Alright, I want to find out what the best classic rock band ever is. I consider a classic rock band to be any rock band that plays classic rock style (that means no metal bands of any sort, including hair metal and glam rock. Don't worry, I have a separate poll for that). Please reply with your top eight classic rock bands, numbered 1-8. Your number one will get eight points, your number two will get seven points, so on and so forth. The top 32 bands will move on (providing people name that many, but I'm sure you will) to the official round 1. Here's my vote...

1) Led Zeppelin
2) The Beatles
3) Rush
4) The Rolling Stones
5) Cream
6) Jimi Hendrix Experience
7) The Kinks
8) Thin Lizzy

I cannot rank bands.

Here are 8 in no particular order

Eagles
CCR
Bob Dylan
The Doors
Boston
Hendrix
Van Halen
the mr Pink F
Bob Marley (not so much classical, but a classic)

(I think most of the Beatles earlier work was more pop and less classical, the same can be said for CCR, but CCR didn't make a dime, so they need props.)

And the best of them all.

Plus two for this not turning into a bickerfest about WHAT REAL ROCK IS, MAN.

Honestly, I am not enough of a fan of these bands to credit myself with an informed opinion, so I'm staying out of it. I like music by all of these folks and groups, but I just haven't listened up extensively enough to compare them all in any meaningful way.

I just wanted to pop in and give everyone a thumbs up for not going all music snob on this post.

Leaving out Floyd, Hendrix, The Beatles and Led Zepillen since they'll

Zappa comments.) And yes, JA, Cream, Aerosmith, The Doors. KISS, maybe
but probably not. Old Judas Priest.

Classic rock style is basically the big style in the sixties and seventies (particularly the sixties). True classics, like Elvis and others from the fifties, I'll allow. I don't want to go into the technicalities, cause it's too tough to describe, but it's easier to just say what it's not...

1) not metal (once again, save Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath for the "best metal band poll"
2) very, very, very little from the eighties (i.e. no new wave, but I think I would include Halen).

1 - Led Zeppelin (8 points) Without a Doubt
2 - Hendrix (7 points) Ranks right up there with Page and Clapton
3 - Cream (6 points) The most underrated band ever. I recommend picking up their box set.
4 - The Beatles (5 points) I like them for their later stuff & I hate them for their early stuff.
5 - Rush (4 points) Their pre-Moving Pictures stuff is amazing. Anything after 1981 is crap.
6 - The Rolling Stones (3 points) I never really liked them for some reason.
7 - The Kinks (2 points) They're ok, but not in the same category as those above on the list.
8 - Thin Lizzy (1 point) They always reminded me of something that a greasemonkey would listen to while putting used headers on his '79 Camaro.

---------------

You didn't have to use his bands. You could've picked others. That being said, Cream isn't that underrated. I bought their boxed set, and to be honest, I'm disappointed. Jack Bruce's voice doesn't work well with pure blues songs. It's fantastic for things like "White Room" and "Sunshine Of Your Love", but does not translate to a classic blues piece like "Born Under A Bad Sign". All of the members of the band are among the best at what they do, but there is a reason that they ended up breaking apart.

And you say Hendrix is "right up there with Page and Clapton"? He was so far BEYOND Page and Clapton it's not even funny.

4) The Beatles - I meant to put The Beatles at #3, but whatever. Leave it like this.
5) Chuck Berry (assuming he counts) - Every rock band is forever in debt to him.
6) Pink Floyd - One of the few bands to properly use synthesizers. (The other would be The Who.)
7) Bob Dylan - Only folk musician I have ever liked.
8) Funkadelic (assuming they count) - Ridiculously underrated musicians. Mediocre songwriters.

If Chuck Berry and Funkadelic don't count, then put Santana and The Animals in my last two spaces. Zeppelin would be my #5, but they will get way too many #1 votes, and they definitely don't deserve it. They stole so many songs, and Page's guitar is often sloppy and unmusical.

Some people are only including the bands that you had in your own personal list. They didn't understand that you can pick other unlisted bands.

"5. Frank Zappa (may not be considered classic rock?)"

you are on the right track.... NOT!

Zappa is a fucking genius.

It is quite absurd that you would include Zappa in classic rock.

Your children's children will mention the name Zappa when they speak of artists like Beethoven.

I was cruisin' in a car
Down Melrose Boulevard
When I stopped all the traffic
I was laughin' so hard
Standin' on the corner
Was this rock n roll dude
In leather pants thinkin' he was cool
He had the jacket
He had the shades
Farrah Fawcett hair
Or was that a wig
Face like a turtle
Trying in cain to look stoned
You could tell he'd been practicing
At home in the mirror
He'd probably been posing like that all day
Didn't matter that is was a hundred degrees
In the shade

Well c'mawn, well c'mawn
Seventies rock must die
Well c'mawn, well c'mawn
Seventies rock must die

Bogus bands, plastic rock stars
Stupid clothes and the worst made cards
Country rock making us all sick
While John Travolta wags gus double-knit prick

Being a teen back than
Man, it was a drag
Bicentennial and no one burned the flag
You think we live in pretty desperate times
When people wanna go back to nineteen seventy five
My Saturday Night Fever fantasy
Lock the Bee Gees in a Pinto
And ram it from the rear
Burn, baby

Well c'mawn, well c'mawn
Seventies rock must die
Well c'mawn, well c'mawn
Seventies rock must die

Suck my ego, pay to play
Got nothing more to say
As we sell you a stairway to boredom

Look around at the hip people
Set in their ways
Reaching back to the things they used to say they hate
Young old brats playing fossil rock
Pistols reunions pass for rebellion

Radio and TV gettin' to damn bland
With collegiate boy Neil Young copy bands
Underground's becoming an alternative joke
Even Aerosmith hates all the Aerosmith clones
I know they don't make 'em like the Son of Sam
But even punks wanna go back to seventy seven

Well c'mawn, well c'mawn
Seventies rock must die
Well c'mawn, well c'mawn
Seventies rock must die

You totally neglected:
-Black Sabbath
-The Allman Brothers
-Alice Cooper
-The Grateful Dead
-Frank Zappa
-CCR
-Three Dog Night
-Lynrd Skynrd
-CSN
-Neil Young
-The Doors
-AcDc
-Kiss
-Van Halen
-Steve Miller

What's everyone so worked up about? So there's a comet. Big deal.
It'll burn up in out atmosphere, and whatever's left will be no bigger
