Is it just me or is there a little black book that producers go by when they try to come up with a music video? Some things I've noticed:
Rap / Hip Hop
- Videos must include cars that are either worth more than $40k or was made somewhere before 1990 (Mercades-Benz a constant favorite)
- Usually contains more than one scantly-clad female
- May include a group of people dancing/nodding along
- Gold chains mandatory
Pop
- Usually involves one or more 'dance scenes'
- For those I-broke-up-with-my-girlfriend videos, artist(s) need to cry/look close to crying (or at least fake it)
- Involves a few moments of an artist's face taking up the entire TV screen
Rock / Bands
- Majority of video shows the band playing their various instruments
- Several scenes of singer trying to burst a few blood veins while singing the bridge
- May include a group of paid extras to fill in for a concert scene or video may take place at a crowded club
I know this is a *very* general list, but come on, can't anyone get a little more original? Or at least come up with a video that rivals the production costs of a cheap movie. Chinese videos tend to be the same; love songs show the artist being sorrowful, 'lively' music involves the artist dancing in front of a club scene or involve a weird background. So far I think it's the Japanese who can come up with some better videos. Check Ayumi Hamasaki's "Endless Sorrow", Utada Hikaru's "Wait and See", Gackt's "Mizerable" or L'Arc~en~Ciel's "Forbidden Lover" if you want an idea.

I also think that any videos depicting a party/rave/dance should involve 'special effects' - both by camera angles and what the party SHOULD look like after whatever drug was present.
Rap videos damn near piss me off. They give the idea that scantly-clad women like to be felt up by complete strangers. Let's see someone finding one of those anywhere in a city.

You missed a few things
Rap/Hip Hop
- At least one slow motion to exentuate either money or women.
Pop
- at least one dance move mimicking a lyric. (Example-played with your heart)
Rock
- Randomly inserted frame of a hot chick.
- At some point for no apparent reason the focus comes out and then back in I guess for artistic vision.

What's the point of making the video at all then? Unless of course you wanna do it the Aguilera way or the Spears way and make it into a strip show. You know it's not about the music anymore when you see someone watching the video with mute on.
I understand what you mean by the video representing the song, but the only examples I can see are mostly like Eminem's "Way I Am" or Ashanti's "Foolish". From rap songs, I get the idea that they just carjacked someone. From pop songs ... I can't tell them apart anymore (then again, who can?). Rock songs are understandable. Sad to say Nickelback's "Too Bad" was one of the better videos I've seen.
I think the fans are more to blame than the industry itself. People are actually encouraging lower standards when they support the crap companies throw out. Doesn't anyone ever feel disappointed when a half decent song comes with a crappy ass video? Or are people starting to use their TVs as radios - leave it on to hear the music but walk off to do something (meaningful?) in another room.
While I'm on the subject, I recommend a Korean video - "Because I'm a Girl" by Kiss. Very touching, although I have no idea what the song is about (no, I'm not even sure if the title says anything about the song).

The videos often are supposed to convey what they song is about, right?
Rap songs are mostly about money and "bling bling" so thats what they show.
Pop songs are about mindless nothing/shit so that's what they show.
Rock is about the music a bit more, so there are more showings of them on stage and shit..
mTV(small m, big TV)Videos are shit.. mTV all together is shit. Much Music is half decent. VH1 is turning to shit(mTV influence is taking over), soon we will see a VH2, i'm sure.
it's all part of the most corrupt industry in existance. THE MUSIC INDUSTRY.
if they can easily churn out 50 videos that are exactly the same and still make money.. why would they care about being original?
