What is better: PostGres or MySQL, as far as open source goes.

Not the place for this.
That said, mysql doesnt (didn't?) support... umm.. whatsit called... nested queries. So if you're doing something sort of advanced, like select yadda from (select yadda from foo where yadda) where yadda.... then stay away from mysql or you'll have to do part of the query in a script or something.
MySQL was easy to install and use, until I wanted to so something complicated and it was a pain in the ass.
