Everything in this post has been said before. However, saying it is not the problem. The problem stems from lack of execution of the good ideas. We all know how to solve the recent spate of problems on Ubersite. It's just making ourselves do those things that compose our shortcomings in this matter. Remember, it is clearly stated that we make the site what we want it to be. So here is my official "Guide to Finding Ubertopia":

First, let's deal with the spammers. Spam is ugly. Spam is detrimental to the site. Spam unjustly skews the ratings of users. Spam means nothing. Really, say it with me: "Spam means nothing."

If you are spammed, the first key is to remain calm. Slinging insults at spammers has always done nothing but fuel the fire. These subhuman creatures are like sharks. Once they see they've broken the skin, the blood is already in the water; it only attracts more of them and they will come in droves. If not by alters, then by their pathetic little factions. They are the "al-Sadr's little bitches"(sic) of the internet; brainwashed fanatical teens (figurative), itching to be edgy and controversial. It's easy to make the correlation, really. All these self-destructive bastards need is a cause.

Do NOT reply to a spammer on your post, ever. Don't make a new post for them, either. Ignoring them is truly the best and most effective idea. Simply put, if they have no ammunition, their guns won't fire. They'll get bored and move on. If the issue is the effect they have on your ratings, notify Bart and he will rectify the situation in due time. Truth be told, one, two, even five users spamming you won't affect your ratings that significantly. If they do, that's what our esteemed Mr. Cilfone is for.

Next up are the hitwhores. This inane race to the MVA is a joke and we're the butt of it. Every time we respond to or even view their posts, they win. They want hits and we just gave them one. If you don't already know who the hitwhores are, I'd suggest you start a mental list. Once you've identified them as a shit-posting hitwhore, never click on their links again; any of them. Deny their existence.

A hitwhore is the kid that always sat in the back of the class and made farting noises just to get attention. It's all about the attention they receive. If you give it to them, they then expect it from you at all times and launch a shitstorm should you fail to cooperate. This plan had already started working before the ban-a-thon that was recently launched. If we do this en masse, the whores have no choice but to cease and desist; the attention they crave is being focused on real posts and not on themselves. Sure, they'll come and drop loads of feces on the good posts, too, but ignoring them there also strips them of that attention.

If we could all do this and stick to it, it'll be painlessly easy to see who all of them are. After all, they then have no choice but to whore off of each other. Then, with patience, we can watch when they turn on each other as the spotlight narrows its beam and they're forced to fight for it. A hit war between hitwhores keeps their shit in their yards.

Finally, let's discuss the flamers. They are the ones who post good content, but always have snide things to say on our posts. I can respect these people, really. Their sad, lonely existence is permeated by the old stigma of public schools. They were the kids that always trashed other kids for whatever reason they could come up with. It doesn't matter why; in reality, they're trying to offset their own misery by making us feel the same as they do. The disguise and defend it as their personal entertainment. It's okay. The most important thing is to not get enraged by anything they may say. If you want to sling insults back and forth, cool. All that does is add heat and hits to your good post. You just CANNOT let the things they say bother you. Very few of us know each other to any degree, so there's a 99.99% chance that what they said is untrue. Come on! We learned that in elementary school. It's that simple; do the math yourself if you don't believe me.

Oh, shit! I almost forgot that most special of uber users, Random Joe(s). This is the little runty kid that hung out with the bullies but dared not attack until you were already down and bleeding. The most pathetic of these are the users who log out to RJ your post. It is of little consequence to ignore RJ's; they usually perform a hit and run anyway. All we should really do is shake our heads and pity them. Anonymity on the 'net is good, but these characters are just scared (of you, the "man", life, etc. etc.). The thing I find funniest about RJ's is that they do it to expound an opinion that doesn't really matter; so much so that they call themselves Random Joe's. Their ratings don't count, and if you take everything they say with a grain of salt, well, THEY don't matter. I see no need to chase a shadow. When you boil it down, none of our opinions really matter to anyone but us.

If we can all come together on this, the exodus of quality writers will stop. The key is unity. Instead of fleeing in terror from the storm of shit, we band together and drive them back into the bowels of hell (or their own, whichever comes first). We have to stop enabling them. That is the only way we can win this fight. Since this is a virtual realm, passive resistance can be a terrifyingly effective tool. Deny these people what they truly desire, recognition. We can still make this site what we want it to be.

For those of you who feel the age-old "post about uber. auto -2" shtick coming on, please at least read the post. I've even caught myself rolling my eyes when I see these types of posts, but I at least try to see if the author has a valid point.

Come together, Uber. Come together, right now.
----------------------------------------------

I AM aware of the hitwhoring in my title. That was to get you here to some real content in the first place. I never said I was above misdirection.

On another note...Fetish's latest retaliation against me appears to be using my name in one of his bot attacks. I repeat, Fetish now has a bot called 'electrictoothsyndrome' to go with all his other bot impersonators in his growing arsenal.

All users are encouraged to not only boycott Fetish by not even clicking on his stuff, but don't ever assume you are being bashed by who it appears to be.

One more thing, don't use the MRR to view messages you haven't seen before, (i.e. ones not in red), because there is a chance it's by an author who doesn't deserve your click. I suggest using the front page instead, and even there, when in doubt, click on the 'user info' button before opening, and scroll to the bottom to see who it is.

I know most everyone already knows how to do this, but if a fewmore of us are a bit more diligent in this, we can systematically suck the leeches right back.

Thanks.

Maybe there should be a list of posts with the most consecutive +2s by different users. That way spamming can't knock a post off the list.

+2 because I was unbanned so I can continue on in UberMadness. I was banned for the "lojope was raped" scenario, as was everyone who posted under that title (with a few mentionable exceptions). Furthermore, bart has been -2ing my last few posts. He has also been -2ing quite a few other posts. But I can't blame him, cause the ones he did -2 sucked.

ETS: You just get too angry, man. That's exactly what he wants. If you act out every time he does it, why would he ever stop?

What are your goals here? I know you're pissed about Bart's response to you and I know your pissed about fetish, but where is it leading?

We just need to go have a beer, smoke a joint and pick you up a pretty little stripper. Maybe while she's going down on you and I'm twisting a fat doobie, you'll realize that IHAKF has been leading you around on a string. 'Cause the way I see it, you're only playing into his own hands. He knows exactly what he needs to do to get a rise out of you, and I've seen it work every time so far.

And that is exactly what I'm stating AGAINST in the above post. You can't feed a stray dog for very long before it starts camping on your doorstep. It's time to stop feeding the strays here.

I hate that word, 'rationalize'. Makes it sound like I am not aware of what I am doing, or I feel bad about it, and I feel the need to excuse it now, which is not the case.

I see your point, but Fetish just overstepped his bounds. He spams me at night when few people are on, so no one really get much of a change to see what he does. That's ok, I don't mind uber seeing what I do. I have nothing to hide.

I don't mind hitwhoring as long as there's some kind of reasonable content. I was just saying to keep in mind the usernames of those who post complete and utter bs just to get hits. They also tend to post VERY frequently. My argument stills stands firm that if you do not click the link, they do not get the hit.

If this would become the norm and not the exception, the full-time shit posters will be forced to change with the times, or abandon their tactics forever. Personally, I think they fill a niche here and are capable of evolving if we evolve in how we deal with them. In fact, I KNOW they evolve. I have proof:

Fact: Things didn't get [out of hand(opinion)] until the start of UberMadness.
Fact: At that time, there were many occasions when ALL slots on the Most Heated were occupied by UM posts.
Fact: Those users already notorious for posting objectionable material (which often made it on Heated) started seeking the attention they had lost. Even small factions and 'fad' posting (guilty) started.

They changed their tactics. If we change ours, they will be forced to follow. If they want our attention and in turn, our hits, make them earn them. We can't just use a pacifier here, we have to wean them altogether.

ETS: I'm sorry, man, but I have to bust your ass here. Look through this post and see how many times you mention fetish's name. It's ridiculous. You mention his name in a negative connotation several times before you started getting spammed. Did you seriously expect any less?

The point in my post was to deny that he even exists. By giving him the attention here, you drew his fire. It goes no further than cause and effect. I mentioned no names (barring the pic, and it was appreciated) and meant it specifically that way.

Please, man. I call you my friend, but I can't side with you here about the fetish situation. You have to know that letting someone's 'net persona get to you so bad is very unhealthy. You started out here with some great ideas and points. Then, you got fanatical and started giving off this whole witch-hunt vibe. That vigilante attitude is the polar opposite of what I was trying to encourage in my post.
--------

That aside, I see the advantage of taking down the MVA. In my opinion, it has recently been a major reason for the sheer volume of shit posts. Again I stress, it is not my site to operate, but you can point your opinions in the right direction. There have been some great ideas for changes and replacements all throughout the reviews below.

It is up to you, all of us, to make your voice heard. Bart can't read minds(?) and he can't possibly read every review in every post, so you have to make sure that you are heard. Email him, be respectful, as we're all capable of doing, and voice your ideas and concerns. The worst that could happen is get a "no".

All right, I am being SPAMMED AGAIN!!! Jesus! They just DO NOT LET UP!

Can we move this along. I am about to get irate. Please Bart!? Fix this shit please! Now I am reduced to begging. And this is the last time I will.

Ok, ubersite. The very next time you want to read an I_Have_A_Kristen_Fetish post, all you have to do is look for the user Fetish_CopyCat coming to a town near you. He will give you all the content of Fetish with none of the guilt of actually clicking on the true Fetish post.

Don't be fooled when you see interesting names on the "last reviewed by" section of his posts either, for his sure retaliation, besides creating an "ETS_CopyCat" user, will be be to linkwhore and get your attention by creating false users and rating his own posts with them. They will be intriguing names and it will read things like: "Last Reviewed by: Badlands." This is designed to make you wonder, 'hmmm what could Badlands possibly be saying to Fetish? Don't fall for his shit.

It's FUCKING ON you little bitch! I will take this hit for the rest of you. Apparently this monkey wants to dance. OK Fetish, just wait till you post again, let's see how many hits you get then. As a matter of fact I will spend every waking moment I dedicate to ubersite to undoing the damage Fetish does.

Anyone who is -2d by Fetish will receive a +2 from Fetish_CopyCat, then when Bart undoes his spam in the future, your ratings will soar, and it will be fantastic. Furthermore,

It's GO time!

One more thing, I am tired of seeing Fetish posts on the MRR list too! This shit has got to go.

I think a large part of some of the people that do this shit is to cause a stir; to troll, not neccisarily to get hits.

To stop this portion, something has to be changed, not on the MVA, but rather on the most heated list. Maybe adding the posters name to the post...but then again, this can cause something good by a hated writer to go unnoticed...so they might not be as obliged to write it.

Also, Davros, all of that sounds good in theory, and I have heard it from many others not including yourself many times before. Problem is: it just doesn't work. They don't get bored. Their entertainment is in bombarding a user's posts and then watching as their own hits multiply as a result of the other users who see this activity perpetuate their 'legacy' by writing hate posts and causing general chaos in their name.

This method of trying to ignore them only goes so far. Although I fully agree it should be done by EVERY user with a brain, even I still mistakenly click on their posts, or click on a link thinking I am getting useful information on how to properly prepare a salad and see, to my horror, one of their posts before me.

At some point the MVA will have to go, otherwise Bart will not be able to keep up with the cigars, the Fetish's, etc anymore.

This is what we need more of. THIS is what brought me to Ubersite in the first place. I saw a place where people can exchange their ideas in an open forum, as well as display their writing prowess.

I love you guys and gals. Together, we can make this place exactly what we want it to be.

I have a 9-ball match, but I'll be back to address some of the awesome points brought up here later. Keep it up.

Good Post

Well Written.

Personally I write what I want when I want.

I don't often follow up on my posts, because they were "in the moment" sort of things, plus I don't get rated that much.

I know of the spammers and although i have never been personally affected by them, I wouldn't go chasing their posts as this in effect perpetuates the myth.

I also avoid reading posts by these people, as much as i make sure i read posts by certain others.

I think, rather than a campaign, we all just need to do our thing, and let others do theirs.
If they get no response they soon get bored.

There is too much good stuff and too many good writers on here to worry about the idiots.

Just my 2 cents.

EXACTLY Monarch!

And the cool thing about that would be that it would encourage ANYONE with enough skill and will to write good stuff, which I think folks like Spiral and Degreeless and even Fetish are completely capable of if they tried, the incentive to start doing so.

If it were a rotating, weekly Highest Rated Authors list instead of an all time MVA, then the real stardom would come to those who were doing a good job, whether it be an old timer like Bart and JMG114 or a great newcomer like Julia or Badlands.

It just makes too much sense to ignore. Someone help me get this message out please! I can't do this shit alone. Petition Bart. Don't be rude...just voice your concerns. Tell him you're tired of the MVA list and all the drama for which is serves as a root. I have already emailed him myself.

I am not encouraging spamming him, that would be counter-productive. Just tell him in a gracious and respectful manner that you are down with this idea and would like to see him try it as an experiment for a while. If it doesn't work out after a reasonable amount of time, we can go back to the spamming and the flaming and the name-calling, and the useless posts again.

Then when you're done write your Congressman and tell them to bring our troops home and give them a parade...with ice cream!

I like the idea of perhaps making it a highest rating for the week thing, sort of like on pulsehead. Why would anyone want to kill a user's rating if it's only for a week? This would also allow some of the seldom seen new talent to show their stuff to a larger audience - unlike the current system which tends toward established users...

(See, folks, I am a friend of the little guy too.)

I think this is the best idea so far.

It'd be nice to see those posts get some more coverage, instead of watching folks like Spiral slowly climb the ladder with posts the have fuck-all to do with anything.

And it would prevent the trolls a bit. (If only a bit.)

That's what this post is for...camping.

This message HAS to be heard! You might all think I am a dumbass...and you'd probably be right. You might not like something I've said about your posts at some point, and your anger may very well be valid. I know I have said things that were offensive to people on uber before, and for that there is really no excuse other than lack of wisdom on my part.

I am right on this though. Sure it's easy to come along and spit flames at me or at Silvrwolf for what only amount to useful suggestions, saying that it'll do no good, that things will not change. "Sure it's a good idea, but it'll never happen."

Well I am tired of resigning myself to that philosophy. My dad always told me growing up, "son there is a lot of shit in life you have to take, and a lot of it you don't have to take." I think that was his adaptation of the prayer of St. Frances, but the point wasn't lost on me.

I don't feel I, nor anyone else should have to just sit back and take this shit anymore. I want to see über grow and prosper, no die amid the ashes of inaction. I want our über children, and all their über children to be able to run free, holding hands and licking oversized lolly pops on an übersite free from the I_Have_A_Kristen_Fetish and Degreelesses and Spirals of the world.

Yes, I have a dream...

and it's becoming a nightmare...and I am tired of idleness. Likewise I am tired of retaliation. I want a permanent fix. I think this is it, uber.

I am not saying take away the user's account info data. I am saying don't advertise it on EVERY SINGLE FUCKING PAGE with an MVA list.

I don't think people really need another reason to be pompous assholes by being on a list on the left-hand side of my screen. If they want I'll give them a GOOD reason to be assholes.

Look, all I am saying is this: I am tired of these posts that have NO content and a hitwhoring title. I just think in their minds the ends justify the means, and they somehow equate MVA with success instead of simple, good writing/posting. We could change all that by removing that one little piece of code that writes that pretty little list, the links of which I never click on anyway.

Tell me, honestly, do you really use that list as anything other than a shortcut to the good users on it?

Would you really be sad to see people like Fetish suddenly lose their sense of purpose and direction? If so, you are one of 'them'.

I don't even feel there is an argument here. Everything I've said is self evident and should really require no further purport on my part. I have a feeling I will anyway though...just for the hell of it.

Yeah, it is alright having MVA, but I seem to remember a time before people knew how many hits they had. There was no 'everything you want to know about ________' section. There was hardly any hitwhoring, because nobody really knew how many hits they had total until they made the MVA.

Sadly, back then, there were those who actually went through each individual post and COUNTED their hits. The addition just made it easier for them.

Yeah, with what smurfs said, you're assuming that the rating system is some sort of accurate measure of quality when it isn't necessarily.

I really don't think there's any sort of revolutionary alteration possible here. It's up to the users to take responsibility for what they view/deal with, as SilvrWolf put it in this post.

A big part of this site is an exercise in growing thicker skin and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Even though a few people will rip you apart, a few people will also support you. This site scrapes away all of the expected politeness of reality and leaves you with the ugliness and honesty of everything underneath. No matter how you change the layout or the status symbols, people are still going to be shitty. Morons will get +2s from other morons for their stupid posts, awesome users will get -2s from assholes just because. But chances are, Bart would have to deal with a LOT more whining about rating-abuse and no way in hell would he appreciate that.

There is no utopia, and subsequently there is no possible ubertopia.

How would you balance for the users who have only one post, rated 2 by one person? The more established someone is on the site, the less likely it is that they have an extremely high rating, which is counter-productive to what you want to achieve. I like the way you guys are thinking though.

Highest Rated Authors: this would be a far better gauge of popularity. Start a campaign to switch the MVA to it.

-----------------------------------

Consider this the start of the movement right here then. It makes a lot of sense to me to take down the MVA...whether we replace it with an HRA (Highest Rated Authors) list or not. HRA would post its own set of potential problems that I don't think would necessarily be the lesser of two evils. But one thing is clear: the MVA only serves to detract from the integrity of the writing on this site. It might not have always been this way, but it's certain that it is now - and just as the Constitution of the United States is designed to be flexible and change with changing times, so should the code on this site in my opinion, especially if it's the desire of its frequent users.

Bart is not obligated to do this. He's not even obligated to consider it, but he has to at least admit that it has its good points. I understand the need to preserve the legacy and charm of übersite, but I don't feel that removing the MVA list would do anything but restore the charm that so many feel is being lost.

I am not a 'legacy' user in terms of user ID #, but I have been lurking long enough to see how things work here. The site is not that old. It's not as if we'd be rewriting the bible here, folks. The first post was on 1999-11-30 01:49:54.

This, while being a good run for an independently run web site, this is not that long ago. I am not asking for much change. Nothing else should be touched. Everyone should still be albe to see how many hits they get, but leave the MVA analysis up to the users to figure out. Don't endorse it on every page on the left.

My name is electrictoothsyndrome, and I am asking for your vote for the president under the Ever-So-Slight-Reform Party. Iraq is now a free nation...blah, blah, blah. Thank you for your time, and God bless America.

A capibara can grow to be about 80 lbs. The one in the pic looks so large because they are notorious for grazing vegetation down nearly to the ground. I say all the good users who are left should ban together to petition Bart to take down the MVA entirely. It is the crux of the problem.

It's like if money were suddenly taken out of society... How would things change? Sme concept. It would be an uber revolution. I don't need the MVA to respect Bart and his position. I don't need the MVA to tell me I should respect JMG114 or Razor or Loki. That should be expected.

Lets get rid of the MVA and possibly come up with a HRA (Highest Rated Authors) list instead. Let's change the name of the game...shake things up a bit. He that does not move forward will be trampled underfoot. He who does not evolve will see his kind die out. He who does not adapt will be left frozen when the cold winds of winter blow.

If Bart does not wish to expend the time to come up with an effective and permanent way to deal with the antics of the fuckstick crowd, then nothing a standard user can do will ever be enough.

His intent has been clearly stated time and time again. He doesn't care what people post, he only cares if it disrupts the operation of the site itself. I would think he was more pissed about those idiots filling the front page with the same title under all their alternate ID's than he was about the poor taste and content.
