I am a feminist. I came to that realization today while I was having a conversation with a beautiful girl who puzzled me by majoring in college in feminist theory. I thought she was not a feminist. She asked why I thought that and I said "because feminism is about stuff like you know getting everyone to be a lesbian and/or promoting abortion" (yes I also tend to be semi serious and make ignorant sweeping generalizations to provoke a response within my daily conversation). In truth life is more fun for me when I imagine everything in caricature and so she did not fit my preconception of feminist classes full of lesbians and men haters who did not shave their legs and would score about an average of 3 on a scale of 1-10 in attractiveness (which has nothing to do with why they all hate men...) She said the basic definition of a feminist is someone who wants social, economic, and political equality. That is when it hit me, I am a feminist.

I wonder if feminists will welcome me with open arms. I wonder if their hugs will feel hairier than the normal embrace of a soft well groomed woman...err stop that...I am ready to be a feminist and I want equality so here are some proposals.

No more maternity leave unless there is also paternity leave. That is equality right? Everyone treated the same way. The talk of the pay disparity highlights a truly awful problem, women make much less than men on average. Equal pay for equal work! Women in law firms who take time off to have a baby should be treated the same as men who take the same amount of time off. If a woman wants to work 40 hours a week instead of 80 so she can have a family, she should make partner every bit as fast as a man at that same firm who works 40 hours a week.

No more mens and womens sports, just sports. It is a farce and a slap in the face to feminists everywhere that we have womens sports! We are giving the same prize money at major tennis and golf events to women as we do to men. That is such a degrading act. If Serena Williams would lose 99 times out of 100 to the 50th ranked mens player on tour, then she should not be making an incredible amount more in prize money for beating inferior competition. How degrading! The fuss over Michelle Wie is silly, because she should of course be allowed to play golf with the men. And all the men who can beat Annika Sorenstam should be making the millions she wins in prizes in competitions that exclude them. I realized this part of feminism when I was young and a girl wanted to play American style football with a large group of boys. I said it was fine but we were playing tackle and we were not going to change to anything else, but she said it was okay and I was glad to have her though some less enlightened youth protested. Later when I got older and my college scholarship in soccer disappeared because we had to create scholarships for womens rowing (a sport they had to recruit to get people to sign up for) because of supposed "equality" mandates I knew that it was wrong. Equality means everyone is a person! No men's and women's sports, just Sports! I feel confident women will continue to dominate on the balance beam, but if the WNBA disappears that will just free up more money for other players who are better, and that is equality.

No more paying for dates by guys. I cannot believe how stupid and unenlightened I have been! Opening the door, pulling out the chair, paying for the check! Now I will do that exactly 1/2 of the time, and the other half I will wait and refuse to open the door until the girl does it, I will stand at the table until my chair is pulled out, and I will order steak and lobster if I am hungry without worrying about the price because I will not be paying for it! I also get to get presents now. Feminism is awesome. I guess I will have to send tons more packages than I have ever in my life because girls I have dated have been a ton better at that, but I have to call on the phone less because the girl will pay for it and call me. I can also expect flowers. Ladies I like gardenia the best I think, it smells really nice. No more "chick flicks" to go see for me, I no longer believe in them. The next time someone says it is their turn to pick the movie I will go and enjoy and if the movie is horribly acted and seems to basically be a cliched retelling of the same girl is in a rut and kind of unattractive (cute but not hot) and suffering some professional setbacks but gets boy in the end, or realizes which boy is the right one to be with, I will critique it without worrying about offending anyone, because it is not a movie made to appeal to a certain crowd I do not belong to, it is just utter crap.

I am really happy I finally realized I am a feminist and I look forward to moving forward with my sisters, although since sister and feminist are gendered I will just refer to them as my fellow forward thinkers, or fft's. FFT's unite!

I don't think Title IX is at all useless... we just don't enforce it. Hell, spending is not even equal in men's sports at the college level. That's why men's teams get cut, because typically men's basketball and football swallow the largest portion of the funds regardless of whether they generate money or not for the institution.

Women sports are largely worthless.

My guys freshman HS basketball team was able to EASILY defeat our varsity girls team. A team that was ranked top 10 in state. It just isn't even a comparison.

No revenue. No talent. Lackluster competition. Title 9 is retarded.

nothing like someone saying I get a -2 for life and giving me a zero. I think Ulf may be as angry at women as emily is at men. Quick Post, what is the first misogynistic text mentioned in english literature?

I think the funniest thing is that people did not understand that the sports argument will always remain until feminists admit that they want modified equality. A genderless world would not have different bathrooms, it would not have different sports, it would not even have different clothing sections (because we all know women who do not need bras and men that do) but that society would be somewhat disturbing. We are different, and our differences are okay. Maybe separate sports are even okay, but I am pissed that my school cut soccer, and it was to comply with Title 9 which is worthless because more men than women play sports and it is not because of societal pressures, it is because people generally only enjoy something they can excel in, and when girls realize they will never be better than most men, I guess it is kind of disheartening.

true. but consider

a - if the man is more TALENTED, ie the woman and man are not-equal then that man deserves it.

b - if the man works on non work time - he will get there faster.

collatary - replace man in the above a and b with woman and woman with man, and you have equality.

work hard, be smart, dont give a shit about anything else.

here there are proven physiological differences between men and women, dumbass.

would you like to run the women against the men?

Marathon(42k)
WR Men 2 hours and about 5 mins
WR Women 2 hours and about 15 to twenty mins

no chance, every single AVERAGE man at the olympics/marathon race will be the better of all the best women.

1609 m race (mile)
WR
men 3:4x - Hicham el Gerrouj
Women so slow im not even going to put it down

100 m
WR
men under 10s
women just under 11s?

that is a whole second of difference!!!!
Never would happen.

no female would ever make the finals. and if she did, she would not make ever better than last or second last.

Dear Emily,

With regards to number 3
"Whether the institution can show that the interests and abilities of the members of that sex have been funny and effectively accommodated by the present program"

I would guess it would easiest to comply to Title 9 just by pointing and laughing at the womens field hockey team, which looks funny indeed in their skirts.

The football team at my school effectively funds our entire athletic program, which in turns gives money to the university. Our soccer program did not gain or lose money, it broke even, quite unlike our womens sports which lose money in every sport but baskeball, which despite being one of the top 3 programs in the history of womens basketball in the U.S. makes an incredible amount less than several mens sports at our school which are not nearly as successful.

I feel sorry for anyone who has to date you, because you are obviously going through PMS about 27 days a month and are ready to take your rage out because of the trials of womanhood on anyone who is foolish enough to seek to display affection to you.

First of all your entire post is just simply ridiculous. However one thing that really bugs me is your comment on women's sports. I highly doubt that there will ever be just "sports", and for now we are stuck with the separation of men's and women's teams. One comment that you made about this subject was in regards to your soccer scholarship.

"Later when I got older and my college scholarship in soccer disappeared because we had to create scholarships for womens rowing (a sport they had to recruit to get people to sign up for) because of supposed "equality" mandates I knew that it was wrong."

Before you go blaming the women's crew team as the downfall of your soccer team, you might want to take a look at Title IX. Schools comply with Title IX by meeting one of the following components:

1.Whether the institution provides opportunities for participation in intercollegiate sports for male and female students in number that are substantially proportionate to their respective enrollments; or

2.Whether the institution can show a history and continuing practice of program expansion that is demonstrably responsive to the developing interests and abilities of the members of the sex underrepresented among intercollegiate athletes; or

3.Whether the institution can show that the interests and abilities of the members of that sex have been funny and effectively accommodated by the present program

In an attempt to meet one of the three requirements, colleges usually try and meet the proportionality component (the first one listed) since that is the least expensive way to comply with Title IX. Meeting the proportionality requirement of Title IX is one of the easiest options for schools that have high revenue teams such as football or basketball, and who do not want to take money away from the larger male teams. Instead of reducing parts of the larger teams, the schools instead choose to meet the proportionality requirement by simply eliminating others teams; primarily "less important" men's teams such as your soccer team. So before you blame women for the loss of your scholarship, perhaps you should look at the oh so powerful football team that most likely takes up most of the money from the athletic department.

As for the rest of your post, why bother commenting on such ridiculous banter. I am guessing you are a middle to upper class white male and would obviously not understand what it is like to be a woman or a feminist. Then again that is a sweeping generalization much like your entire post. Perhaps you should try and educate yourself or do some research before you post ignorant comments such as the ones you have made. I feel sorry for any woman that dates you since you obviously have no respect for women or their rights or the struggles they go through on a daily basis simply because they are women.

Yay SmokeyPost!

I'm about halfway with you on these three things.

I'm with you on the paternity leave AFTER the kid has been born, which I think is what you're saying anyway. When women get time off close to their due date, it's certainly more physiological than touchy-feely-y. But hey, kids need to be taken care of, so I think which parent does it is inconsequential. In fact, I'm also kind of feeling like after carrying the kid around for nine months and then shoving it out...well, you know how it works...I'm not so much gonna want to be the number one primary caretaker every waking moment. I'm all for being the mom, but man, being able to piss off for a while would be nice.

I have to disagree with you on the sports. If individual women can compete in men's leagues, etc, etc, then rock it, girl, go for it. Look towards Manon Rheaume. But there also ARE physiological differences between men and women that often mean that no matter how hard you train, you are unlikely to be able to make the same kind of development that will put you at the upper eschelons of the sport. For instance, in hockey, a woman and a man could do the exact same workouts every day since they were six, but the woman's upper body strength is less likely to be as great. It's just a physical difference that you can't really surpass, and of course there are exceptions, but it makes it legitimate to have places where women can play against other people with those same physiological frameworks.

I will send you a gardenia any day, if only because of the awesomeness of the last paragraph. You should check out Russian Olive plants, too, they're sort of the same idea of smell, but it's a little lighter.

Damn, man. You're not a feminist.

Yes, there should be paternity leave. But while most men don't take it, and societal pressure is for women to look after the children, it's positive discrimination to have more maternity leave.

I don't like the whole prize money/scholarships in sport issue either - but basically, it's because the media wants to sell us some sport, and the government doesn't want to pay for public education services properly.

As it stands, in the vast majority of cases physical reality comes into play (particularly with sport) and it's basically in the same category as having, say, divisional pools for local sports (ie rugby). I wouldn't want to play against the guys in first grade, the women (for the most part) wouldnt be much match for me by comparison. That said, if someone wants to start a coed union, I'm game, but I don't think it's happening!

No more paying for dates by guys. Okay, I get that. But don't expect to do any better than split the bill; the world hasn't changed in your favour, it's just changed.

Anyone who goes around using words like "girl" and "chick" to refer to mature women is brainfucked.

Does it bother you then, that I'm a straight white middle-class man?

Okay, I agree with two out of three. And part of the third.

Sports should be combined. Otherwise, women athletes are held to a lower standard than are the men. I played baseball with guys for 6 years, and I was decent. They wouldn't let me play baseball in high school, so I joined softball, and I was some kind of prodigy. I felt better being decent against real competition.

I pay for more dates than my boyfriend does, simply because I have more money than he does, so it's fair that way.

And I believe that if you work the same, you should earn the same. However, I don't think men should get paternity leave until they carry around an 8 pound weight for nine months, puke every morning for a couple weeks, and then push said 8 pound weight out a hole that's usually only a couple centimeters, if that, in diameter. Yeah, that's right. You take an 8 pound shit, and I'll be okay with giving you a couple months off. After recovering from that, however, men and women should get same pay rates depending on how much they work.

Not bad. Let me know when you take that 8 pound shit.
