My brother has always been my best friend and was always there for me. He would always cover me in every tough time I went through as a kid. Any time I needed him he was there, no questions asked. Whenever I would be stupid enough to get in a fight he would be there to protect me if I couldn't hold my own and he would always stomp the fuck out of the other guy because he was one tough son of a bitch. He taught me more than anyone ever did and left me with life lessons that I thought were empty and held no value at the time but now that I look back I can see why he did.
He knew someday when I didn't have him there to guide me and to watch over me that I would have to learn to live on my own. As long as I can remember he always thought up ways to toughen me both mentally and physically for life. He would teach me everything I needed to know and how to get out of tough situations.
God, I really wish I had him with me now to show me the way when I am completely lost.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I sit here with my best friend in the world right now. My gun. There are enemy's all around me and I don't even know where I am because of the bombs landing as close 20 yards away that seem to blacken the already dark night even more. I am the last one left as far as I know and I am hiding in a bunker like the coward that I am. I know I should run out "guns a' blazin" and at least die with honor but I can't even find in me the courage to do that.
If only I were strong like my brother I would know what to do in a situation like this. He was always the courageous one in the hard times and this definitely qualifies as one of them. He is strong like that; in fact he would probably rush out of this discarded bunker, that is my home at the current moment, and kill everyone in sight without even flinching. Who am I kidding, he wouldn't even be in this bunker in the first place he would be on the front lines giving his life for a country he swore to protect and wouldn't even think twice about it. If I could be more like him maybe I could be worth something in this life, or at least in this war I'm fighting.
I lose touch with reality right now and recollect the last lesson my brother ever taught me.
"Some things will bring you down, but if you don't fight and keep on going what do you have to live for?"
My brother was taken from me a week later in a car accident that shattered my world. I will always remember him and live every day like he did. Believing that there is always fight left in you when you are at your weakest
(CRACK,BOOM)
A grenade explosion brings me back to reality and I finally see what I need to do. What I owe to my country and to my brother.
"Here I come bro"

not bad.
i like how you did not specify the country or the ideals you were fighting for, only the concepts of loyalty and determination.
