much time juicing up my armor, weapons and hit points that the final boss (the Red Dragon, was it?) was no match for me. In fact, I'm pretty sure I killed him in 2 shots and he only got one mediocre shot in on me...
that game ruled

Ahh man, I hated Mario Cart. Well, I loved playing it, but I got so pissed off at it. FUcking Yoshi, indeed. I hate that fucking lizard.

They would never have stood up to Mario Cart induced rages like the SNES controller which had a superb wall bouncing quality.
so true. so true. nothing worse than yoshi coming up behind you at mach 3 on the last lap. fucking yoshi.

The Sega Master II system has Alex Kidd and The Enchanted <something?> built in. Enough said.
The only trouble with the early consoles was that the control pads were the same size and shape as an ice-cream wafer and just as fragile.

Zandy - I hear you on Rygar. That game ruled!
Zelda, Excitebike, Punch-Out, Super Mario Bros, Contra, . . .
Oh man were they good. Wish I wouldn't have sold my NES now.

Although I remember being pissed off at bubble bobble because you could only get the TRUE ending beating it with both characters, after having already gone through the trouble of getting to that warp in level 99. But it was still fun

i had a sega master system instead.
that kicked the NES arse.
The mega drive (saturn?? in US) was better than the SNES as well.
Except for Mario3. I have that on GB Advance now and it still rules all.

there are so many good Nintendo games. and it's true- the graphics were shitty, but the games were still wicked fun. i agree that it's the best console ever. i'm not a console guy because a PC is always better in my opinion because of it's versatility (and can play all the console games and will run them smoother), but the NES rules.

-1 for forgetting Zelda. to make a post about great NES games and not include Zelda is ridiculous.
others you missed:
River City Ransom
MegaMan
Bad News Baseball and Little League Baseball
and a shitpile more.

iloveamerica: I've heard people say they can KO Tyson in round one, but the best I've been able to do is a TKO at 2:00 of round 2.

Blitzkreig: One exception to my previous post is Mike Tyson's Punchout. Best game on any platform ever.
I've never been able to beat Tyson on an emulator, but he's a piece of cake on the NES. Dig up a cartridge somewhere.

punchout was great, the only way i've seen someone beat him without cheating is to try to last all 3 rounds and hope they vote you a winner.

But you forgot Punchout!
I still play the emulator version about once a week. That or Contra. I still can't beat Mike Tyson, either.

I can't bring myself to rate this positively. Maybe if you wrote why the games ruled, it would be better. ie:
Ninja Turtles for NES was the shit because you could switch between all four turtles and have an over head as well as a side scrolling adventure. Along with getting neat secondary weapons like the boomerang, you could pause the game and switch turtles after you threw some, and give some to a turtle that didn't have one. Driving the Turtle Van around town ruining The Clans shit with rockets was also the epitome of ass kickery. I submit that this game is far superior than any other Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game produced.

The NES was a good system, but not even close to being the best. It wasn't even the best of its generation. The Sega Master System was tons better, though it couldn't compete with Nintendo's unfair business practices.

Don't forget Blades of Steel, and my uber favourite, World Cup Soccer '98 (or was it '96, or something earlier... :P )

Bayou Billy was the best. It had 3 modes. You could walk around fighting alligators, or shooting mode where you shoot guys hiding behind trees, or drive on a dirt road and destroy stuff, or drive on a pathed road to a big city and helicopters attack you.
