I think really screws us (in the U.S.)is religion.

Many simple people believe that they would be committing and act of evil (sin) should they vote for a democrat. Somehow the republicans have claimed the moral high ground in the minds of many.

Its actually sort of scary that for these people the main issues to be concerned about are;

that no one ever have an abortion and that all abortions are murder and should be treated as such,
that the burning of the US flag be punishable with jail time,
that there be no restrictions on gun ownership.

Also, I think that they have forgotten that the US is built on the promise that we be free FROM religion in addition to freedom OF religion. If there is a place for religion in government it is in the people who make up the government rather than in the fabric of the institutions.

To consider a man's relationship with his god as a factor in who you vote for is certainly a voter's right...but it sets you up to be manipulated. As of yet, the heavenly records that would prove the presidents assertion that he often and sincerely prays...have not been released.

Once the transcripts of these prayers have been released and tests have been done that prove that the president actually believes that he is talking to god and that god is hearing him, then and only then can you be sure that you are voting for a believer. Until these conditions have been met....I have a bridge in Brooklyn that you might be interested in. Trust me...I own it...and you can too. All you have to do is say it is so and people will believe you. Go ahead and ask god about it, he'll back me up on this.

Ok, I actually agree with the fact that religion is genuinely screwed. So is god. That's why I'm an atheist.

I'm -2ing this post for the simple fact that you couldn't possibly have read my post (sheep feed: http://www.ubersite.com/m/50647 ) clearly considering the questions you raised.

I do agree that liberalism can be just like a religion. Any set of beliefs that, through its tenets, blocks its adherents from freely considering other options is a prison of thought.

Man, you guys are tough.

I realize that when I shortened the first sentence I inadvertantly left out the word "what". I just now spell checked it after seeing the criticism of my grammar and spelling and all Word can come up with is that I didnt insert some possessive punctuation as in presidents' etc. As far as grammar goes I dont really follow MS Words recomendations to the tee. Call it professional license.

I read it aloud to myself to see how it flows and it seems o.k. to me.

I tend to write in an off the cuff manner and then return for an edit if needed. In a forum such as this wherein I am merely expressing an opinion I didnt think it was that important.

End of defensiveness. You had me doubting myself though.

It was a sincere post.
Im glad there was some back and forth generated.

I'm not convinced that this was an attempt at satire. If it was, it was botched, because behind the poor spelling and bad grammar, there are some solid points.

America is a constitutional democracy. Some people assume that means "majority rules", but it really doesn't. The difference between "mob rule" and "majority rule" is really a matter of syntax. What it means is that the people (who are taxed) have a voice and say in the government (which they exercize by electing public officials), but that every law said officials create is subject to the constitution - which was created to prevent the majority from limiting the rights and privildges of the minority without a hell of a good cause. Saying "Our religion is in the majority, so we should get to be the morality police of the world!" is the retarted precept of a theocracy, and inherently dangerous.

Maybe you are smarter that me because I have no idea what not going to Church has to do with being a "true Christian."

Religion has a long history of destroying countries and people, so why should the fate of Americans be any different than the societies that fell before it?

There are no wise men in the world and there never have been. You can see God's face on your money, and in him we solely trust and always have.

America follows the governmental cross to it's peril.

Actually...no it doesn't because I don't attend church.

I will work on my grammar.

Fiscaly, I am a republican and voted for Bush last time but only because I thought Gore would be innefective as a commander.

I meant what I said about the simple people though. My own people can be called simple. Factory workers and ex-miners in the south east, their church is the largest thing in their life. They are insulated from any concerns that extend beyond their county and they will believe that their president is "the chosen one" come hell or high water.

I walked away from that life and that religion when I was 17. I cant say I am a better man for it but I know that I am happier.

The saying that "an unexamined life is not worth living" might apply here. I dont believe that my grandmother has ever had a thought about how our governments actions might effect the world as a whole. For her it is all about honor and appearances. To vote out Bush would be a statement that we did wong and to admit the mistake is to accept responsibility for it. I think that there are many people who, like her, are on a bandwagon for no other reason but it is the same wagon they ride every year.

If I sounded (or perhaps am) arrogant, I regret it. I still love my grandmother even though she probably canceled out my vote.

Religion isn't the problem, it's the people who bastardize and exploit it.

Great way to start out. You are going to make lots of friends with the people you are talking about by calling them "simple."

Exellent point, you complex, complex man, you.

You are clearly a wolf-in-sheep's-clothing Democrat. If you are going to polemicize on politics, use accurate grammer. Otherwise you make the yourself and your party look foolish, but I think that's the intention here. -2
