Actually, the Muslims DID try it, twice! They took all of Spain in the year 711, and lost to Charles Martel at the Battle of Tours (France) in 732. The second time they marched up through the Balkans (that's why Yugoslavia is full of Muslims), but they were defeated at the Battle of Vienna in 1683.
