Good day Ubersite! This is my first post (another reason i expect to be recieving dozens of -2's.. Yay).
I should probably start off with explaining the basics. My name is williamson and I am a socialist, and I'm here to tell you merry little folk about the wonderous utopia that i call Socialism.
Ever have a shit day at work. Not because something bad happened but because it was like the day before... and the day before that... and the day before that. Ever felt that no matter what you do to better your productivity at work, nothing's in it for you? Hell, if you work harder it means that the boss with fewer work hours, hotter wife and faster speed boat can make that final payment on that Lexus. What's the point?
Myth: Those who own a lot in life got there because they worked hard.
Fact: Those who own a lot in life got there because they own what YOU, the labourer created.
(Oh, by the way, i spell 'Labour' with a 'u'. I'm not a Brit, I'm an Aussie.)
Want a new TV? A new car? A new home? These things cost money. But why? Obviously there is a price involved in materials and labour to produce such items... But trust me; nothing you buy costs as little as it cost to produce. And those that own the production (hereon referred to as capitalists) make the margin that you pay extra.
Williamson's tips to understanding the markets: Profit = Demand / Supply.
Any budding mathematician will be tripping over his calculator to tell you that in order to to create a greater profit for the capitalist, the demand must rise and the supply should drop. I'm sure you've noticed how they rise demand (The average American sees something like 3000 advertisements a day). But as for the supply drop; that's more subtle.
Myth: Factories are working full out to produce for you the most products possible.
Fact: The average factory runs at 65% capacity (note: This fact comes from a rather left source. Let's raise it to 75% just cause we can't trust those commies.)
Hell, still want that TV, car and home? See the guy next door? He's budding for a new pool. And the guy across the street's aching for a stereo. And that guy down the road, he's looking for a new set of dumbells. He's a pretty buffed up guy. He can bench like... a lot! He'd be a pretty good house-builder. And would be a great labourer for making cars. A degree in electrical engineering, so skilled at making TVs. But, what's this? He's unemployed!
SHIT!
There is work to be done. Homes, cars, TVs to make. Someone needs to get this guy a job. Someone who owns a factory to make the cars, the TVs and the houses (Houses ARE made in factories damnit!). But no matter where he goes to work, he can not find a job. WHY? Because of one reason, the cornerstone of my belief in socialism..
The factory owners are not trying to optimise production. They don't care if there are enough homes being built for the poor. They don't care if enough beds are made for the needy. They optimise profit and leave production at a rate of 75% (on average).
The capitalists keep society on the brink of starvation, keeping them unfed, malnourished, while all the while holding the power to create a better land away from the people, because god-forbid, without that profit margin they couldn't pay off that Lexus.
There will be a few people who take a shot at me for this article. Some will defend the right of the capitalists by saying they are 'free to capitalise'. Western democracy began with the greeks, some 3000 odd years ago. Plato once said "Absolute Freedom is Absolute Slavery". By defending the capitalists rights, you are defending his rights to take yours away. Like it or not, you are a slave of necessity. You need the banks, the factories, the multi-million transnationals in your day to day living to survive. And by working together under the common interest of making the biggest profit and by keeping production to a minimum, they can keep you, the consumer, starved and hungry.
A thought to ponder: Cuba has a higher literacy rate than the United States of America.
Now, for the grande finale, let's do some cam-whoring!

(these managers would be the smart citizens, and would be paid at a higher salary accordingly, so there goes the "Why should people bother under socialism?" query.)
=======================================
Excellent contradiction there, you're still allowing the managers, deemed to be "smarter" to capitalize on everyone else's work.
Massive social inequality there.
-----------------------------------------------------
I'm not calling socialism perfect, but by fucking god, a few managers with a slightly higher salary than the rest is a lot better than the current system of homeless bums and multi-billionaires.
This way, human nature can still be compensated and a strive to excel is nurtured through higher salary.
I never hope to achieve utopia. But I can see this system is much better.
PS. Expect another commy pinko post soon uber.

Socialism relies on people rejecting any kind of personal responsibility, and at the same time, submitting to the control of a huge, repressive government. In order to enact any type of socialist scheme, one must repress all those who want to who have any type of drive or ambition. Socialists are unable to grasp that people are different, with different talents, drives and work ethics. Anyway, things were always better for the poor in the United States than they ever were for those living under the Iron Curtain.
In short, Socialists have no idea how the real world works.

If there is no extra profit, a surgeon would make as much as a gardener? I'd rather work 3 hours a day handing books to youngsters in the library than do backbreaking, mindnumbing, unhealthy work for 8 hours a day.

Yeah, this was okay. As someone mentioned before, you did a lot of finger-pointing about what was bad about capitalism, but you didn't then move on to offer the socialist alternative.
Then there's the fact that altruism doesn't jive with human nature, and socialism depends on a spirit of altruism, but you're still young, you probably haven't figured that out yet. Been suckling at the teat of people who just magically want to give you things for no reason (your parents) for too long. Give it time, lad, someday you too will learn the value of property ownership.

ICO, in response to your question, socialism makes your question obsolete. You ask how the producer lives without a profit? Simple. There is no longer a producer. Sure, there are still managers, who look after the production process (these managers would be the smart citizens, and would be paid at a higher salary accordingly, so there goes the "Why should people bother under socialism?" query.)
There are no producers. No companies. All is owned by the people, and the government is managing it all. And unlike Stalinist Russia, socialism doesn't neccesarily mean a dictatorship. Democratic socialism is what I hope for. For the people, by the people.
Note: I have a feeling this review will be picked apart when i said Stalinist "socialism". Many will say it was communism, and others will agree it was socialism. I have met many who call themselves socialists and many who call themselves communists. It's my opinion that it's essentially the same thing. The two beliefs interwieve to the point where it's just easier to think "Commies are really left, Socialists not so much". Trying to categorise government under umbrellas is a pointless task. Let's just accept that Stalin was sort of socialist, sort of communist and quite a prick.

Good first post. Solid and well written.
You forgot to take into account the cost of research for any new goods that are on the market. Manufacturing and labor are a small part of the cost of something. Its the 4 guys in a lab coming up with Plasma TV technology that cost a lot more.
Socialism doesn't work as it offers no reward for performing above the average worker.
Capitilism rewards the greedy and ambitious (And sometimes the lucky).
Neither system is perfect, but I would rather have the chance to be rewarded based on my performance, rather than be treated the same as someone less skilled or less motivated.

Socialism sounds like a cheap cop out from capitalism to me. "Oh, all the rich people have everything, they just fuck me and I don't get anything!" Boo hoo, just because you're mediocre doesn't mean the system is wrong.
But this looks like it took some effort, and you seem to at least not be a retard. So +2.

Nice advertising attempt, but you really didn't go into a lot of the base principles of socialism, just a lot of finger pointing.
Socialism doesn't work on a large scale basis, too many influences on the economic stability of the group. Inequality will naturally appear, a cold spell kills a crop, and suddenly a section of society no longer has access to what they need.
10,000 years of evolution and greed and envy will still destroy your happy little idea.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Godchicken is right...political systems and their survival have to be looked at in terms of human evolution. What tickles me though is that one of the most capitalist dog-eat-dog societies around, believing in the business ideal of survival of the fittest, is also probably the most Creationist Christian. How can that be reconciled I wonder. Answer? the christianity is merely a tool to motivate the masses and they have lapped it up like every other societal belief.
I wish George Orwell were around today....although in saying that he would most likely be assassinated.
