I think that I need to meet some ordinary, down-to-earth yanks. Living outside of the country, in fact pretty damn far away, has given me possibly very skewed impressions of what things are really like over there.
I'm not prepared to crap on about political issues (god knows there is enough cannon fodder there), but rather comment on the general picture that we 'foreigners' draw up from the media that is put in front of us.
If I was to believe that the television shows, movies and particularly the news that spews out of the USA portrays an accurate cross-section of the population, you guys are in big trouble. Don't shoot me down on the television and movie stuff - I know that it's just entertainment - but it still is worrying in terms of what is popular as entertainment over there.
I don't understand how a nation can be so wrapped up in itself. I realise that it's a pretty huge country, and has a fairly cosmopolitan demographic - but that isn't an excuse to remain blind to everywhere else in the world. I was reading some stats the other day. I don't remember the exact figures, but an embarrassingly large amount of people in the States have never left it's borders, and even worse than that, have a grotesquely limited knowledge of any other countries in the world. (and I'm talking basics, like names and general geographic location) hell, some of these people thought that Africa is a country! Christ. I guess it comes from the top down ;P
It could be that they went into the smallest town in the middle of nowhere, with the entire population of 100 being related to each other, to fill out their little survey - but I somehow doubt it.
The only problem with writing this is I've never been there. Which is kind of why I'm asking... I'd love to meet some nice ordinary Americans, rather than ignorant, power hungry, geographically challenged egotists I get to see and read about every day.

Rediculous
Some Americans are smart, some stupid. Some courageous, some cowards, etc etc.
I talk to approx 100 americans everyday through tech support and even though they are calling because somehting is wrong they are still (generally) good tempered people. However, there is definitely an education issue in some parts: the reason i think is there is a small percentage of very smart individuals, who know that Africa is not a country, and then there is a huge percentage that does not. This may have something to do with the amount of upper class citezens (now melded with middle) to the number of lower but i dont really know so i wont guess.
I think large borders plays a small role as Canada is a larger country and they are (in general) more aware of current events and geography pertaining to countries other than their own.
I dont think americans suck, i kinda think America sucks but not necessarily the people who live there.

Good points, GodChicken and AlahAckbar. I do think that the major reason most people don't travel outside the US is that almost everything is a long airline flight away. I live in Colorado. I could get over the Mexican border in a day's drive, but who wants to go to the northern edge of Mexico on vacation? Nobody, that's who.
I visited Paris 10 years ago. I've heard about the rudeness of Parisians all my life; it's a common stereotype. Those Parisians, so snotty, so rude. Then I went, and everybody I met was very nice. Hospitable, helpful and pleasant. I was polite, I spoke what sad French I could after five years of school, and I didn't go to restaurants in a college sweatshirt and sneakers, and everybody was great. Point is, I think you find what you're looking for. You think Americans are rude and stupid, and you find rude, stupid Americans. The nice ones avoid you. I know I would. Somebody comes at me with an attitude like yours, I don't give him the chance to know me.

Please visit for awhile before you make your judgement. Canada may be bigger, but most of it is uninhabitable (sp?).

Why is it that if our country (the U.S.) is so bad, why do we have 8,000 immigrant's trying to sneak into our country on a daily basis? Maybe because they are far more worst places to live. And of course with our population being as high as it is of course the Asshole to regular joe ratio is going to be higher. Every country has asshole's, and I'm pretty sure China probally has for assholes than we do. I guess since we monopolize the media, and entertainment world's that make's us bigger marks, or easier targets.

I'll have to agree with you on alot of points. When I went to the US for a few weeks I met some of the most idiotic people in my entire life. However, most of my friends are American, and I grew up with them here in Thailand. They're awesome people, know that Africa isn't a country, but a continent, and are pretty intelligent individuals. There's definetely worse than the citizens of America. As a German I'd live in the US over Germany any day, mainly because I find Americans to be amongst the nicest people on the planet. You'd definetly not receive the kind of hospitality in Germany or England that you would in America or Canada.

United Kingdom Area total: 244,820 sq km
United States Area total: 9,629,091 sq km
It all has to do with the scale of things, man.
Your entire country fits inside some of our states. Think about how much of your own country you've explored, and then realize that most of us don't manage to travel more than one or two states away from home in our lives, much less outside of the country. The distance to Europe, Africa, or Asia is so vast in comparison to the 35 miles you have to go across the english channel to reach france and the linked transportation systems within continental europe.
Americans become more insulated from outside our borders every day. You go about your daily life, we go about ours. Most of us have to drive to work a longer distance than you live from the next town. It's easy to ignore what is going on outside when there is so much distance involved. Most of us don't know our neighbors anymore, either. Accents from cities like Boston, New York, and Los Angeles are different from those in different parts of the same state. You can pick out different accents from Georgia, Virginia, Alabama, Kentucky, Texas, and Wisconsin. They seem weird to people from other areas. Hell, we don't even have the same stores or products nationwide, its too far to distribute.

The best way to meet americans is to make the effort and visit america. Plan on 4 to 6 months
as some of our states are bigger than many countries.

I love it when people bring up the "Most americans haven't been outside the country's borders!" argument.
I really do.
You do realize that the VAST majority of people live hundreds, if not thousands of miles, from another country. This IS NOT EUROPE. WE CAN NOT JUMP INTO A CAR AND GO VISIT ANOTHER COUNTRY FOR A DAY TRIP.
For most americans, it is at LEAST a flight to get to another country. If not, it is a day, two days, maybe even a weeks drive. Going to mexico or canada is a long haul for many americans.
So, when the average american gets their two weeks vacation a year, how many do you think say "HEY! I know. Let's go to Mexico so we can't drink the water! Or even better, lets go to Canada! So we can see.....a lot of...space....."
The average american does NOT want to worry about international borders, especially now. They pack their 3.5 kids into the car, and they go to disney world, or dollyworld, or NYC, or any of the VAST majority of tourist attractions that the U.S. has.
For instance, you do realize that the US has TWO of the worlds greatest natural wonders, right? The grand canyon and Niagra falls. Now, for many people, traveling across the border at Niagra Falls is an exercise in futility: The traffic is horrible. I should know, I live less then three hours away.
But to hold the fact that most americans haven't been to another country is retarded. Very, very retarded. Kind of like you.
Hey, here's an interesting fact: Did you know that the U.S. Candian border is the LARGEST ungaurded international border in the world? Did you also know that everyone I know from my area (which contains the second and third largest cities in NY state) has been to Canada within the past two years?
If Canada was a three hour drive for the majority of Americans, more would visit there. We don't live a few hours away from another countries border. Think about it: The largest cities in america are NOT near an international border: NYC (7 hours away), L.A. (I don't know how far), Dallas (8 hours away from mexico) etc. etc. etc.
Dumbass.

About the geography thing... let's be fair. In Europe, you have small countries with distinct cultures and languages. You need to know more about that than Americans do. Canada speaks English, plus the general population has no real desire to see the same thing they can see in the States, but 50 degrees colder. Then there's Mexico. The only reason we need to go there is vacation, and the only Spanish we need to know for that is Tequilla.
+1, though, because half of us "Yanks" do fit the global stereotype, I'm afraid.
