Wow, I just wanted to comment that I really gained alot of respect for him from this. I've never really seen him angry before. He was expected to plug his book, and he just broadsided them.

i'm not prone to biting bait or petty responses, so i apologize for this one.
i just thought i'd note how funny it is that you replied three times to my minor observation, even while protesting (implied through your sarcasm) that i didn't hurt your feelings. i can't really glean any semblance of cohesive intelligence from your "muddled" attempts at verbosity and what you seem to perceive as figurative language. give the act up. you're quite obviously insecure with an inferiority complex, and trying to make up for it by stubbornly refuting others with seemingly deep, but actually incoherent reviews on a played out website.
a more concrete example to prove my point: your proclamation, "doth hath protested too much," makes absolutely no sense and proves your ineptitude. were you trying for something resembling "the lady doth protest too much, methinks," from hamlet? doth and hath are both third person conjugates. your sentence's modern english equivalent would be "does has protested too much." frankly, you must be in over your head.
i'm being perfectly straightforward. i feel sorry for you. you're no peak, no matter how much you'd like others to think you are. if you can convince me otherwise, honestly, i'll be quite intrigued.

not only was the post and later link to ifilm amusing, but just watching slapshot's ridiculous number of comments and time spent on this post was well worth the click. from an unbiased old/lurker point of view, he just came off looking like a thick-headed, bludgeoning, moron with too much time on his hands. cigar looks good next to slapshot, and that's just hilarious.

Sometimes its just better to leave things unsaid, thus keeping things muddled. I really do find that I'm enjoying the dunginess of it all. Doth hath protested too much. I'm so much dumber than you give me credit for. Galatically ignorant. A classroom of autistic children wouldn't copy off of me during a final exam if their live's depended on it. I'm not a smart man. I couldn't hold your Arrow Pen set with both hands. You're all seeing, knowng and have all the proper answers. You never miss a thing...Oh Wait?
Things unsaid.

The best thing about watching EVERYONE in the media who said they were not liberal desperately working to elect John Kerry is the certainty that they will fail.
Tucker should replace Kilby, he is also very tall and would be hilarious in that format.

Seriously nice to hear ANYONE challenge mainstream 'news' channels. CNN is a gatekeeper organization and never really faces a challenge to its point-of-view. It's nice to know that a voice with another opinion can be heard, however it is sad to know that it has to come as a surprise to hear it.

Yes, yes. Go for the safe remark about me. I will continue to attack you stupid fucking stance on me "watching the daily show to get my news". I pour over four or five different ONLINE news sites, I watch at least 12 hours of cable news, and read three different newspapers DAILY. What do you do? Go for the stereotypical remark about me living in a trailer. Nice and safe.
Look at yourself, your defending a goddamn show that toutes "The fake news" in their tagline. You make a broad statement about me?
I watch comedy central around 2 hours a week, I stay away from the "fake news". I enjoy the madtv program they air. And that's about it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You expect me to believe that you read that much but you don't know the difference between "your" and "you're?"

This was great. I didn't see the show so thanks for bringing this to my attention.
I heartily disagree with Stewart politically, but I think that he's absolutely correct about his assessment of the media. It is all hackery anymore. If it weren't, websites like factcheck.org would not be necessary. The media may make a passing mention of the inaccuracies put out there by the candidates, but they NEVER take the politicians to task for them. They just nod their heads. What we need is an interviewer to say, "Senator Kerry, you say, "X" but President Bush says "Y", both statements can be true in a certain light, but how do you respond to Bush's "Y" statement? No Senator, I don't want you to revert to "X", I want you to address "Y" - you know the facts, you know how the Bush camp can make that claim, how do you respond to those facts? Why do you think that the spin you put on the facts are more realistic than those of the Bush Camp? Might you be wrong about that?" Etc.
Someone below said that Stewart is getting less funny. I think that is what happens when you have an intelligent guy with integrity reading statistics that say some ungodly number of young people rely on him as their ONLY source of news. He understands the responsibility that his popularity engenders. I would look for his show to continue to move toward the more serious, because, frankly, he's the man.

Sorry about the baby stuff....I'm the father of 5 girls so I know what you're going through.
As for sleeping...try Dimetap..(kidding)

Look....Honestly , you seem like a good kid. I wish you the best , really...
OH yeah....Do yourself one favor ....I missed this awesome opportunity while my girls were all growing up...
Find a spot like a newly planted tree or a landmark that will be there for the next umpteen years and every year...Take a picture of your baby next to it....Like a time-lapsed picture book...Trust me the effects at a wedding are awesome. Had a buddy of mine do that for his little girl and it brought tears to everyone that watched it at her wedding.

You'll probably notice that faaaaaarrrrr more often than not, I completely ignore any tits or ass reference. In fact, I can't recall responding to one. I can't mandate what other people say, I can only control how I react to them. I choose to ignore it completely. I don't mind if you don't find me attractive; in fact, not only do I thank my lucky stars that you don't, I also find that very complimentary. You said you didn't mention my looks, so I gave you an example where you did, that's all. I also can't think of any pictures I've posted with my tongue out. I know there was one on Method's poat, though.
I have a BA in Education, a BSc in History, and I would like to get my MEd.
I've also taken enough hours to almost qualify for a minor in kinesiology. Basically, my ideal job would be an American History high school teacher and I would love to coach either track&field or swimming as well.

How have I trashed talked about your looks?: 1.Downs smile notwithstanding. 2.You've been reduced to "TITS, ASS and a vagina". 3.I'm not blinded by your bombastic beauty...because it isn't there for me.
Do you read and COMPREHEND at the same time?: Yeah, imagine that.
All I said was that you use them in here to gain some much needed acceptance..(which for a girl who JUST had a baby out of wedlock)is understandable. Baby at what 19, unmarried and i'm probably sure your career achievements are just as lackluster.?: Wow, somehow I've reverted back to 19. What happened to the other four years I've lived? Do you actually want me to list degrees I have?
Who's the halfwit?: Easy. You are.
You compare a wonderous man like Cigar to me, favorably?: Well, you called him wonderous yourself. And I would compare most anyone favorbaly to you.
Give me a break little girl.: Is the femur ok with you?
You're a grammatical soap opera in here.: English translation? Good God, you butchered that sentence.
And thats.......OK!:................................GREAT!
Who would want to be part of a woman who would want a part of a guy like Cigar?: How do you figure I want to be a part of cigar? Preferring someone to you translates to myself wanting to be apart of them? If that's the case, there are some mad orgies going down in the world right now, because I doubt I'm alone in my tastes.
...Hell maybe thats how you got into the baby mess you seem to be in...: By liking a guy off Übersite more than you?
You should read...: Great idea. Any suggestions? I could use a day in bed, reading.

WOW...OK..KRISTEN...<clearing throat>..I guess by that salvo you've gone back and read some of my replies to some of the things that seem to constantly fall out of your mouth. Downs smile notwithstanding.
"Hell Hath No Fury like a woman scorned"
Is it my fault that you're unaware of the delicacy of chewing on a ball of aluminum? I think not. Is it my fault with regards to your joyous journey through Planned Parenthood?...Not one bit. You get bye in here due only to the fact that most guys in here would give a nut to see you naked or "SUCK THE PISS OUT OF"..Thats it....Quite an acheivement I do say. You've been objectified by the Uber Elite....and is some sad way, you're ok with that fact...bravo woman. You've been reduced to "TITS, ASS and a vagina". For you to say that a person such as Cigar has more moral fiber and terpitude than I...simply points out that fact. So get pissy with me all you want because quite frankly...I don't care...I'm not blinded by your bombastic beauty...because it isn't there for me.
Raise the "Cigars cool as hell" banner all you want TongueSmiler..Rape post's are awesome as are most of Cigars post's...but you knew that didn't you?....You're so deep.
Just shows your true mettle and sensibilities.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Actually, I haven't noticed any replies you've aimed at me. Generally, I wouldn't notice you however this being 4am on a Monday and with you wiping your ass all over the site, there has been little reprieve from you.
So I thought it'd be amusing to mess with you. You seemed like a whiny bitch who would reply. What do you know? Puppets are great fun.
Anyway, I just went and researched your posts since you had so much to say about my looks. You would think the guy who can talk trash about someone's appearance would have to be quite the standard of all that is great and handsome. I would say something more in that area, but I was taught that if I didn't have anything nice to say, I should keep my mouth shut. I guess this would even apply to middle-aged, pasty, hideous, and chunky "lookers" such as yourself.
Maybe how I look has little to do with how I got on the MVA. Maybe it has everything to do with my lack of annoyingly gratuitous use of ellipses. Give it a shot, halfwit.

I see what you're saying Slapshot but I think that Stewart's show being a comedy show is enough to make your analogy a false one. His complaint is that Crossfire, a news/pseudo-debate show on a news network, is missing its opportunity as such to engage in thought-provoking discourse. It has nothing to do with partisanship, or pandering to the left/right. It has to do with reducing political debate to one-liners, false advertising, and all the other 'politics as usual' stuff. These are things that Stewart does not do, but is not obligated to avoid. Pointing out that 'he's partisan and so are the Crossfire guys' is like pointing out that they're all males; yeah, it's true, but it doesn't mean anything.

Your condescension aside, you may be right, because I don't know what in the hell you're talking about. I don't know what the butterfly is. I don't know the long chain of events that led to the realization that Jon Stewart is a hypocrite. I don't know how many degrees of separation there are between The Daily Show and the 9/11 report. I don't think anyone does, except for you. The only way you're going to manage a successful argument is by audiatur et altera pars.
The only thing I can extract from your responses is that you think Stewart is partisan to the left. NO SHIT. What's your beef with that? Being partisan is a neutral phrase. It doesn't mean a damn thing here. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only thing I can think of is that you think Stewart is hypocritical because he criticizes others for being partisan, when he himself is partisan. Well that's all well and good, except for the fact that Stewart isn't criticizing others for being partisan.

DMD....have you sat down and actually READ the 9/11 Commission Report?
No, and how is that related to this discussion?
====================================================================================================
Asking the relevance of 9/11 to this discussion is EXACTLY the problem I have with The Daily Show's play on "people...were just a comedy show" rhetoric
Just simply ...the Butterfly Effect. One day you will have Macro-vision. I think it comes with age actually. Domino theory in effect.
I guess I should have followed the lanolin masses and added my "Hell YEAH, John Stewart's the coolest" with the rest of the sheep, instead of pointing out he has no clothes on...my mistake....
wait.FUCK THAT. He is somewhat of a hypocrite but funny as hell.
To answer your question I will say this, after reading the actual 9/11 report and catching most of Jon Stewarts shows on ComedyCENTRAL, I still come away with a taste in my mouth that he's just as guilty of bipartisanship as anyone else in this current election. He just pulls it off with a slick looking fish-eye to the audience. He's hanging towards the left. I could pound on this keyboard for hours on end...do hours of research and looking up stats, but it won't matter because you never saw the butterfly that started all of this.

Why do you think they stress the phrase "fake news?" Why do you think Jon takes every opportunity to point out it's a comedy show? Thery're doing the best they can to stay funny without having people take news from them. Otherwise, there are a few other options:
1. Ditch comedy, become bi-partisan news show, get cancelled.
2. Make sure that the number of jokes per candidate is entirely even, comedy suffers, lose viewers, get cancelled.
3. Just go about it as they have, remind people whenever possible that this is not real.
Which option would you go for?

I never said NO ONE gets their news from The Daily Show, some people will, my point is that these people are dumbasses and Jon shouldn't have to tailor his shows to keep dumbasses from basing their decisions on his show. And if they're stuypid enough to do so, they're just as stupid to base their decision on something else jsut as trivial. Jon Stewart isn't at fault here, it's the dumbasses.
You sound like the kind of person who demands we put "Do not stick in eyes" warnings on Curling irons because some people will be dumb enought to do so.
The fact that we're arguing over The Daily Show's partisanship goes to show just how well they've pulled off the satire.

Then something happened. They started to gather underground support and an audience.
Here, read it for yourself:
Jon Stewart: King of All Media
By Stephanie Wargin | Sep 30, 2004 Print
Bill O'Reilly: You know what's really frightening?
Jon Stewart: You've been reading my diary.
O'Reilly: You actually have an influence on this presidential election. That is scary.
Stewart: If that were so, that would be quite frightening.
--- Jon Stewart on The O'Reilly Factor, September 17, 2004
Poor Bill O'Reilly. He and his confused colleagues in the "real" news biz just can't comprehend a world in which a satirical news show on Comedy Central, of all channels, actually matters. Jon Stewart has gone head to head with almost every major news anchor and pundit, and every time they ask, how? To which he chuckles and assures them that he and The Daily Show are not out to shorten their careers, that it's just comedy, for chrissakes, and his viewers know it. For the real news, America will still turn to the old standbys, solid journalists like Dan Rather.
But just a few weeks ago, O'Reilly attempted to crack the Daily Show nut, to find out how the show could wield such a mighty sword. As evidence of Stewart's influence he cited the fact that John Kerry "bypassed" the Factor for The Daily Show, on which he appeared back in August. O'Reilly fretted that the "stoned slackers" who make up the majority of Daily Show viewers would be influenced to vote for Kerry in November, which would in turn possibly sway the election Kerry's way. Stewart, as usual, said his viewers wouldn't be influenced any such way; all they want are some funny jokes.
His assurances, while always delivered in the wittiest of ways, are true, but at the same time not true. True, because most likely his viewers already know which presidential candidate they prefer. Not true, because his impact is less on the viewers and more on the mainstream press, which, in reality, can and does sway many voters with the stories it prints or airs.
The key to The Daily Show's success is its unique use of satire. It's highbrow mixed with lowbrow, but it's not just quick one-liners. Instead, Stewart offers smart, incisive commentary delivered with raised eyebrows and a smirk, as he batters down blatant lies and unravels yard after yard of spin. He has no patience for it, and you shouldn't either. But he, unlike others who unspin the spun, is not angry so much as incredulous. So his viewers laugh at his jokes; they relish his audacity to challenge the claims of authority. But, perhaps, they learn something in the process: the valuable lesson that the truth is out there, and to find it, the best man to trust is the guy who played the delinquent dad in Big Daddy.
Ultimately, what the show delivers is a more realistic and honest version of the news than what's offered by most network and cable news programs. No onenot Bush, not Cheney, and certainly not Robert Novakis safe from The Daily Show's sledgehammer of truth.
At some point, the media started to get the message that they were dropping the ball. You see signs of it here and there: reporters voicing stronger criticism of Bush's rush to war, or challenging both Democrats and Republicans (and the "non-affiliated" but strongly partisan 527s) to substantiate their claims; writers offering real policy analysis. Now, I'm not claiming that Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, et al. have single-handedly (or multi-handedly, as the case may be) launched the catalyst that will change the face of news as we know it. But the stats have surely made the rounds of the networks, both basic and cable, that more young adults get their news from a silly comedy news program than from anywhere else. Yes, it's funny, but it's not just a quick laugh they're after. The Annenberg Public Policy Center study found that Daily Show viewers are more informed about politics and political candidates than their non-DS-watching counterparts. (This may be a chicken-egg scenario, but does that matter?)
John Kerry got the memo. That's why he and countless other big shots have deigned to sit on Jon Stewart's couch, if only for a few minutes of airtime. But the question remains: Where, and how, will The Daily Show appear in the history-to-be-written of 21st-century journalism?
Once upon a time, there was another little Emmy-winning talk show called Dennis Miller Live on HBO. Each half-hour commercial-free show featured Miller talking with a guest, anyone from Dana Carvey to one-time presidential contender Bill Bradley, about topics as varied as race in America, baldness and sobrietyas well as a 1994 chat with Senator John Kerry on religion and politics. But the most brilliant part of the show was Miller's solo rants. For just a few minutes, Miller let forth his distinct brand of hard-core political satire that made you want to read the encyclopedia, the dictionary, the world atlas, and the works of little-known philosophers just to keep up with the humor. It worked because he stuck to the truth, no matter the arcane references with which he delivered it.
Stewart and his staff of "senior" correspondents pick up where the now right-wing Miller left off, only this time the satire is more accessible. (Note the show's just released America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction, a silly fake-history textbook that offers surprising insights such as: "William McKinley was our first African-American president.") It hits, as the survey says, a broader, and younger, target audience, including many who are just now starting to get the hang of the political game. Whereas Miller's influence could only reach so far, and it's doubtful he affected any major changes in the mainstream media, Stewart, befuddling as it is to his more serious-minded brethren (the actual real-live reporters and pundits), is prodding the press to rethink some of its recent indiscretions, and its lack of bravado in dealing with the Bush administration, as well as the dirty politics played by all sides. It's hard to predict the lasting effect The Daily Show will have, but chances are, if the network execs are paying any attention, change is on the way.
Of course, as Miller would say, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

slapshot- You're a dumbass. That's all there is to it. No one gets their news from The Daily Show, and anyone who does is just as likely to get their news from the guy walking down the street shouting and carrying a "REPENT!" sign. Some people are dumbasses. Jon can't help that. He shouldn't have to sacrifice humor to make sure that his show is "fair and balanced" as if it were a varifiable source for immediate news. The one thing Jon Stewart shouldn't have to say is "Ok I made this George Bush joke, now to make sure I'm being fair I need to find some kind of Kerry material to dig on. Nevermind the fact that he didn't say anything of not yesterday and it will be near impossible to draw humor from his campaign for tonight's show, I need to make sure I'm being as bipartisan as possible."
Just admit it, whether you're voting for Kerry or Bush, Bush's campaign and office provides the most material. So is the show leaning slightly liberal because Jon has a poliutical agenda, or is it just because the republicans are dumbasses who just make it too easy?

Only 1 because at this point in time I think Jon Stewart is in no place at all to accuse anyone of being partisan.
===================================================================================================
THANK YOU...finally, something above a 25 watt bulb.
Why are you arguing a point with which no one is in contention?
Stewart wasn't accusing anyone of being partisan, he was accusing them of being partisan hacks; operative word: "HACKS." In fact, he advocated a debate show in which partisanship was the theme, but instead of sloganeering bullshit it would have thought-provoking discourse.
===================================================================================================
Stewart was complaining to the gentlemen of Crossfire about things he, himself is guilty of. Albeit under the thinly veiled guise of his "Comedy" show motif. According to Cigar, "The Daily Show" is nothing more than a comedy vehicle and should be taken that way. My response was alluding to the fact that Stewarts show is much more than that. And noting that fact, he (Stewart) himself has a greater responsibility to make sure the things he broadcast's out to the masses is correct and up to date, without the flavor or partisanship. Thought Provoking Discourse?...with a fish-eye.

Slapshot, we've had one discussion on Ubersite. One. It was where Loki and I verbally whipped you about something. I don't even remember what it was. Anyway, no I don't have any handicap. I also don't know many people who do. My uncle's neighbor is in a wheelchair. I think he had polio as a kid. My grandpa is in a wheelchair now as well, after his stroke, but I hardly ever see either of them. I just wanted to leave the question open to see if you'd jump all over it, or use it to pretend like you had some amazing level of intuition. I think the results speak for themselves.

I fucking hate you cigar. But Jon Stewart is a god so +2. I have the clip if anyone wants to see it. I also heard it was on ifilms for free?
Best parts.
Stewart: In many ways, it's funny. And I made a special effort to come on the show today, because I have privately, amongst my friends and also in occasional newspapers and television shows, mentioned this show as being bad.
Begala: We have noticed.
Stewart: And I wanted to -- I felt that that wasn't fair and I should come here and tell you that I don't -- it's not so much that it's bad, as it's hurting America.
Stewart: So I wanted to come here today and say... Stop.
or
Stewart: Now, this is theater. It's obvious. How old are you?
Carlson: Thirty-five.
Stewart: And you wear a bow tie.
or
Carlson: I do think you're more fun on your show. Just my opinion.
Stewart: You know what's interesting, though? You're as big a dick on your show as you are on any show.

I would HOPE people don't get their news from the Daily Show. If they do, they are real jackasses.
Are there people who aren't exposed to news at all and hear what happens merely through the show? It is possible. But the same can be said for Jay Leno & David Letterman in a lighter form of it. And of course, then you can bitch that people are getting their news from the extra lame SNL show. (That show bites serious ass.)
I won't be ignorant and say those people are out there that don't exist, but I do have the opinion of someone who recently said "Not all people should vote. If you don't know who you should vote for, there is no shame in not voting." in fun of Puff Daddy's vote registration drive. Do these people actually know enough to vote for someone to be in charge of the United States? That is an arguement many liberals make at anyone who is uneducated.... But of course, if they vote for their guy they are exempt! ahah....
If people get their news from the daily show, they are morons. I think that states my opinion. In a nutshell: If they do exist, they are idiots.

Stab?.....and The Daily Show plays to whom? You don't believe that there is a good percentage of Daily Show followers that are getting their real world information from this show aswell? Come on...don't end up being obtuse. Stewart KNOWS the Daily Show has a huge, religious-like following. He should practice what he preaches. I mean hell....Bill Cosby is a comedy genius...but there is also a strong message in the jokes he tells. Stewart has to realize that.

See, Judoka's response was well done.
And cigar pointed out this story (and you know he knows full well that Stewart is in the Kerry camp!) Although, it appears he is only because he sees Kerry as the LESSER OF TWO EVILS as he hinted in that very same interview that Kerry's party was not great either... Just how COULD he do worse is what he says...Which, of course...I personally don't believe him. Because I think Kerry CAN do much worse than a 2nd Bush term or else I'd be voting for Kerry.
I agree with Stewart, though. The media sucks. They play politics to the delight of both republicans and democrats...they have helped further "divide" the nation, and they keep the 3rd party folks under the radar. Do you know the green party candidate (Cobb) and the libertarian candidate (Badnarik) were arrested at the debates on October 1st? Heck no...

Needless to say I agree 100% with everything Stewart said. The mainstream media are a bunch of cowards. They do a disservice to their profession and the American public with the pablum they spew forth.
Slapshot, how do manage to breathe? To compare the Daily Show, a comedy 'news' program with Crossfire, a polical interview show takes a monumental act of willing ignorance. By the way 'per se' not per say, and you are using incorrectly. You mean for example, or i.e. not intrinsically.

Crossfire is a stupid, idiotic show that is a NEWS CHANNEL. Nothing you see on there can be considered news. It's like Hannity and Colmes on FoxNews, nothing but guests screaming over the top of each other.
The Daily Show is a silly, but VERY goddamn funny show on COMEDY CENTRAL. If you take your news from there (like you seem to) your fucking stupid. But, it isn't FUCKING NEWS you dimwitted bastard. Can you not see that? IT'S NOT FUCKING NEWS, IT'S A FUCKING SPOOF OF THE NEWS. you get that?
IT IS A FUCKING SPOOF OF THE NEWS!!

They shouldn't be accountable for anything, news wise. You can't blame a retard for sticking their cock in your mum. Hey that's how you got here. You can't hold a fork company liable for you being so stupid as to stab yourself in the eye.

I remember when Crossfire was an hour long. I would watch it after school, fall asleep before it ended, sleep through Connie Chung, then wake up and turn the t.v. off when Larry King started.

Cigar..Private Pyle stunt double aside....you need to tone it down a bit before you really show people here just how ignorantly "doublewide" you really are. The Daily Show is indeed a "comedy" show. It's a show that derives its COMEDY material from REAL events in the US and the world abroad. The Daily Show is just as guilty of "skirting the head on and hard issues" as any other mainstream news show. I understand its a comedy show per say...but they also have an incredible respondsibility to get things right due to the fact that dumbfucks like you seem to get ALL their news and ideas about OUR future within the US and the world combined, from shows like this. I remember Jon Stewarts show the day the World Trade Centers went down.......Sadly, I just don't think HE does.
---
I can't blame him for not remembering it. He never filmed it. The Daily Show films around 6PM on the day it airs and the attacks happened at around 9AM. A rerun was shown that night (a new episode had been shown on Monday, so up ntil then they had planned on running a new episode on Sepetember 11) so I'd venture a guess they never even met that day, and if they did, a short one.
The show aired reruns for about 2 weeks, then they came back on and showed some of their more upbeat field stories in an attempt to make the audience happy again. At the end Jon Stewart gavea really kickass speech, and showed everyone a puppy.
Take this from a Daily Show historian, there was no episode the day of September 11th.
Jon Stewart kicks ass.

While watching that, my jaw dropped every 30 seconds. It was amazing. He didn't back down from anything.
It's really interesting to me that a professional comedian would be so outraged that he felt compelled to speak out without hiding under the normal guise of comedy. I loved Jon Stewart to begin with, he's the sexiest person on television, but after the way he dominated that debate he has a whole new level of respect from me.

Jon Stewart Bitchslaps CNN's 'Crossfire' Show
10.15.2004 6:43 PM EDT
In what could well be the strangest and most refreshing media moment of the election season, "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart turned up on a live broadcast of CNN's "Crossfire" Friday and accused the mainstream media and his hosts in particular of being soft and failing to do their duty as journalists to keep politicians and the political process honest.
Reaching well outside his usual youthful "Daily Show" demo, Stewart took to "Crossfire" to promote his new book, "America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction" (see "Jon Stewart Writes A History Textbook That At Last! Features Nudity"), but instead of pushing the tome, Stewart used his time to verbally slap the network and the media for being "dishonest" and "doing a disservice" to the American public. After co-host Tucker Carlson suggested that Stewart went easy on Senator John Kerry when the candidate was a guest on "The Daily Show," Stewart unloaded on "Crossfire," calling hosts Carlson and Paul Begala "partisan hacks" and chiding them for not raising the level of discourse on their show beyond sloganeering.
"What you do is not honest. What you do is partisan hackery," Stewart said. "You have a responsibility to the public discourse, and you fail miserably.
"I watch your show every day, and it kills me. It's so painful to watch," Stewart added as it became apparent that the comedian was not joking. He went on to hammer the network, and the media in general, for its coverage of the presidential debates. Stewart said it was a disservice to viewers to immediately seek reaction from campaign insiders and presidential cheerleaders following the debates, noting that the debates' famed "Spin Alley" should be called "Deception Lane."
"The thing is, we need your help," Stewart said. "Right now, you're helping the politicians and the corporations and we're left out there to mow our lawns."
While the audience seemed to be behind Stewart, Begala and Carlson were both taken aback. The hosts tried to feed Stewart set-up lines hoping to draw him into a more light-hearted shtick, but Stewart stayed on point and hammered away at the show, the hosts, and the state of political journalism. Carlson grew increasingly frustrated, at first noting that the segment wasn't "funny," and later verbally sparring with the comedian.
