That would be because the hypotenuse of the triangle is actually equal to the sum of the hypotenuses of each of the "step triangles," rather than their sides; which, in turn, is equal to (w/n) * sqrt(2). Therefore, the actual formula should be: sigma = (w/n) * sqrt(2) * n. Which does, in fact, give you w * sqrt(2).

Your mistake is taking (inf)/(inf)=1. This is not valid.
(inf)/(inf)=undefined, it does not have a value.
