My coach's mother teaches 2nd grade at some elementary school around here and every year she has her class and our team exchange letters as pen pals. Swimmers generally are pretty good role models for kids because we work hard and we abide by the laws of our campus, county, and state. Well, usually -- this team has only three kids out of 35 who dont drink. Whatever. The kids think we are hot shit and look up to us so we write back and exchange letters throughout the season and eventually meet the kids after our nationals swim meet. It's a good time.
I got my letter today from a girl named Ganala. This is it, word for word:
"Dear Pen Pal,
Hi! My name is Ganala my favonk hobbie is doing catuheds What is your favonk hobby? I am 7 years old how old are you? Pen Pal, im in Mrs. Sexton's clasrom we are learning sign language this year. My favorile fod is hot chrcken uings. I have a best frien named Taliyah she is nice to me. We play with me eachother. I know you are a swimmer I like to swim. Whan we read, Taliyah sits beside me samtis I sit beside her. I also have a friendnds named Alexa, Paris, Kendra and Deje. We all play togethre. When it is HaPPY HaLLoween Im going to be a cat. I have one sister and one brother.

We also got a photo and a self-portrait of each kid. This little girl is ridiculously cute.
This made my day. They're learning sign language in second grade. I dont think I could have that early. Hell, look around high schools all across America -- most of these buffoons cant even learn another spoken language.
But the thing I found most amazing was her writing ability. Ignore the spelling errors. I laughed at them, but what second grader doesn't spell words wrong? She learned the alphabet two years ago. But in my composition class, before we turn in any essay, we must have ours reviewed by two different people and review two others ourselves. This girl would get a better grade in my class than probably half of them (I wish I had something of theirs to show you). Think about that. A seven-year-old has more grammatical sense than most of the nineteen-year-olds in my English 101 class. I was laughing and thought to myself, "Ha, and I thought the public school systems were failing us!"
Then I realized how sickening this shit is.

Yes, it's fake, because she spelled the same word wrong twice, the same way. Quite precocious a second grader would be if she understood the concept of conistency.
If a kid is going to spell favorite with a N and K, why the hell would she spell it differently the next time? Favret vs. Favrit is comparable, favonk is not.
I'm thinking the teacher wrote Favorite on the blackboard with a flat E and the I too close to the R.
What in the world would make somebody fake something like this anyways? What's hard to believe about it?

I've been so over-exposed to the error-ridden communiques of highschoolers and graduates that it didn't even occur to me that I was reading a second-grader letter. I thought it was a high school thesis or something.
