IV

We had been dating for about a month when I gave Sarah the invitation. My older brother, Brian was getting married to his girlfriend of 3 years. I asked my mom if I was allowed to bring a date and she gave me an invitation to give Sarah. She was so excited that it was all she talked about the entire day of school. She bought a new dress, and made appointments to get her hair and nails done, the usual girl thing. We made plans for her to meet me at the wedding, I was the best man, and I had to stay with my brother all day.

So the wedding day finally arrives and things are hectic, as is to be expected. I make sure my brother has his tux, and make sure I get him there on time. I escorted people to their seats, and smiled for what seemed a million pictures. But through the entire process of this, I was constantly looking for Sarah. She told me she probably wouldn't be there until right before the ceremony began. Most of the guest had arrived, the music had started and everyone was in their seats. The ceremony was taking place at my Grandmas property, by one of her large ponds. Everything looked absolutely beautiful, especially the bridesmaids, and the bride herself. I was standing up front next to my brother, waiting for Katie to come down the aisle. Everything was in place and everyone stood to their feet. Katie walked down the aisle with her father, and she looked absolutely beautiful. I was so happy for my brother and my soon to be sister-in-law. They were truly in love, and I was starting to appreciate what that really meant. The look on Brian's face spoke more than any words could have at the moment. The smile he gave her was solely for her. Even though everyone there beside the lake could see it, she was the only one who understood what that smile meant. The day had come for them to begin the rest of their lives together, and they couldn't wait. My father was a pastor, and performed the wedding ceremony for them.

"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today, in the sight of God, to join Brian Jeffrey Greene, and Katherine Ann Dawes in Holy Matrimony." He started out. He looked so proud to be here, we all did.

Then, I looked out at the crowd, and forgot everything I had just thought. There she was, and she stole my breath away. She was walking towards the back row, and was smiling at me the entire time. She was wearing this white dress that had thin straps that crisscrossed in the back. It also showed off her tan legs and her hair was done like she was a princess. She mouthed,

"Do I look ok?" I just nodded; the ability to speak was gone with the ability to breathe. She looked gorgeous, beyond gorgeous. There were no words that would come close to doing justice of how beautiful she looked. I couldn't take my eyes off of her; she distracted me so much that I missed my queue to give my brother the ring to put on Katie's hand. He was only mad until he looked at what I was staring at and saw Sarah. He just winked at me and said, "thanks bud."

The rest of the ceremony went perfectly, and they kissed, we clapped, and everyone made their way to the reception. The reception was taking place in the field on the other side of the lake. There was a huge tent covered in lights that danced like fireflies in the evening air. Music started to play, and everyone was laughing, and smiling, and having a great time. The food was served, and I got to give my best man's speech. I guess it must have been good, because most of the ladies had tears in their eyes, with smiles on their faces. I went and found Sarah after that, to see how she was enjoying her night. I found her sitting with a group of people from my school.

"How's everyone doing tonight?" I said to the whole table. Everyone said they were having a great time, and we all exchanged compliments on how great each other looked. I sat down beside Sarah and we held hands as we watched Brian and Katie share their first dance together. Then the DJ invited everyone to come dance. I smiled at Sarah and led her to the dance floor.

"Finally I get a chance to tell you how beautiful you look tonight." She had her hands wrapped around my neck, and was smiling at me so beautifully. Her eyes were shining even brighter than the lights on the tent.

"Well you look pretty handsome too if I do say so myself."

"So are you having fun?"

"I don't know anywhere else I'd rather be then right here with you." The slow song played on as she continued to stare into my eyes. It was as if she was trying to stare into my soul, to find out what I was thinking.

Well, my thoughts were centered around a couple of things. One, being that I had never kissed her before, she was shy about this because she had never kissed anyone before. Lastly, I had never told Sarah that I loved her, and I did. The lights dimmed as the slow song went off, and everyone clapped, I leaned into Sarah's ear and said,

"The next time the lights go down, I'm going to kiss you."

"I can't wait." So we went and sat down, while everyone did the YMCA and the hokey pokey. We didn't say a word to each other, we both knew what the other was thinking, what the other was feeling. We were just waiting for our cue to go back out onto that dance floor and for the lights to go down again.

"All right Ladies and Gentlemen, time to slow things down a little bit, let's have a couples dance, all couples out to the floor please." The DJ announced.

She got up and walked out into the middle of the dance floor and turned slowly around, waiting for me to come meet her. Her skirt swirled softly as she turned, as she brushed back a strand of hair from her eyes. The music started its slow rhythm as I wrapped my arms around her waist. Our eyes never stopped their constant gaze. We danced to the music in one unison motion.

"I don't know for sure what love feels like Sarah, but I have never felt this way about anyone or anything before. I love you Sarah Christine Lewis, I love you."

"I love you, too, Tyler Greene, with all my heart." She rested her head on my shoulder as my heart felt it would burst. She loved me. She was actually in love with me.

The song ended, the lights dimmed, and our lips met. For those brief seconds it seemed that we were the only two in the room. Nothing else mattered, not the other guests, the wedding, all my happiness was gathered in that one moment, and it still stands as one of my fondest memories to this day.

Decent story. However, you state that it has been 40 years since you lost her and at your brothers wedding you were listening to YMCA? As far as I know it came out in the 70's.

Memories....

I saw this in a movie about a bus that had to speed around a city,
keeping its speed over fifty, and if its speed dropped, it would
explode! I think it was called `The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down.'
