Sixteen

I awoke with a start, it's very disorienting to awaken in this little hut when it's still dark outside, it takes me a couple of minutes to decide where I am. After finding myself I notice the rain pounding on our shelter, the wind blowing hard enough to shake the walls of our shelter, and then comes the tremendous crash of thunder. Those few of us who were not awake by now definitely woke when the thunder boomed. Dane flicked the lighter on so we could see each other in the darkness and that's when we saw that Amy wasn't in the shelter. We looked around our tiny shelter again to confirm it then I went outside to see if I could spot her. The torrent of rain was so heavy that I imagined I could feel the weight of it as it hit me, and I was immediately drenched from head to toe. I looked around our campsite and didn't see any sign of Amy. I started to walk out further but I glanced back at our shelter and saw that the rain was heavy enough that it was melting from my vision. If I'd gone any further I'd have ended up wandering blindly. So, I turned back to the shelter and we began the ever-popular waiting game.

Amy was having a hard time sleeping; she gave up about a half hour ago and decided to take a walk. The group of "contestants" hasn't seen any dangerous animals as yet and Amy hopes to herself as she walks that she won't either. Ben told the group about the peak in the center of the island and Amy has decided that although it's dark she'd like to try to climb it to get a better look at the night skies, she can't see any stars from camp. So, she walks toward the center of the island, working her way through the thick undergrowth, slowly working out her footing as she moves closer to her destination. She hears a strange rumbling sound that makes her think of loud applause, a few minutes later the skies above her open up and seem to be trying to empty their contents on her. The ground beneath her has grown slippery and she slips as she tries to turn back to camp, when she gets back up she can't remember which way she was facing.

Scared and confused she tries to keep her rising panic in check, and fails. She starts blindly running through the island forest until she slips again. This time when she falls her head hits a tree trunk on her way down and she is mercifully knocked unconscious. She'll sleep here for the rest of the night, exposed to the elements and unaware of it.

Finally, the light began to seep back into our surroundings. We still hadn't found Amy and had decided rain or no rain we were going to find her in the morning. We have already split up into four pairs to search and have just been waiting for some daylight.

Gina and I walk together periodically calling out Amy's name. We are headed toward the center of the island, the rest of the group are headed in opposite directions. The rain has let up some, it's no longer like standing under a waterfall, but it's still not a sprinkle either. Gina and I work our way inland constantly looking for signs of Amy's passage. When we got to the base of the peak we decided to climb up and see what we could see. So, once again, I found myself climbing to the top of this rocky piece of earth, and as I did my thoughts returned to the last time I made this climb. Boy that helped my mood.

We reached the top and looked out over the sullenly gray landscape below us. The rain was heavy enough to limit our vision to vague shapes and all we could really see were trees. Before climbing back down again I looked out toward the ocean and was shocked by the violence I saw there. The waves were bigger than any I'd seen before, not that that's saying much having come from Wisconsin. The lightning in the clouds was a nearly constant strobe making shimmery reflections on the heaving surface of the water. I saw enough, camp seemed to be fairly well sheltered and I decided we all needed to be there before the coming strength I saw finally rolled to shore.

As we headed back to camp we continued to call out for Amy, we changed our course so that we wouldn't cover exactly the same ground that we'd covered on our way out here. Gina shouted excitedly when she caught a glimpse of blonde hair through the jungle like tangle. She ran towards it and elatedly yelled for me to follow. And there lie Amy; she was lying on her stomach in an awkward looking position so I rolled her over. She was out cold, her breathing came in uneven hitches and she was bleeding from a nasty looking scrape on her forehead. But as I rolled her over her eyes slowly started to open. I helped her up and the three of us walked back to camp, Amy in the middle with Gina and I supporting her on either side.

Dane and Todd were already back at camp, but the other two pair hadn't returned yet. We sat Amy on her "bed" and cleaned up her scrape, we tried to talk to her about what happened but she was ready to pass out again. We wrapped her up in blankets and let her do just that. The rest of our crew returned together and were happy to see Amy lying in her bed.

The next two days were spent huddled in our little shack. The rain at times seemed as though it were coming out of a large faucet. We had some water running through our shelter by the second day but it wasn't anything major and we were able to deal with it. None of us strayed far from our little house not wanting to repeat Amy's experience.

Brilliant! Glad to see that the poor girl doesn't die alone in the jungle. Or at least not yet.

not sure, I'm writing it as I go and don't know where it's going. I have a vague idea but until i write the day's chapter don't really know what's going to happen next.

Keeping this on the MRR should be easy enough.
How many installments are you planning?

Still good stuff.

Thanks for the reviews by the way. I'll finish that thing one of these days, once I get some free time and/or work slows down a little bit.
