Ok, I've seen a handful of comments about folks having trouble posting some things. Just to keep everyone "up to speed", the only rules on posts and comments are:

1. Posts cannot have subjects in all caps - brought about by the "I HATE CALIFORNIA" and "NIGGERS" posts... mainly, this screws up the layout of the top-ten lists since caps are so much wider than lower case letters
2. Comments from non-registered users cannot have the name, email, or comment in all caps - courtesy of a bunch of random schleps... this just pisses me off
3. Comments cannot contain words with more than 100 characters in a row - thanks to yidele on this one. This was added a couple days ago and was initially 40, then 70, then just a minute ago I bumped it to 100. The problem is that in HTML, words don't wrap in the middle, so a single word of 2000 characters causes the page to scroll horizontally for a mile and a half.

If there's ever a problem posting something, you can always just hit the browser back button, change it, and resubmit it. If the error messages seem vague, that's intentional. For example, if the error message was in big red letters and said "you cannot submit an article with the title in all capital letters", any idiot could go change one letter in the subject and get it to go through.

That's it for filters. There's no filter on naughty words (such as fuck cunt dick asshole shit, etc.), IP address, date, age, sex, religion, sexual preference, height, weight, musical taste, or anything else. The intention of the filter is to "raise the bar" so to speak. Instead of lying on the floor covered in dust and shit, the bar is now six inches off the floor - close enough to get dirty and stink of shit, but high enough to have a chace to get some fresh air.

However, the good thing is that you can now use this post, yes THIS POST, to leave comments about why you hate Ubersite, and if you're feeling generous, things you think would make it better. Just be polite.

One thing I'd like to see is a search function for "user", not just for post names. Trying to look up an author that's not on the MVA can be somewhat hard.

you banned me. twice.

i still haven't recieved my confirmation email for this one, and it's been over a day. it hasn't been filtered anywhere, and it's not in my spam box, trash, etc. Where is it? Please help me.

and i decided, bart, that it's too much work pissing you off. getting banned just confused me, and i had no clue what was going on. then i had to make a new username (i liked the first one) and then eventually, i got banned again and i think my IP was banned because i got "forbidden, blah blah blah" and it worked on another computer, here at work. then i had to create ANOTHER username, and i'm avoiding pissing you off... even though this is a really long review.

Originally, I was not a huge fan of the colour scheme... I put that down to Bart not being an interior designer.

Then, as my boss walked in and looked over my shoulder one day, I realised the benefit of making this look a lot like a search engine.

Very clever.

However, if this is actually a colour scheme by choice (after your favourite footy team or something) then I take it all back.

The rest of Uber is great... its just the Uberusers that bug me, but I realise that without them there would just be me posting +2 posts forever and talking to myself.

Hm.

In a perfect world, nothing would have to be changed about Ubersite. People with a modicum of intetlligence would come, read, post, reply, and basically just Uber with no problems like multiple -2's or shit posts created only to reach Most Heated.

What the fuck am I talking about a perfect world for?

In reality, I'd like to see the italics for emphasis, but no more. Loren is right about the bolding, and I just generally like the idea of Uber being simple text-based. Italics would be nice though.

The idea on reply's going from top to bottom would be cool, but not all that important I don't think.

Overall, I love this place, and wish that I would have found it sooner so that I could have been a part of Uber before it was overrun by shittery. The fact that it has been makes it harder for people like me, who honestly enjoy the reading, writing, and social aspects of Uber to make a niche for themselves because the shit-eaters make doubt of new comers not only overwhelming but neccessary.

Thanks for this opportunity to voice opinions Bart.

Bart - due to the experiment of
http://www.ubersite.com/cgi-bin/message_get.cgi?message=1050076419690224775 and it's consequence http://www.ubersite.com/cgi-bin/message_get.cgi?message=1050093607723218623 the following has been demonstrated:

That anyone can be No 1 on the 'Most Often Reviewed List' so long as someone keeps going back to give themselves another rating and review even if it's just -2 and 'no comment'.

The Ubersite About Us quote:
"By users giving high ratings to the jokes that make them laugh and low ratings to the jokes that suck, the end result you see will be the funniest jokes currently known to mankind. This theory also applies to every other category appearing on Ubersite."

But the system doesn't work if people aren't using the rating system like that, i.e. giving reviews a 'random' rating. Or if they are rating a post multiple times just to achieve an aim i.e. of 'being most reviewed'.

My suggestions on how to improve things:

* People can only rate ONCE, they can review as many times as they like if they think of other things to say but they can only rate a post once. This way the results aren't distorted by ONE person rating more times than anyone else. i.e. I'm logged in as PAS and I rank a post -1 and write a comment. I come back to that post to do another review but this time the 'rank this item' dropdown option box does not appear so I don't have the ability to rate it again, I can only leave a comment.

* Alternatively people can rate as many times as they like but the super Uber computer will calculate the average of their personal rating based on username.

At the moment Uber calculates the average of *every* rating no matter if the same person has rated a post on more than one occasion. i.e. twenty people rank me -2 once each. I rank me +2 twenty times, average is =20*-2/20+20*2/20= ZERO. With this new method twenty people rank me -2 each, I rank me +2 twenty times, Uber only counts the average of my ranking once ie =(-2*20/20)+2/21, now the average = -1.904761905

* There should be some way to stop or at least discourage someone from having more than one username. Because if you managed to get the average rating per user working that wouldn't stop me from signing up with any other name I wanted and coming back with different ratings. Or coming back as Random Joe or changing that name to any variant I wanted without signing in.

* OR you could make it so that if you are *not* logged in your rating and your review does not count towards the average. So anything Random Joe says doesn't count :o)

* Regarding 'Most Often Reviewed' perhaps only one review per individual user should count towards the score, so I cannot review my own post 500 times and be No 1 on this list, if I have reviewed my own post 500 times so far as Uber is concerned PAS has only reviewed it once.

* OR that a user's review of their own post does not count towards the total number of reviews.

By the way my 'Rate this +2' post was not meant to be a mockery of how the Ubersystem works, I was feeling ill, bored and playful, here is my explanation.
http://www.ubersite.com/cgi-bin/message_get.cgi?message=1050076016619524211

Sorry to have caused you any hassle Bart and I totally believe my Rate this +2 post does not deserve to be on the Most Often Reviewed List so feel free to take it off if you want or whatever.

Cheers
PAS

p.s I will post this comment in a couple of other relevant places.

Doesn't anyone think that a "bold" option would tempt people to write responses in all bold letters?
I can dig italics, they're safe enough, underlining would be cool, but I do think bolding will be visually confusing as it would fight against our user-names. (Can you tell I'm in the graphics field?)
Bart, Uber is great, I'm in shock still that I found somewhere to go where I actually relate with and respect people. I learn something new every day here. It's a life saver for me when I'm in between projects, I swear. I would be tearing my hair out otherwise.
And that's my testimony. Hmpf.

All this technical mumbo jumbo is making brain twitch. I only recently realized I missed my true calling in life. I need to go back to school so I can make less money doing something I like. Ubersite is awesome.

My requests/and/or/suggestions.

Please, no emoticons. They are an eyesore.

If we must have them, allow us to upload our own, such as //kiss my ass, //the finger, //the browneye, and the ever popular //slack-jawed yokel.

Yes, italics and font options would be nice. I like italics to interject a little more meaning, and they help to clarify context to those who are able to decipher it from the eclectic writings herein.

Bart what I would find *really* handy would be (in order of importance to me):

1) When I reply to a post to see either the original post or the entire thread underneath the box I'm typing in. I always need 2 Uberwindows open (otherwise I forget what people said!), the one I'm typing the reply in and one with the thread I'm responding to which is a bit irksome.

2) I'd like to be able to make words bold, italic and underlined. Strikethrough would be top.

3) Emoticons :¬) Even a couple?

4) Uberparties involving beer, sarcastic bods, nancy sailor boys with smelly mops, women with furry mutts*, Top Gun pilots, Jewish transvestites, boys with pussy names, spotty teens, Texan beefcakes, Aussie tight-buttholes and Native American descendants giving it the 'best a man can get' smackdowns.

Pity there's no-one like that here. Oh well, guess I'd better go someplace else for my fill of freaks like me. :p

About the 100 characters in a row. I don't know what number it was at Thursday, but I tried to post a link and it wouldn't let me. I was actually trying to post a link to another ubersite post. For example, the link to this post is 75 characters and there are links that are alot longer than this. You can't put spaces in a link. I understand what you mean about the text wrapping, but I just think this filter could cause problems.

Just for the record, I agree with you about the attachment thing. I think that it would get out of hand.

Some nude celebrity pics would be a nice addition.

Sorry about that arrogant comment... could have just been a misinterpretation on my part.

The bandwidth concern isn't client side bandwidth. I have a cable modem at home and T1 at work. The bandwidth concern is on the server end. Let's say that the images are ~250k each. If images are allowed in reviews, there could be let's say 10 images on a single page. That leads to 2.5MB of images per page view. Multiply that by the number of times a single message is viewed and then multiply that by the total number of messages.

This number gets really big really quick.
250kB/image * 10images/pageview * 1000pageviews/article = 2.5 GB of data transfer total per article

Some of these estimates may be a bit high, but also keep in mind that I have to be prepared to handle the worst case scenario. For example, 250kB/image may be high, but 1000 pageviews may be low (You're A Racist Dr. Seuss is at 26,000). In order to keep the server stable and accessible, I have to make sure that it never gets into the worst case scenario, because in this particular case, the worst case is pretty bad.

Hope that clears it up a bit.

that's that, then. I didn't realize that bandwidth was a problem for you - most folks I know use dsl/cable access so that loading 200-300 k pix isn't an issue provided the site has a fat pipe. I don't know why you think me incredibly arrogant or indeed concerned with impressing anyone - that was neither my tone nor intention in the post at hand.

yidele, the reason why there are not attachments on reviews is not because I don't know how to do it. I understand you think you may be impressing someone with your knowledge of subqueries and database handles, but your arrogance on this matter is astounding.

The reason why you can't attach things to reviews is very simple:
1. bandwidth - mine and yours
2. people like you would use it to post even more antique porn
3. I would need to prevent people from uploading giant files... as in MB, or as in WxH
4. backups would be that much slower

Yes, it would be cool to share a bunch of images, but that's not something you do here. You can post links to images and serve them up over your own bandwidth, or yahoo's bandwidth, or whatever. The page loads for large pages are slow enough as is... they certainly wouldn't be helped by a bunch of images coming down.

So no, image attachments on comments are intentionally out. I was somewhat sceptical about even having attachments on top level messages, but decided to go with it. Look at the result... a bunch of porn and a copyright infringing picture of Nick Nolte. It's cool that Razor put his picture up, and I liked the pictures of the fireworks, but a couple of useful pictures out of the twenty that have been put up is a pretty low percentage. That would only be lowered if attachments were allowed on reviews.

there's no reason why you couldn't include an attachment in your reply. this has nothing to do with limitations in mysql.

I guess this is the time & place to mention the post attachments as replies thingy. Far be it from me to teach anyone mysql or perl, but there is really no reason other than time/expense not to have afeature like that. While Mysql doesn't support subqueries, you can always do a select into to be queried on the second pass, or a perl struct that will let you address the output stream from an earlier select just as you would a table ( could be in a pm ) or just Stuff it into a hash & treat it as a table. I guess what I'm trying to say here is that Ubersite is a fine medium that could use a bit of refinement. Hookers with apple pie a la mode would be nice as well.

I think a good idea to make ubersite better would be to completely revamp the site and make it devoted to Dragonball Z. DragonBall Z fanart, Dragonball Z cartoon ideas, Dragonball Z anime porn, and other miscellaneous Dragonball Z potpurri.
