I could hear the rain smash and roll on the tin roof outside my window. My window faced the street, and was above the porch. God how I hated that window. That window, where everyone could see me. Everyone could watch me. Watch me sin. Watch me in the essence of my evil. I sat on my bed, my back to the wall as the sun crept slowly down. It was like a stale sunlight that drifted in through the warped panes of glass in my window. Crusty. Almost old. I'd seen it thousands and thousands of times. God how I was sick of it. Sick of every little fucking thing. Sick of the day. Sick of the night, and sick of the transition between the two. But who was I to bitch about it all? What fucking good had I done? Hell no I hadn't warranted my stay here.
Writing is an artform. Just like painting, creating music, or forging steel into delicate shapes. It's art. We can express ourselves by how talented we are in that art. Genius is not the lesser of any evils, or a spectrum. It's how we choose to display our genius that we do this.
I had been thinking of writing a fictional story, using myself as a character, and my life as the settings. But write about what? I could write about doing somthing monumentally good, somthing pristine, and great that everyone would love. I'd write about my character doing somthing totally gangsta.
And then it hit me; Just what IS gangsta?
I went to the place where I think best. Where I can clear my head, think about a million things, and it all makes sense. I got up and I took a shower. As I was standing there, watching the water run down my chest, I thought about how clean the water is.
"Keepin' the place clean" I said to myself. And I thought about that. "Keepin' the house clean for my woman." I was on to somthing. "Keepin' the yard clean for when kids come to play. Maybe even help out to get the parks clean." I was smiling to myself. I was on my way to becomin' a gangsta..
"In order to go clean the parks, we gotta get up from what we're doin'. We gotta make sacrifice. Sacrifice your time, and maybe even your money. Being Charitable, that's keepin' it gangsta. Keepin' the place clean, makin' the world that much better. Set an example for the kids. Be a big brother. Be a good Dad. Don't hit your woman. Treat everyone you meet with respect." I had thought to myself, as all this rolled out of my head, 'I've heard this before.'
Anyone ever been to kindergarten?
Have we not heard all these things in kindergarten, at least a couple of times?
Share your cookies. Clean up the blocks. Don't hit. Turn the water off when your brushing your teeth, don't swear in front of your baby brother- or at all, be kind to everyone around you.
Why the hell aren't we doin' this now? So many of us are just sittin' back, watchin' the world go by doin' nothin'. Just turn your head as you drive by the park, littered with trash. Kids don't wanna play there. No kids playin' stickball in the street anymore. Wannabee gangsters fighting. Bustin' caps when they get older.
