I followed Rita around today, not much more interesting than Merle had been. I got to her apartment in time to see her take her little dog out for a walk. She was gone for about forty-five minutes and when she returned she put the dog in, grabbed a bag and left. She went to the gym where she spent the first half hour flirting with some meathead at the front desk before joining her spin class. She came out an hour later with a wet head from showering and wearing a power suit that really suited her quite well. She went to work parking in the spot with her name on it and headed into the office. Lunch rolled around and though I waited to see where she went she never came out. I found out later from Ron's secretary, who I'm still seeing on the side, that she does not ever take a lunch. It's quite a while before she finally leaves the office and when she does she heads straight for home. I watch through the window as she greets her yappy little dog and then lets it out into the yard. Then she walks back to her room, I follow her around the house and watch as she changes into a ratty old sweatshirt. Not for the first time I notice that she's a very attractive woman.
When we met I thought we had hit it off. I thought I might be able to take her out and so I asked. She responded with: "win the game and win you get back we'll go out." As attractive as I thought she was then I wasn't impressed by her assertion that I had to win a date with her by winning the game. Looking back maybe she just didn't want to get involved with someone she expected to die, maybe if she hadn't turned me down I would have ignored her part in this, at least then I'd maybe believe her to be human. Oh well, her loss and it was going to be an expensive one.
I watched her the next day and found her routine to be nearly identical. I was having a hard time seeing anything I could use here. Then I thought about my asking her for a date and her response. I realized that I still had her number and decided to ask her out to dinner. I called her and we made small talk for several agonizingly long minutes before I asked her on a date. She declined and invited me to come to her house for dinner instead. Perfect! She said she'd cook and asked me to bring the wine and after a couple more minutes chatting I hung up knowing exactly how I'd take care of her.
I drove to her house for the third straight day, this time as an expected guest. I was neatly dressed and had bought a very good wine. Rita answered the door wearing a slinky black dress that showed off some of her finest features and invited me in. Her stupid little yappy dog did not shut up for the rest of the night. Rita eventually shut it away in her bedroom but even then I could hear the damn thing's incessant barking. Rita poured us both a glass of wine and then offered a toast: "To survivors". Oh, I wanted to rip her throat out right then, the gall of this woman to toast my win on that hellish island. I don't know maybe she noticed my grimace because she immediately tapped her glass to mine and she dumped the wine down her throat.
We sat down to dinner, she'd cooked lamb with potatoes, carrots, and onion, and t was quite tasty. Before she could finish hers I got up and went around the table putting my hands on her shoulders. "Why'd you turn me down when I asked you out that first time?"
"Ben, I think you know why. I'm a little ashamed but I didn't want to get to know any of you personally before you left for the island."
"That is what I thought and unfortunately for you that answer was the wrong answer in order for you to win tonight's game."
"What are you talking about Ben?"
"I'm sure you've noticed how many of the people associated with the show have died recently. Well, Rita, now it's your turn." At this she tried to stand but I held her in her chair. "You chose to ignore that we were being sent to our slaughter, you knowingly allowed it to happen. Now it's time to pay for your immoral choice."
I placed my hand over her mouth and nose and held her until she passed out. Then I grabbed a pillow from her couch and finished smothering her. She'd scratched my hands some but when I looked at her I couldn't see anything about her that would indicate a struggle on her part. I carefully opened her mouth and shoved a large chunk of lamb into her throat making sure it was lodged in there firmly. Then I carefully erased any evidence of my visit. She was meticulously neat so I had to wash my dishes and put them away. I wanted it to look like she choked while eating alone so it wouldn't do to have extra dishes out. I carefully wiped down the chair, the table, the wine bottle, anything I'd touched in my brief time there to avoid leaving undue fingerprints. I hoped they wouldn't be looking for them but if some smart-ass detective noticed anything funny about her choking and ordered an autopsy I wasn't sure if they'd conclude she choked and close the case or if they'd think something was amiss. If they found something they didn't like I didn't want there to be fingerprints putting me at the scene so I took my time very thoroughly cleaning up after myself. I let the dog out before heading out the door to return to my cabin.
It'll probably be a while before I find out for sure what they decide regarding Rita's death so for now it's onward and upward. I only have a few more names on my list and Jeff is one of them. Though he's still got some time I don't expect it to be very enjoyable for him. I'm picking him up tomorrow and plan to take him to a little cabin I know of.

Ooo, that's a good one. As for the skin under the nails thing, you could write that Ben cleaned that up. The only thing I thought of was maybe an investigator would wonder why she got all dressed up and locked her dog in her bedroom if she was eating by herself.
A good read nonetheless.

That's the first thing I thought. But I also thought he could have been forshadowing.
