I went to a concert last night by Morrissey. If you do not know who he is check out http://www.morrissey-solo.com/ He is currently the muse of Nancy Sinatra and he was in a great
band called the Smiths before he started working solo. The concert was in Nashville and I was prepared to be the only person in the parking lot with a Bush Cheney sticker but I was not
prepared for the opening.
It started as I was asked by many people to join PETA on the way in and finally when the man was blocking the door to my seat I said, "I will take a whole wheat pita with steak and cheese inside". That did not go over well but at least I got to my seat.
The concert opened with total darkness and then a techno rythym over which an Irish woman from
the sound of the voice began to say things in dramatic fashion. The Smith's used to spend alot
on Chrysanthemums and Gladiolas so Morrissey could pass them out at gigs and wave them about but
now solo he just has a depressing voice over. I settled in and figured that it was just to get me
in a depressed mood so I would appreciate the beauty of the sadness that pervades his music. It
turned out to be different. Picture semi darkness where you can make out the shaved heads of the
guys in faux fur (leopard is popular among this contigent of vegans for some reason?) and girls in
fishnet and european whore makeup (Christina Aguilera) all bobbing zombie like to the dramatic
spoken word...
"Racism, firehoses, segregation, apartheid, Nelson Mandela in Prison, Senator Jesse Helms..."
I was somewhat disturbed but remembered that Helms said he did not know if tobacco was addictive
so I decided to just chill. I started even agreeing when the female Irish voice said, "consumerism" then it was...
"fascism, nazis, tiananmen square, murder, degradation, deforestion, burning the rain forest, the American way."
It was at that point that any credibility that the artist had to critique our culture was gone.
To criticize America for not caring enough about the poor is something I can accept, despite the
fact that we give more per capita than any other nation in the history of the world to charity.
To criticize our poor stewardship of the environment is also something I can accept despite
the fact that I consider all of Europe to be hypocrites for harping about Kyoto when they did not
sign it themselves. But to try to equivocate the things in that list?
When I said loudly "God Bless America" the people around me looked at me with hatred and disgust
and I realized it was not because they hated God, it was because they hated America.
Then I read this about the self described "fight for the soul" of the ACLU http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/19/national/19aclu.html The ACLU had previously refused 500k from the government because the money required them to screen their employees to make sure they were
not contributing money to terrorists or members of terrorist groups. Now we have this:

ACLU turns down $1.15 million in funding
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
NEW YORK -- The American Civil Liberties Union has turned down $1.15 million in funding from the Ford and Rockefeller foundations, saying new anti-terrorism restrictions demanded by the institutions make it unable to accept their funds.
In a statement on the organization's Web site, ACLU executive director Anthony Romero said
ambiguous language in the grants could foster impediments to free speech and includes terms like "bigotry" whose meanings are too vague to support in any funding agreements.
The ACLU's move is an apparent reaction to new restrictive language by both foundations. The Ford Foundation now bars recipients of its funds from engaging in any activity that "promotes violence, terrorism, bigotry, or the destruction of any state."
The Rockefeller Foundation's provisions state that recipients of its funds may not "directly or indirectly engage in, promote, or support other organizations or individuals who engage in or promote terrorist activity."
Romero said such vague grant language "could have a chilling effect" on civil liberties. "The
ACLU cannot effectively defend the rights of all Americans if we do not stand up for those same rights ourselves," he said.
In a statement, the president of the Ford Foundation, Susan Berresford, sought to minimize the dispute.
"We accept and respect that we have a different mission from the ACLU, even while we share the
same basic values," she wrote. "We are proud to support the ACLU's defense of free speech. We do not, however, believe that a private donor like Ford should support all speech itself (such as speech that promotes bigotry or violence)."
When I heard people saying that there are America haters among us I assumed that they were jingoistic and overly concerned about nothing. Recent experiences and reading quotes of people
who say that the U.S. deserved 9/11 have made me reconsider. The ACLU is being outrageous in
this case and what they are doing is not ensuring due process for all. The grants do not require
them to not defend terrorists after they are charged, they require them to promote terrorism.
For those whose first thought on 9/11 was that maybe it was a worthwhile political statement,
you are a pathetic bastard. For those who have been brainwashed into positive tolerance that has
robbed them of the ability to condemn murder, I pity you. For those who deny America's greatness,
those who supported the fascists before WWII and the communists during the cold war, I say that
your constant criticism is not politically motivated it is just unamerican.
Dissent is healthy and needed in a vibrant democracy, but treachery is a word that is not misused
when it is used to describe those who hate our country and who seek to pacify the murderers and
work with them instead of fighting them. I am astounded by the hatred of some towards this nation
of unprecendented liberty and I condemn their hatred. This is country with a plethora of problems
and foibles but it is also the greatest and best place I can imagine living.
God Bless America.

2 years ago I would never have dreamed that anyone would think liberalism was a bad thing
I am a terrible poster but soon I'm going to put some effort into a post defending liberalism.
Bring your serious discussions to that.

The ACLU is about as anti-american as they come. I have always thought that there must be a way to raise suit against the ACLU for undermining the goverments efforts to protect me from terrorism. I would sue them for a billion dollars and then donate the money or part of it to pro-american groups. That would really piss the aclu off.

I am saddened by the lack of any real debate provided by any liberals right now. Perhaps they are all too busy fraudulently signing up felons or fake voter names in Ohio, or buying the crack to pay them.
Fallujah is part of a group of people in the minority who were favored by Hussein and his regime while he oppressed and murdered those in the majority who dissented. They are not happy with the idea of democracy in Iraq because they would be denied the preferential treatment on which they built their lives. I do not think the uprising their against the new Iraqi government or the misery heaped on the few civilians who have not taken an active side either against democracy or for it, is reason to hate America. I also think the women of Fallujah will be much happier with freedom than with restriction and oppression.

So who decides what is treachery? You? Who draws the line? The milkman?
Now you know just like me that most country on Earth has made atrocities. Seeing that America is all over the place, it most have commited quite a few no? A quick look in the last 50 years should answer that question. Have you ever condemned these? Or does your "ability to condemn murder" only applies to anything out of your homeland's border?
I don't hate you because you're american. I just can't stand your shitty logic that could be deconstructed by an autistic 5 years old.

Pretty good post, but Im fairly sure that britain signed the kyoto agreement.
Im British and I get fed up with alot of the anti american sentiment that gets thrown around but on the other hand if you set yourselves up as 'the global police' then you should expect criticism.
