I didn't move much for the next four days. The remainder of our group continued with the task of living and tried many times to get me to eat, to talk, to move. I was in a fugue that I couldn't shake, understandably I think. I'd lost the first girl I ever loved and now I'm supposed to keep playing their sadistic game? I withdrew from life and lay in bed brooding, crying, and wishing. Wishing I'd met Gina earlier in life, wishing I hadn't applied to be on this stupid show, wishing for the return of those lives so carelessly tossed aside for the sake of entertainment. The only thing that broke my silent withdrawal from life was the need of another member of our group. We were down to six, to lose one more was unfathomable and I would do whatever I could to prevent it.

I woke that morning to chaos; I climbed out of bed for the first time in four days to see what the commotion was. Rachel came to me and told me Denny was in trouble. He'd decided that he'd had enough of fish and fruit and went out to hunt a boar. He'd taken our knife, bound it to a long stick and planned to skewer or spear one of these small pigs. Now he was up a tree with several boars around the base of the tree trying to get hold of him. Boars are normally fairly timid animals but they can be very aggressive when injured or when they feel one of their young is in danger.

I went with the others to try to help Denny whose cries for help had alerted the rest of our group to his plight. Chris had grabbed a couple of the nets we'd used for fishing and some of our rope. I didn't know what the others had planned until we arrived at the tree that Denny was currently roosted in. This tree was near an alcove of rock at the base of the big hill in the middle of the island. Chris and Tim had combined the nets they were carrying to make a stronger one about eight feet long and four feet high. Their plan was to try to push the boar away from the tree, they also thought they might be able to coral the boar in the alcove leaving us with a supply of meat ready for the taking. Randy, Rachel, and I picked up long sticks to poke and prod the boar and to club them if need be to keep them away from Tim and Chris who would be the most vulnerable to the boar's nasty teeth.

I liked their idea but thought that trying to corral them might be an unnecessary risk. They were adamant that it could be done and insisted that pork chops would be worth the extra work, so I went along with their plan. I took up station next to Tim, Randy was next to Chris, and Rachel was in the middle behind the net. We began to walk toward the group of boar with the net held tight between Chris and Tim. Randy and I beat our sticks on the ground making as much noise as possible. We were a few feet from the boar when they broke and ran. One ran directly into the net and got caught up in it nearly yanking the net out of Tim's hands as it struggled to free itself. Several ran to the sides where Randy and I beat our sticks trying to keep them centered as we drove them toward the miniature canyon. Some tried to run through this screen anyway and Randy and I did our best to keep them between us, a few scattered loose and ran madly into the woods but when we made it to the alcove we still had ten of these nasty little creatures in front of us.

We had a new problem now. We'd gotten them into the canyon but how were we going to keep them there? Denny was coming out of the tree and was shouting something but we barely heard it over the din of the pigs in our pen. We tried to secure our net to the rock walls to keep them in but there was nothing to wrap the net around that would hold it in place. Tim and Chris held onto the sides of the net fighting the angry boars that now wanted nothing but to escape. They were throwing themselves against the barrier that kept them inside the little canyon. Randy and I began frantically piling rocks against the walls of the cliff to hold the net up. We piled them up to the top of the net and being pinched between our piles and the cliff wall the net stood firm. The next problem to solve was that several of the boars were gnashing at the net and some had succeeded in making a few holes. Randy and I picked our sticks up again and beat the boars back away from the net to allow Tim and Chris a chance to get at the net and patch it, interweaving sticks and anything else they could find to try to fortify it. Many times a single boar would try to rush Chris and Tim and each time Randy and I would club, poke, and prod it until it stood down, backing up with the rest of it's group. Finally we felt we had them secured. We might not be able to keep them all indefinitely but thought we could hold them long enough for us to be able to eat a few of them. We turned to find Denny crouched over Gina and still yelling at us.

We ran to his side and saw that Gina had a big nasty gash on her leg. One of the boars had caught her with it's tusk as it ran by leaving a gaping cut from the front of her shin all the way to the back of her calf. Denny had taken off his shirt and was trying to wrap it around her leg to stop the bleeding. The flow of her blood had started to slow so the five of us carefully carried her back to camp where we lay her in her bed. Randy went to get water and I began tearing long strips of cloth from Todd's blanket, he won't need it anymore after all. We cleaned her wound and dressed it as well as we could, now all we could do for her was hope and pray that it wouldn't become infected and that it would heal well enough for her to be able to walk on. Denny decided that after all we'd been through that he was going to go back and get one of the boars for us to eat. When he got back to the pen he discovered a new problem with our plan. How do we kill one and remove it without getting in the middle of all those tusks? He came back to camp looking sour and dejected and told us about this newest problem. Nobody else really cared right then though, we were too concerned about Rachel.

Rachel spent the next couple of days in bed, she was feverish for a short time but when that broke she seemed to be pulling through it. We'd gone back and killed one of our pigs. Randy threw a rope over the head of one of them and pulled it right up to the barrier, Chris cut it's throat while I beat the other boars away from the messy work near our gate. Tim stayed with Rachel while we were gone since she couldn't put a whole lot of weight on her cut leg. We returned with the pig and prepared to roast it. After cooking it for several hours we all enjoyed our fill and then gathered round the fire to talk once again about our options, our future, and those we'd lost.

We again came to an impasse, unable to see any way out but to play along. Twelve more days to go, we'd lost ten, and Gina would be hard pressed to be helpful for our next challenge which we expected to come at any time now. We didn't have to wait long, the next morning we had tree mail.

I really had to take off a point for confusing the character names, that's pretty significant error (I'm sure me docking you a point will make you lose sleep). Still good though.

Still enjoying them.

Yeah, the whole Gina-Rachel thing was confusing at first, but that's the kind of typo-stuff that doesn't detract from the story if the reader uses some common sense. Besides, I've done that plenty of times :D

It's good to see Gina's doing so well considering she died a couple episodes ago :P

Looks like you mixed up "Rachel" and "Gina" for a bit, but a minor mistake considering you write one of these nearly everyday. Entertaining series.

I'm writing as I go here so I've never tried to publish it. As far as wether or not you want to read it that's completely up to you. If you decide to then I hope you enjoy it.

If this is so shitty that you can't get it published as a book, what makes you think I want to read it in bits & pieces on Ubersite? Posts like this are fucking annoying. +0 so as not to fuck your rating, but the whole concept deserves a -2.
