I was dreaming of birth. I could feel myself being pulled down the tunnel away from the light when suddenly I awoke, late for work, to the sound of 'Sleepwalkers' by Santo and Johnny. There was a crow flying around in my bedroom. He was bouncing off the walls as he flapped wildly, stopping intermittently on a statue of Shiva - staring and breathing...

I looked at the clock and it was 9:11. I got up and grabbed my pants off the baby crib and put them on both legs at once. Reaching in my pockets I found a handful of Caraway spice. I threw it over my shoulder onto the windowsill to lure the bird out. He ate the seed and on he flew into the dreary autumn sky...

I hopped into my car and slammed the door. My rearview mirror fell off onto my floorboard. I proceeded down the road...

A Hearse appeared around the bend ahead of me followed by the rest of the funeral cortege. It pulled over to the side of the road as I passed. I counted the cars - there were seven. On the sidewalk, children stood pointing and laughing as on I drove...

I stopped at a filling station and purchased a quart of oil, an apple, and a bottle of milk; the apple was rotten and the milk was sour, but I was too late to turn back. In a field to my left I saw a herd of cattle running in fear of something unseen...

Dark clouds followed me as I passed on through the countryside. This was a shortcut I'd always heard about but never taken. On the side of the road lay a dead horse - its ribs were showing through its skin as the road grew narrower. Ahead in the distance I saw a lone oak tree standing in the middle of a great field as a black cat dodged in front of me. My rear view mirror was gone, but I was pretty sure I had killed it. I could not stop to see...

Six miles of narrow gravel and dirt roads - finally I came upon a crossroads. An old black man was standing there with a banjo in his hands and a monkey on his shoulder. I asked him which way to Paradise. He said nothing, pointed, and off I sped...

Arriving at my destination I ran inside. A painter was painting the lintel black as I passed - his ladder was facing North and South...

I sped up the stairs - there were thirteen in all... I sat in my chair and lit a smoke. A one-armed clown came in and spoke - I went into a dream...

I was dreaming of death. I could feel myself being pulled down the tunnel away from the darkness when suddenly I awoke, late for work, to the sound of flapping and crashing and the sound of "Walkin' On Sunshine" by Katrina & The Waves. Outside my window a dove flapped, wanting to get in...

I used to think that you were a colossal pain in the neck. Now I have a much lower opinion of you.

Why, thanks Silvr. I told you you didn't have to read it.

Good work. Strangely harmonic in its reading.

i remember a song that goes,

"i tend to laugh when black cats cross my path
break mirrors in half just to test the aftermath."

i forgot who sings it, but this reminded me of that

I didn't get into the Moody Blues until later. I did have an A-Ha tape.

Taaaaake oooooon meeeee (take! on! me!)
Taaaaake meeeeee ooooon (take! on! me!)
I'll beee something
Something something eeeeee!

Okay, I never got the words. That Dead or Alive song about the record was on my mix CD too.

Colon, close parenthesis!

Some of my 80s favs are "In Your Wildest Dreams" by The Moody Blues, "Take on Me" by A-HA!, "Land of Confusion" by Genesis. The Cars were great too...and that song "You spin me right round baby right round like a record baby right round round round" whatever its name was.

As of "Walkin' on Sunshine" I hate that song too; the contrast is what I was going for, but you probably knew that.

By the way, I hate that song. This hatred was intensified by the 14 times I heard it while driving to California, listening to an 80s mix my sister made for me. I'd rock through "Dance Hall Days" and "Safety Dance" and "Shout" and the rest, only to arrive at that infernal song, the last one on the CD. I couldn't figure how to skip CDs (not my car), so I had to listen to it every time. Goddamn that song, its writer, that chick who sings it and you for making me remember.

I took a course in fairy tales in college, with a huge section about archetypes. I think we'd have a field day with this one.
