All I see is intolerance towards other peoples choice of music. "punk" kids telling people how much they hate Good Charlotte and Simple Plan. Kids who like Classic Rock telling "punk" kids how unoriginal and simple punk music is. And prettymuch everyone making fun of "emo". I am damn tired of the elitism in our youth culture, we live in the 21st century, and yet there is still a class struggle, not between the rich and poor or the social castes but between genre kiddies.
I'm tired of people assuming they are better than someone else because of the way they dress and the music they listen to, or that someone listens to a certain kind of music because of the way they dress. Now don't get me wrong, I have no problem with hating a certain genre of music or a certain artist or band. I, personally hate the sex pistols because they were sellout self rightious assholes who destroyed the punk scene and Sid Vicious was a corporate tool who didn't even play bass. However, I would never tell anyone to stop listening to them or scream at someone wearing a sex pistols shirt and tell them the sex pistols suck. I am also very tired of everyone assuming emo is just a whiny derivative of punk or that all emo kids are depressed and cry alone in darkened rooms. Emo isn't really like that at all but no one really knows because few really go out of their way to dig a little deeper than what they can get from their televison and computer screens.
I care very much about music and I hate to see it destroyed by elitists. Just because you don't understand or like a persons particular choice of music that doesnt give you the right to tell them their music sucks or taht they should listen to some other type of music. And no one wants a half descriptive, rehashed history of a genre of music just to show you think you know your roots. Instead of bad mouthing someones choice of music, try listening to it and be objective about it. And instead of forcing what little you really know about your music down someones throat, learn more about your choice of music, like the history and the more underground scene. Or try out a new genre of music.
To sum up, don't be an asshole or a bitch to someone because of what they listen to, don't assume you know someone because of their chocie of music, and if you don't know much, shut the fuck up

For example, I like Yes/Led/Floyd and today's music (particularly indie).

Try again when:
a) you graduate from high school
b) you realize that punk and emo suck ass
c) you die and are reincarnated as someone with taste

No! All new music is crap and there have to be elitists to realize it.
I am a fan of Led Zeppelin, Yes, Pink Floyd, etc. and I HATE HATE HATE today's music.
There have to be elitists like me around to let everyone else know how much their music sucks because THEY'RE MISSING OUT ON SO MUCH!
Go listen to "Close to the Edge" and you'll get what I'm saying.

Are you saying that someone can't be a Led/Yes/Floyd fan AND a fan of today's music as well?
I hope that's not what you're saying, cuz that's downright retarded.
Don't you think a youngster who's into new music, if properly educated, could grow to love old and new music alike?

With out us elitists around, the shitty music would take over the world and we would be left with just crap bands like "Behind Ally Boys".... and "96.7 Degrees Celcius"! And who wants THAT?! I for one don't. Thats why I propose a massive genocide of anyone who listens to emo. VIVLA LA ELITISTS!

Just to for a balancing act. But everyone is an elitist when it comes to music selection. Oh, by the way, when you bitch about being better than elitists, it's not saying much about you or helping your rant...

Because they propagated a lifestyle of violent anarchy and jackassery which is a stereotype still carried today
---------------------------------
Propagating that lifestyle wasn't destroying the punk scene, it was creating it. It may seem like a stereotype to you now, but I'm old enough (yeah, I'm pulling the age card) to have caught punk rock the first time around--in the 70's--and believe me, violent anarchy and jackassery is what punk WAS all about.

I haveta balance out some of these -2s...
I hear what you're saying. But at the same time, I feel like today's youth are more open to a wider range of music...just listen to the radio! It's not uncommon to hear Simple Plan, Ashley Simpson, Maroon 5, Good Charlotte, Jay-Z, Britney Spears, Eminem, Coldplay, Kanye West...all in an hour!
To me, that says that young listeners like variety - they like and respect good music and are less confined by genre pidgeon-holing.
I used to HATE rap and hip hop. Now, I love it. In college, all I listened to was jazz and "jambands," thinking that it was the only worthwhile music, creatively speaking. But now, I listen to everything, from Miles Davis to Jay-Z to Coldplay to Led Zeppelin to Maroon 5 to Coltrane to old Michael Jackson...you name it.
I'm not in high school anymore, but it seems to me that kids today are less likely than ever to bitch about particular bands or artists. Maybe I'm wrong...but my gut tells me otherwise.
Currently, I find myself in a band that is a FAR cry from what I'm used to playing. I never thought I'd end up in a band like this one, but I did - and I love it. I'm sure there will be folks out there that will label us and hate us as a result...that's never going to change. But I think the more influences you can bring into your music, the wider your fan base...
so...who wants to hear my band?
:)

I'm probably going to regret asking... but, uh, how exactly did the Sex Pistols destroy the punk scene?

So what you're saying is, you're better than elitists and wish they weren't around?
No, that doesn't sound hypocritical at all.
Moron.
