I returned home after killing Gofer feeling empty and used up. I grabbed a beer from the fridge and sat on the couch to contemplate all that I'd been through and what was to come. My thoughts turn back to Gina, the one woman I truly loved and the loss of her washed over me in great waves of pain. I cried that night like so many others and again found my resolve for vengeance strengthened by my grief.
There's a knock at the door, I don't have many friends anymore so I have no idea who could be visiting especially so late at night. I get up from the couch and go to the door. I look through the peephole expecting to see cops, thinking they'd finally put enough together to come get me but instead I see Jeff standing in the hall. "Just a minute" I call through the door as I go to get my gun. Jeff and I are not exactly friends so I'm sure this isn't a social visit.
I open the door: "What do you want Jeff?"
"Can I come in?"
I step aside to allow him to step in, tensely waiting to see if he's figured out what's happening to his co-workers and has come to put paid. "Ben, the network has a proposal for you. I know you're not happy about the way the show went but I think you should seriously consider their offer. They're recruiting for the next season and they've asked me to produce the show so they're looking for a new host. They want you to be that host."
"Why the hell would I want to host the very show that took so much from me? You used us, you killed so many, and now you want me to be party to it?"
"Look, I know how you feel about your time on that island but this time will be different. People know exactly what they're signing up for and amazingly we're getting an even stronger response from people who want to be on the show. You, as the winner of last season are perfect to be the host of this season."
"I can't believe people are signing up to go die for the off chance of a million dollars and a little bit of fame. I won't be party to the slaughter of more innocent people even if they have fully understood and accepted the risks involved with being on the show."
"Ben, I know what you're doing, the network knows what you're doing. The Police on the other hand don't feel that there is close to enough evidence to even get close to you right now. No matter how much we scream and yell at them they just tell us they're watching and that if a strong enough link presents itself to tie you to the deaths that they will pursue your arrest. Where does it end Ben? Are you going to kill all of us? I think you seriously need to consider this; you can use your intelligence and drive for something so much more positive than getting revenge against people who were just doing their jobs. The network wants to offer you a very generous compensation package and give you the opportunity to further your new career in TV. I.."
"Get out Jeff. Leave now before I do something rash. I'm sure I'll be seeing you soon."
Jeff turned to leave, "Ben, think about it. You're going to mess up and be caught. Stop this foolishness now and come work for us. We can mend our fences and work together. This is a great...."
I couldn't listen to anymore I shoved him out the door, pushing him hard enough that he stumbled and fell. I slammed the door in his face and as I stood there stewing in my rage I heard him through the door. "Think about this Ben, we'll be in touch."
I wanted so badly to walk out and put hot lead in his face. I barely controlled my rage before doing so knowing that if I did the cops would surely be all over me and I wouldn't be able to finish what I'd started. Damn! I was so mad! The gall of these people! Do they think they can buy their lives as easily as they sold ours? I will finish what I started and all of them will rue the day they decided on a career in reality TV.

Thirty
Three more hours on top of this stupid pole stuck in the ground on the edge of a cliff. I think I'm starting to go crazy. It's just been too much, I didn't know Todd real well but in the short time I did know him I found him to be an honest, hard working, and caring person. For these bastards to casually allow him to die as he did is just too much.
I can hear Gina crying to the right of me. I look over and she's barely keeping hold of her perch. "Gina, look at me. GINA! Come on, look at me. You've got to calm down, come on baby, it's going to be alright, we only have a little more time left up here then we can curl up in each others arms and cry all we want. But right now you've got to focus and stay still."
The others started trying to help but Gina was now sobbing, her shoulders shaking in big giant lurches. And every time she shook her whole body shook. I was worried she would fall too. She finally began to calm down but she was still hitching when she turned to Jeff: "Why? Why are you doing this to us? How can you do this? YOU CAN'T DO THIS!" this last she screamed at the top of her lungs and as she screamed she lifted her foot as though she was going to stomp it. Maybe that's exactly what she was doing, an old habit not quite discarded from childhood tantrums. Whatever the case may be when she started to stomp her foot missed the pole. Her leg kept going until she was almost hunkered over the one foot still on her perch but when she could bend no further her weight shifted forward until she was waving her arms wildly trying to regain her balance. I saw she was going to fall and immediately, without thought, turned on my perch, dropped to my stomach and slid down. I hit the ground just before Gina did and as I turned I saw her strike the rocky earth beneath her and crumple.
"NOOOOOOOO!" I ran to her and gathered her in my arms, and as the life ran out of her she looked up at me and told me she loved me. The first and last times I would ever hear those words from a woman I had truly come to love. She died in my arms; I gently put her down and turned to Jeff beginning to go at him. "You fucker! Asshole! I am going to....."
Jeff calmly lower his gun and said: "Ben, you've forfeited the challenge, The penalty for such is death but given the loss of two of your teammates I will instead call this challenge failed. The rest of you come down. All of you return to camp."
I was defeated, heartbroken, and angry beyond belief and still my instincts to live were stronger than my desire to rip Jeff's face off. I picked Gina up and began to walk back. The others were still working on getting down off the poles but they didn't concern me. I kept walking until I reached the beach, there I sat down, Gina still in my arms and held her, crying. I continued crying, rocking with my love dead in my arms, as the remainder of the group made it to the island and began preparing a place for Gina next to the others we'd lost. When they finished digging they came to me and told me it was time to put her to rest. They knew I'd fallen for her, and even though they might have felt a little jealously over the fact that Gina and I were together they'd also been happy that something positive was still happening on this hell of an island. They gently helped me wrap Gina in her blanket and put her in the grave, and when they were done burying her body carefully guided me back to camp.

I was sort of hoping her death would be one of those improbable fantastic "I didn't die, I was just really sick!" deals and they would kill Jeff together.
But that makes no sense.

I was waiting for Gina's death. It was as sad as I expected it to be. Good job of not making it cheesy or silly or anything.
