Note: this is not a countdown. Countdowns are never right, they always rank someone above someone who should be way higher, etc. etc. etc. They do, however, get on the right track. So, I'm going to abandon the counting-down system and just list my favorite drummers in no particular order. The only exceptions are the first three, which I do believe are the three greatest drummers ever, respectively. To throw something else in, I've included the band they were in, their best album, and their best song (not necessarily off their best album). Keep in mind I'm not basing this list purely on a drummer's talent for complexity, but creativity and importance, also.

P.S. I'm drinking as I'm writing this, so if you notice any spelling mistakes or something a little later on...yeah.

-John Bonham/ Led Zeppelin/ II/ Moby Dick
-Neil Peart/ Rush/ Moving Pictures/ 2112 Overture
-Keith Moon/ The Who/ Who's Next/ Overture (to Tommy)

-Ginger Baker/ Cream/ Fresh Cream/ Sunshine of your Love
-Mike Portnoy/ Dream Theatre/ Can't Decide/ The Ytse Jam
-Bill Ward/ Black Sabbath/ Paranoid/ Fairies Wear Boots
-Tim Alexander/ Primus/ Frizzle Fry/ To Defy the Laws of Tradition
-Jon Theodore/ The Mars Volta/ De-Loused in the Comatorium/ Drunkship of Lanterns
-Danny Carey/ Tool/ Undertow/ Undertow
-Mickey Hart/ The Grateful Dead/ Can't Decide/ Can't Decide
-Steve Gorman/ Phish/ Can't Decide/ Agh...don't know the name...they played it on SNL.
-Dave Grohl/ Nirvana, Queens of the Stone Age, amongst others/ Songs for the Deaf/ Song for the Dead
-Nicko McBrain/ Iron Maiden/ Number of the Beast/ Rime of the Ancient Mariner
-Terry Bozzio/ Frank Zappa, amongst MANY others/ Sheik Yerbouti/ Muffin Man
-DJ Fontana/ Elvis Presley/ Can't Decide/ Can't Decide

Yeah...I'm not drunk yet. D'oh.

What's with all these people saying Portnoy's shit on drums? I've heard the guy do fucking unbelievable shit, and he's done a bunch of stuff that's given me great ideas (i.e. the part in Ytse Jam where he played in sixteenth note triplets, while playing eighth note triplets on the ride cymbal-wish I came up with that).

-Brad Wilk's drumlines are the most boring, generic loads of shit I've ever heard.
-(To the guy who commented about Jon Fishman) Fuck, you're right...
-I know, I left out Haake. Fuck. There were a couple other people I was going to mention, but I forgot.

Terry Bozzio; good fuckin call.

but what about Stewart Copeland from The Police?

Good point. And Thomas Haake or however you spell his name.

Wiggles, Ringo was a HORRIBLE drummer. There is something to be said for simplicity, but more often than not he didn't even keep time.

Not bad. At least you've got some variety and you've got Bozzio whom no list is complete without. As usual, I agree with DMD on the Portnoy comment.

The Elandersson brothers (one plays for Arch Enemy and one plays for Cradle of Filth) are excellent drummers...Very creative and technically able... Same with the many drummers that have played for slayer.. though the latter arent to creative...

Now that I'm thinking about it, here's my list.

1. Keith Moon
2. Charlie Watts (And for the naysayers, listen to Exile On Main Street, you tasteless hacks)
3. John Bonham
4. Ginger Baker
5. Mitch Mitchell

Ringo? No musical talent?

Anyone who says that is mentally retarded.

Listen to Day Tripper, keeping mind that it was recorded in 1965, and tell me that his drumming isn't revolutionary. Who else was drumming like that in 1965?

You forgot zak starky, who would of thought any offspring of ringo's would have any musical talent . Also you left off two great session drummers; Simon Phillips(the who ,pete townsend) and Mark Brzweski (the cult, big country, pete townsend)

I'd say Moon is pretty much beyond anyone else. I think Bargain might be his best song.

Charlie Watts (Rolling Stones) is unbelievably underrated. I'd say he's in the top five if not the top three.

Ringo is also underrated. I'd say he's in the top 20. His son Zak (Zack? Zach?) is pretty damn awesome, too. Probably better than Daddy.

You left out Mitch Mitchell? You crazy?

Also Buddy Miles, Kenny Jones, and a couple of the drummers from Funkadelic whose names I can't remember off the top of my head.

That's all I can think of right now.

Anyone who thinks Portnoy is good enough to be in the top 20 drummers is a fucking idiot.

And anyone who mentions Danny Carey without mentioning Tomas Haake doesn't know what he's talking about.
