Today is a dark day in the world. The lone remaining light of humility and sportsmanship in the world of professional sports has been snuffed out by the harsh realities of real world economics. It is a shame that such a wonderful sport shall soon be ruined by the world in which we live. The last true team sport is about to die. That last sport where, after you score, you don't dance around like an idiot, the FIRST thing you do is thank your teammates that made it possible. The last sport where you play to help the team and not yourself, and at the end of the day you'd give up all your goals and points and awards and accolades just to get the team a win.
Today marks what would have been the first regular season game in the National Hockey League. At 6:30 pm central standard time (the best time zone) the puck was set to drop in Tampa Bay with the Lightning and the Fliers squaring off in the season opener. Instead we are faced with a lockout. A lockout severe enough to potentially wipe out an entire season. It is the classic impasse, greed versus greed, neither side wanting to budge an inch. Neither the players not the owners seem to realize, or maybe they don't even care, that such a lockout might squander what little popularity the NHL had. This could very well be the death of a sport as we know it.
Today is the day of lost innocence. Regardless of the outcome, professional hockey will never be the same. It will remain a sideshow, only getting national attention for its failures, assuming it doesn't die completely.
Today I join my neighbors to the north in weeping over the death of hockey.
Today I begin my mourning.
Bring Back Hockey.

This was really stupid, I'm sorry.
It's as though you're saying that there's no individual achievement (even though the entire team is made up of individuals who need to choose how much to stay together,) that getting points and goals for your self is bad for your team winning, and that greed is bad. It was the greed of businessmen that ran every thing in the first place.

Here here.
Even though Hockey will make it through this - it's suffering a great blow. And here in Canada, our bars are starting to look pretty dull D:.
Bring back my hockey, yo.

Who cares. Nobody watches Hockey except Canadians. Hockey is just soccer on ice. Both very boring.

I wholeheartedly agree. Being from Detroit, hockey is a very thriving sport here. But in other parts of the county the NHL is beat in ratings by the WNBA. This will cause severe atrophy amonst hockey fans and may even result in the contraction of a couple of teams if this goes on for any length of time. It is a sad day. Greedy bastards.
