To me, the crux of this election resides in the fact that 21% of the voters placed religious values as their number one concern. This outdistanced both economic and terrorism concerns as the primary motivator of candidate selection.
With over 1/5 of the electorate placing the religious ahead of their economic well-being and physical security you have to wonder if the US has become another country weighed down by a suicidal religious martyr mentality. Given the normal differences citizens display regarding secular matters, and how they breakdown politically, it would seem that the religious values voters is a solid 20%+ bloc without whose support it is currently impossible to elect one's candidate to the White House.
With the re-election of George Bush, the GOP has shown that it has firmly established and committed itself to a new coalition of corporate interests and value martyrs. This political merging of the bible-belt with big business allows the Republicans to camouflage themselves as populist providers for the country's working-class folks. They have the numbers well in hand. Combine the 33% or so of the electorate who are the core corporate capitalist boosters with the 20-25% of value martyrs, and the GOP will elect their guy President every time. It will be interesting to see whom George will pass the Cross to in 2008.
So, what happens to the Dems? Sadly, I think they will be the second place political team for the foreseeable future. The GOP's corporate agenda will continue to dominate the land. Favored corporations (major donors) will suck at the federal teat like never before and the wealthy will enjoy further tax breaks... the rest of us will have to wait for the trickle down as the national debt continues to grow.
This electoral grip, held by the Republican Party, will not come undone until their economic policies the value martyrs make possible with their support, causes their own self-immolation. Historically, left un-checked, the rogue capitalists eventually run the nation into an economic chasm. The result of these waves of corporate excess have been our great eras of reform. Given the precariousness of the current debt the Republicans have run up, the health-care crisis, and with the baby boomers on the cusp of retirement, better the crunch happen sooner than later.
It is a shame the "value martyrs" care not that they are instruments of policies that will bring hard times and misery to their fellow citizens and themselves. Like the suicide bombers of the Middle East, they only see the Glory of God

I heard this same bullshit on the news, the democrats can't except that people would rather better themselves as individuals and not feed off the government. Therefore you blame the "religous". You're no better than Peter Jennings.

After today, I'm had it with the politics. Time to accept it and move on - unless they actually find fraud in the Deibold/Sequoia voting machins (which may be likely). Anyways - here's an interesting link: http://attenuation.net/files/iq.htm

To the author: This was a well thought out post, deserving of a +2.
Now my commentary on the comments:
All of you who are making comments about how you are sick of political posts and give -2 with no comments, you need to wake up.
It is because of the people like you, the people who care more about entertainment, about what some stupid celebrity or sports hero is doing rather than the issues that really matter, you are one of the major things wrong with this country.
The younger generations need to get their heads out of the worlds of shit that doesnt really matter in the grand scheme of things and get crackin on the issues that really matter.
Fucking educate yourselves and pay attention to what is going on in the world!

Try to look at this as a test case. Reps think that the economic policies of Reagan and Bush I led to the economic prosperity that occurred during the Clinton years. Dems dispute that.
Give it four or five years, and we'll probably see who is right.
That's for the economic portion of this post. As for the religious portion, the DNC had better wake up if they want to begin to appeal to that 20% of the electorate that they pissed off again.

Its true - somehow they managed to throw Jesus and greedy corporations into the same basket, and have 51% of America fall for it.
