Sitting on the beach with the armed men, we watched and waited for the rest of the competitors to come in. Each time I tried to speak, ask what was going on, or demand to be taken back to the mainland the host of the show, Jeff, would point his weapon at me and shake his head. After unsuccessfully trying to talk to the crew four times, I gave up and sat in silence. The next contestant was coming in now and it didn't look too promising.
Barb was already starting to slow her aircraft down even though she was still out over the water. We were given explicit explanations as to why it's imperative to maintain your speed until you're right down to the ground ready to land. Because of the high lift design of the wings, letting up on airspeed causes the craft's nose to dive, hard.
Barb's plane did just that, it dove straight to the water coming up short of the beach by about ten yards. The impact looked awful, the sound of such a small vehicle hitting the water much louder then one would have expected. I stood, ready to help Barb to shore, or to help her out of the craft but was immediately instructed to sit down by that smarmy bastard Bill Parker, the producer of the show. Neither of us liked each other and we both knew it. When we met at my interview we immediately clashed. I got on great with Jeff and that intern guy, but Bill was an ass. I told him to fuck off and started to make for the water when I heard a gunshot ringing in my ears and saw sand poof up in front of me. I turned around and was again told to sit as he raised his gun to point it at me. So I sat and watched.
Barb surfaced then, she had watered down blood running from a cut on her face and was thrashing wildly in the water. I turned to the crew filming all of this and asked them why they wouldn't help, why wasn't I allowed to help. Jeff looked at me briefly and said: "she's got to make it on her own." And she did, but I know now she would later wish she hadn't.
Barb pulled herself out of the water screaming at the crew: "What the fuck! You dumb asses could have helped me, fuck! What's your prob....". Bill fired his weapon again instantly grabbing Barb's attention. "What is going on?" Barb moans.
Jeff quietly tells her to sit down and shut up. Barb can't though; she saw the two in the water and now this? It's too much. She screams at them " get me off this island now! You'll be hearing from my lawyer! Take me now! Bill grabs her by the arm and reissues the command "sit down, shut up" adding "or you'll really have something to scream about" as he placed the barrel of his gun in the middle of her stomach.
So we sat together with the crew standing over us. The next three pilots, Randy, Gina, and Paulette all make the landing successfully. Following Paulette is Brianna, the "grandmother" of the group. She impressed me when we met at flight school, for an old lady she was very fit and definitely sharp but as she neared the landing she panicked. She started slowing down while still quite high above the shore, the nose of her little plane dove before the rest of the craft followed. A large plume of sand followed by bits of airplane and smoke went up as the aircraft drove nose first into the sand. Brianna didn't walk away from that one, her neck was broken on impact and she died shortly after.
Denny was close behind Brianna and watched as she dove into the beach. He saw the crash and decided that he would bring his craft down in the water. He brought it in just like he was going to land on shore and pulled the nose up just before hitting the water, the ultra light skimmed the surface briefly before starting to sink as it lost momentum. Denny calmly unbuckled his harness and swam to shore.
Five more pilots, Tim, Todd, Chris, Rachel, and Amy, made the landing with varying degrees of success. The gun wielding crew greeted each, whether they screamed, yelled, or fought they were ultimately subdued and made to sit with the rest of us. We watched as the last plane we saw that day neared the island. Jill was by far the least confident when it came to flying the ultra lights. She was very nervous and you could tell, watching the little plane weaving and bucking through the air. Jill lined up for the landing but came in too high, going just over our heads to crash into the tree line behind us. Again, we wanted to go to her to help her but were immediately forced to sit. So we watched and waited. We could hear Jill moaning and gasping for air but that soon quit.
When Jill stopped making noise Jeff turned to us and informed us that Dane would not be joining us because he fell off course and ran out of fuel, they provided no answer when we asked whether he was ok or not. We were then instructed to sit quietly while the crew filmed the introduction to the show. Jeff stowed his weapon and walked to the front of our group then turned and faced the camera.
The eleven of us that made it to the island sat on the beach in front of the crew and listened as Jeff, standing in front of us began his monologue. The crew did several different takes of the introduction, some very mild and not very informative others very graphic in nature about the upcoming course of our, the competitors, lives. Any time somebody objected or tried to move away from the group we were quickly reigned in and brought back to sitting quietly. What Jeff was telling the camera was incredible. We all sat aghast at the words coming out of his mouth.
