This is an honest question. England or Britain, English or British (except for the actual spoken/written language, silly). Over here in America I've noticed that we use both terms interchangably. Is there a distinction that I have overlooked? I don't know, but for some reason I have this burning desire to know. Hopefully one of our English/British uberusers can help me out...

You get the two for rising a point that no one else has to my knowledge.
English is the description of a person fron England, the country, while british refers to anyone from the british isles, that is, any one from England, wales, scotland, northern ireland or the republic of ireland.

I think a lot of whether you consider yourself Enlglish or British depends on your politics and sense of underlying nationalism. Scottish people will pretty much always define themselves as Scottish rather than British. I will always say I'm English, but then I believe that if the Welsh and Scots want their own parliaments and to make their own rules we should leave them to it - as long as it doesn't affect us.

from a conversation i had with an Englishman,
England=England. a country.
Great Britain=England, Scotland, and Wales. primarily a geographic reference, e.g. "British isles."
United Kingdom=England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. a holdover term from the days of English might. primarily a political reference.

Northen Ireland is still a part of the UK. However the republic (southern and small parts of northen ireland) isn't. Scotland, england and wales are also all parts of the UK.

"Always have, always will."
Wrong, tea bag. So wrong.
Besides, I'd rather live in a world full of prostitutes and alchool and diseases and slavery and you name it than being surrounded with fat boring anglo-saxxons purists.
p.s. friday is Generalization Day. But I'm still right.

GB covers mainland UK - Scotland, Wales, England.
UK covers GB + Northern Ireland. Eire is a seperate country.
Although many use England and Britain interchangably, THEY ARE WRONG.
An Englishman is both British and English,
but a Scotsman is Scottish and British. In that order.
And the Welsh - sheepshaggers (no offence). Have'nt found a Welshman on this site yet.
Tastycat, I hope you were'nt trying to provoke an argument about the Scottish Wars of Independence because this review is already too long.
Note to American readers. Never call anyone from Wales, Ireland or Scotland English. NEVER.

A world led by the latinos?
Yeah, nice job with Mexico and those other crackwhore nations. English speaking countries run the planet. Always have, always will.

Thank you for helping, youarsoghey. I now feel superior in my knowledge of N.E. European geography as well. British people rock, except when overly intoxicated, then they just shout at things.

OKAY... How about this.
The three countries of England, Scotland, and Wales are Great Britain (the island as a whole).
Then, Great Britain and Northern Ireland make up the United Kingdom.
How does that sound?

Technically the Scots, Welsh, and N.I.s are British, along with the English. Being British is really being a citizen of the British Empire. THe reason you call only the English Brits is because they, more or less, are the British Empire, and everyone else id just who they invaded.

I didn't say anything about the Irish being British, but yeh pretty much about Scotland.
Great Britain is the Island between Ireland and Europe that consists of England, Scotland, and Wales.

Great Britian is the singl commonwealth of 4 countries, England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Ireland is an autonomous country unto itself.

No we don't. England is a part of Britain, Great Britain is not a part of England.
All elephants are grey, not all grey things are elephants.
Well...except for the green spanking elephant of northern Zimbabwe.
