This years World Series is the 100th. In 1903, the Boston Red Sox won the first World Series.

Then they won again in 1912. Then 1915. Again in 1916. Again in 1918.

In the first 15 years of the World Series, Boston had won five (or 1/3) times. Then, all that seemed to change after 1918.

In 1919, the owner of the Boston Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees, trying to make enough money off the deal to produce a play.

Because the Red Sox never won the World Series ever again, the phrases "1918" and "The Curse of the Bambino" have long been hated by Red Sox fans (and loved by the Yankees).

As the years went by, the rivalry between the Red Sox and Yankees grew, until it became the longest and most heated in all of sports.

For 28 years after their 1918 victory, the Boston Red Sox never even won the American League Championship. They finally did in 1946, however, and went to the World Series. The Red Sox adversaries in this game? The St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals won the 1946 World Series (in Game 7) using a trick called "the Williams Shift". Because the Red Sox had Ted Williams playing for them, and beause he was a left-handed-hitter. The Cardinals' shortstop would move to the right side of the infield to make it harder Williams to hit the ball.

After their loss of that year, the Red Sox did not again make a World Series appearance until 1967. Who did the Red Sox play that year? The St. Louis Cardinals. Despite having the help of Carl Yastrzemski, the Red Sox once again lost the World Series--for the second time since 1918--to the Cardinals.

With many fans now beginning to actually believe in the "Curse of the Bambino", the Red Sox fought hard to appear in the 1975 World Series. While the Red Sox played their hardest (and while Game 6 of that series is considered one of the greatest post-season games in baseball history) the Red Sox lost the series in Game 7 to the Cincinatti Reds.

As another generation lost came to be, the Red Sox found themselves again winning the American League in 1986. All across New England, 1986 was hyped as "THE Year". It was the year that the Red Sox were finally going to break the curse and win the World Series. Boston did fabulous in the series, and in Game 6, they came within ONE STRIKE of finally winning the championship. Yet, when the first-baseman Bill Buckner let a ball slip between his legs, the Boston Red Sox seemingly blew their chance in 1986 and lost the World Series to the New York Mets.

The Red Sox continued for years to come within inches of going to the World Series, only to be thwarted by teams like the Oakland Athletics and (of course) the New York Yankees.

Then, in 2003, the Red Sox once again came together to try and win the American League. After being 0-2 in a 5-game series against Oakland, they were able to rally and finally beat the hated Athletics. After winning against Oakland, the Red Sox played the New York Yankees. The series had ups and downs, but in the end, it looked as "The Curse" was finally going to end.

In Game 7 of the American League Championship Series, the Red Sox were beating the New York Yankees 5-2 by the 8th inning. When it looked like it was all over, the Yankees came back. The game ended in the 11th inning, with the Yankees winning 6-5.

2004 will be the year that the Red Sox finally win the World Series, for the first time since 1986. In the post-season, they swept the Anaheim Angels and then made baseball history by coming back from a 3-0 defecit and beating the New York Yankees (their long-long-long-hated rivals) in Game 7 of the ALCS.

Last night, in the first game of the 2004 World Series, the Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals 11-9. With only 3 games left to win, it looks as though the Bo-Sox are finally going to make it happen.

This is THE Year.

The year when the Red Sox finally made the Yankees fans' shut up. The year when the Red Sox had their revenge against the Cardinals for 1946 and 1967. The year when the Curse of the Bambino was broken. The year when all of New England errupted into a celebration.

And I couldn't be more happy than to be a Boston Red Sox fan alive in 2004.

Okay, I knew 90% of this shit before reading this post. You should have just cut to the chase and went on with your Red-Sox-fan-esque "Yankees suck" chant.

Cards in six.

Babe Fucking Ruth (remember when Pedro said there was no curse? Disabled for rest of season)
Tony Fucking Perez (little known, he fucked the Sawks in game 7 of the 75 series with a homer)
Bucky Fucking Dent (took the little guy for granted, only hit 2 hrs that year)
Bill Fucking Bukner (gold glove 1st Baseman, who GOT YOU TO THE SERIES fucked you in the end)
Aaron Fucking Boon (bring the knuckle baller, sure, bang zoom)
And soon to be added "The Fucking Cardnals"

Cards fuckt you in the past, will fuck you in the future.

Yankees win 26 out of 100 years, went to like 39 or 40 WS.

dont count your chickens before the eggs hatch steve. You will lose. Don't forget what team you are talking about....we're talking about the Boston Red Sucks, the team you have watched lose your entire life and then some. Boston win? hahaha
Fools. It could even be the last inning of the seventh game and Boston is up ten runs. They will still lose, because they fuck up whenever they're under pressure. Boston fans are better than Yankees fans? Since when has the definiton of "best fan" include rooting for the suckiest team and being an all around loser? Let me know, I'm curious.

THE CURSE WILL LIVE!

GO CARDINALS, shut up the Red Sux just like you have done many times before.

Wow, I didn't really believe that Yankees fans were jerks until today.

Even if your team was the greatest in the world, that doesn't make you the greatest fans in the world.

New England has been waiting 86 years for this and finally all of us are going to finally see our team be the World Champions of baseball.

You guys always win, so shut up and just watch someone else play in the World Series for once.

The Red Sox suck, and will suck forever. You just further jinxed your team (if that's even possible, they're so fucked in the ass by the great Bambino) by saying they will win. Boston will never win another Wordl Series you stupid fuck. I have a Babe Ruth autograph ball and as a Yankees fan, I hold it (in its case of course) all the time thanking the Bambino for the curse and asking him to continue it. The Red Sox suck. They are the bastard children of major league baseball. They exist so their fans can writhe in agony and the rest of the world can laugh and win. GO YANKEES!! BOSTON, SUCK MY COCK!!

A baseball miracle is winning over one fourth of every championship in 100 years. But that's just my opinion.

It's a very interesting game, zakalwe, but I would doubt that you guys would get much coverage of it.

In the US, no one knows anything about Rugby or Cricket. Also, we have Soccer (football), but very few people watch it compared to Baseball, (American) Football, Basketball, Car Racing, or Boxing. Also, only old/rich peolpe watch Tennis or Golf here.

I guess sports are usually just a colloquial (sp.) thing.

The world series recieves zero coverage in the UK, all my info comes from posts here.

And they're just GO SOX, GO BOSTON, 1918 ad nauseum.
A little dull for the uninformed reader like myself.

But you Americans seem to take it pretty seriously.

CORRECTION: They was within one strike, then the Mets tied it, THEN the ball went thru Buckner's
legs. Give Bill Buckner a fucking break, the manager who fucked up. The game was TIED then Billy
Buckner let the ball go thru his legs. It's not like if Buckner caught that ball they'd win.

The curse is real. The Sawks will fall. Yankees reign forever.

G3 @ St.L
G4 @ St.L

The season is going to end soon, right?
-------------------------------------------

Why does everyone start caring about football before the Super Bowl? Why does everyone get all pro-American at the 4th of July? Why do people that NEVER go to church only go on Christmas or Easter?

It's the World Series, man. Get into the game!

although it is my duty as a diehard fan to +2 everything redsox, i feel this wasn't as nearly as good as it could have been. you left out some of the most heartbreaking loses ever (75 amongst others).

a) "the curse" as it is currently thought of didn't come into common thought until after 86.

b) who hates oakland? they're just a rival. we like to beat them because we like to win, not because we want them to suffer, as it is with the yankees.

c) "came together to try and win" --it shoudl be 'to try to win'...just so you know

d) And I couldn't be more happy than to be a Boston Red Sox fan alive in 2004. --awesome line. there is nothign in the world i would rather be than a sox fan. except maybe the guy in a threesome with the olsen twins. MAYBE...no, that's a close second.

its awesome to live in NY (although it sucks, and i'd rather be in boston) to come across another guy in a sox hat and just exchage a knowning guy nod and the words, 'go sox.' it is also awesome to see a guy in a yankees hat when i'm wearing my broken in sox hat and give him the condescending look that we have so long been on the receiving end of.

proud to be a sox fan...proud of my dad for being a sox fan, and proud of my grandpa for being a sox fan...and his father too...the last downing to see the sox win the series.

4th generation bostonian die hard sox fan.
