It appears that the Miami city commission will be voting on whether or not feeding homeless people should be a crime. Yes, you read that right. They want to make giving food to the hungry illegal.
Now, we always do things a little differently in South Florida, but even to us "born and raised" south Floridians, this seems a little queer (And not "queer" like the homos that frequent such clubs as The Copa, but "queer" in the traditional sense of the word). And this ban looks like it has a good chace of passing too.
Two of the five Commissioners have already come out as being in favor of the ban.
During the holiday seasons, people are known to hand out home-cooked meals from the backs of cars, similar to tailgating, except you don't have any sports games to distract you from your eating. The two commissioners are worried about the cleanliness of the food. It seems that tailgating just isn't held to the same sanitation levels as the rat infested soup kitchens.
According to the article at the bottom of the homeless people in Miami "23 percent, almost one in four, are veterans".
This isn't the first "anti-bum" action to be taken in Miami-dade county. A few years ago they had seat-seperaters put on bus benches so the homeless couldn't sleep on them. Apparently all these damn people are trying to eat and sleep, and we just can't have that, not in our city.

Christ almighty.
This reminds me of living down in South FL. I used to work at Outback Steakhouse down there, and one day I get in to work and read the communication board we have in the back, and it says something like
"Do not feed the bums. They will come back WITH FRIENDS. If you are caught bringing them food, you will be out like them, unemployed and begging."
I was absolutely disgusted. I mean, I get that having homeless people standing around begging food will turn off some customers, but please. Resturaunts like that throw away tons and tons of food every night. I think that after closing, giving people who haven't eaten in who knows how long a few baked potatoes that would be trash anyway should not be grounds for termination. That's just wrong.

Sorry Tiger.... but I did.
I think they would make a great fuel source... they are usually full of alcohol and would burn better than sterno I bet... and once sufficiently roasted, they could provide a food source as well as a heat source for the others.
Just a theory mind you....and yes, I am an idiot.

The fact that the Christian Coalition and every other freaking bible-thumping group isn't in Miami right now screaming there head off is absolute proof that they have nothing to do with Jesus and everything to do with hateful, antiquated social practices.
Jesus didn't roam the world telling people only to fuck their heterosexual spouses. He roamed the world feeding the hungry and healing the sick.

I have a new found respect for this man now.

For being a fellow south floridian.
Do you remember when a bunch of the cities in Broward passed laws saying you need a permit to be a street vendor? All the folks that the "homeless voice" helps out got yanked from street corners and thier only source of income.
Props to the Sentenial and Herald for helping homeless people, even if it is only to sell their papers.

Tell all the homeless people to come to Athens, GA. This city is so homeless-friendly that, some nights, homeless people and gutter-punks outnumber drunk college students by 2 to 1 on the streets of downtown.
